B8 S4 APR Stage 2 blown cat, exploring options

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey everyone! This is my first post on the forums, but I have a 2012 S4 that is APR stage 2 with an AWE track exhaust and some other performance & cosmetic modifications. I recently blew out a catalytic converter out of nowhere and the Audi dealer quoted me at 2,900 for parts and install. I am shopping around because (in my head at least) an OEM cat wouldn't do well with the power setup and I haven't seen any offerings for high flow cats... what do you guys suggest?

The cats aren't in the downpipes, the AWE downpipes won't fix the issue.

Contact Evan Dowel or Crown Motorsports (same) for test pipes or catted test pipes.

How long were you Stage 2 before the cats blew? Dual pulley?

Bought it from my friend who moved, Stage 2 at 49K miles (now at 54), this is the second time a cat has blown using the setup. Only use 93 octane, gets drive hard probably once a month (honestly), driving is all highway for work, no snow etc. so it does get taken care of and regularly maintained. But yeah I will reach out.

I see you're in Austin. I think Brink motorsports has some used test pipes they can sell, in case you want to go that route. They can bear the dealer in work and cost for labor if anything.

I actually talked to them and that is where I will more than likely get the install done. I didn't want test pipes because the AWE track exhaust is already loud with some drone.

I would not put an aftermarket cat where your original ones were. I can't think of an aftermarket cat that would be able to hold up as well as oem. I'd hollow them or testpipe and mount a cat under the car where it will only cost you 100 bucks in labor to replace them down the road

You mentioned you were looking for an aftermarket high-flow cat.

What I was saying is that if you put a high-flow cat in the same place that your original catalytic converter is I would not expect it to even last as long as your oem catalytic converter lasted. There are very few aftermarket cats out there that are made as well as oem and particularly the Audi ones. People have already melted hjs cores and that's about as good as it gets.

So if you plan on putting a replacement in there so that at least you can cut down on the noise and the fuel smell than I'd recommend putting that cat further Downstream where it is subjected to a little bit less heat but more importantly if it should melt again you can replace it very easily because now it's mounted under the car so it only cost around a hundred bucks to take out and weld a new one in its place.

He's basically saying if you go the route of aftermarket high flow Cat's then move them to at least where the downpipes are so future labor is cheap to replace if necessary.

Okay thanks for clarifying. I came from Infiniti where the aftermarket HFC's were substantially better so that's where my thoughts were. That and the fact that this is the second cat the car has had to replace since the Stage 2. Moving it down is a good idea though.

Can you describe your exact set up? I've been stage 2 for a while, just wondering when/where to expect blown cats myself!

Do you have cooling? There's no way it's blowing through cats driving it hard once in a while.

Cooling is not going to have much impact on egts. Timing, boost, and air fuel ratio will.

Same car and same setup and so far knock on wood for me. No failed cats. Been APR stage 2 with pulley for probably 20k+ miles. I did have the flange of the cat completely separate - weld broke clean off clearly a manufacturing issue. Had it re welded and fine now.

I do have AWE cold front kit. No pump though.

Many of these type of threads and most people say to gut or use test pipe but I have never once seen anyone mention passing inspection... what is everyone doing? I have no choice but to get inspected each yr so have to deal with replacing stock for stock when the time comes.

You most likely only need to be in a ready state with no CEL to pass inspection. So it would be o2 spacers if you ran catless. If my cats go though, I'll probably gut them and put high flows a little further down the exhaust.

Just sucks by our EPA emissions(no, I am not crazy on wanting to pollute our environment) ... and only reason CATS where they are on our N. American cars is for quicker warm up / emissions. European code... further downstream
Hey APR / JHM / Crown ... I do see potential market for emission/exhaust options here ... just saying

unless things have changed in the past couple of years, when the tuners write out the 02 and/or cats CEL, it still shows up as lack of readiness on the emissions check of OBD2. Won't pass in CA, Colorado, and a bunch of other states if you do not ace the readiness profiles on every single ECU emissions check. State emissions people figured out the tuners were doing this.

There's the 42dd spacer. They say it works in 80% of cases. It's a $40 bet.
