Up and coming RS5 or C63S coupe?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My kids are somewhat grown and I want a 2 door high performance coupe with useable seating for 4. I've been waiting for the arrival of next gen RS5. Granted I haven't test driven one but the more videos I watch, the less I'm excited about the new RS5. I currently own a S6 with a stage 1 tune and I absolutely love the roar of the engine and performance. My S6 handles nicely for a sedan but I want a little more performance around the corners, if you know what I mean. Though the new 2.9 puts out more torque than the NA V8, I just can't get excited about the new engine. It may have descent 0-60 and 1/4 mile times but I'm pretty sure it's going lack in the passing power compared to a V8. As the saying goes, there's no replacement for displacement, which brings the subject matter at hand.
Though I haven't test driven the C63S coupe (sat in it for a while), I've driven other V8 AMG models and I gotta say, those AMG V8s sound wickedly awesome, not to mention the performance. The one thing that I wish it offered is the AWD (4matic or equivalent) but from what I've read/seen thus far, it handles pretty well for a RWD. I'll probably get stoned for saying this on here but I think the coupe looks pretty nice. It certainly looks nicer than the new S5/RS5 IMHO. I can't get myself to appreciate the new RS5's hood. It looks like a cheap Ford sedan. The C63S coupe isn't perfect either. The butt looks like a VW.
I think the RS5 could have knocked it out of the park had it gone with a V8TT. Yeah yeah, I get the whole MPG/EPA thing but it is a sports car/GT after all. At this point, a test drive of both cars is the only thing standing between me and a C63S coupe. Wada ya'll think?

There's really no clear cut answer. Everyone has different tastes in cars and everyone looks for different things in a car.

It would be hard to get me to choose a 2.9liter over a monster AMG bi-turbo V8 especially comparing the exhaust notes in both cars.

But with that being said. Test driving both cars would answer many many questions. Go with your heart

The replacement for displacement = turbos :-D

I expect the new RS5 to gain quite a bit from tuning.

The c63s looks considerably better than the new rs5/s5, imo. Warm weather, I'd probably go with the c63s if test drives were comparable. Otherwise I'd look for a pre2018 rs5.

    True. I always tune my car. A tuned 4.0 V8TT > tuned 2.9 V6TT.
Audi should have left the RS5 exterior design alone with minor body curvature design changes and stuck a V8TT! I do like the new interior but that's about it. I know I know, woulda coulda shoulda.

M4s are niiiice cars but never been a bimmer fan. Besides, I like the roar of a V8 too much.

I've driven the new C63S AMG coupe and its fast as hell, stock over 500HP. With bolt ons and a tune it'll be ridiculous, imagine that TTV8 with a great exhaust. It also feels sportier than the new B9 5 series coupes from Audi. Hoping the RS5 has something going for it, but still waiting to drive it. The new Porsche 911 GTS is also a solid choice if you want a fun, tuning friendly, sports car!

C63's look nice. A 2018 RS5 is going to turn way more heads, especially if it's black. I've only YouTube videos to go off of, but the RS5 doesn't sound that weak to me. Plus I think Audi interiors (especially the new digital dash) blow everyone else away.

I am not going to weigh in on the pros/cons of one cars versus another but I will add that if you need usable 4 seats the RS5 may not be the answer. I am 6'3" and nobody other than a small child can sit behind me in my S5. If you are also tall, consider the RS5 a 3 seater. I can't comment on the comfort/spacs of back seat in the Merc.

If sound is your thing then the Mercedes, though the RS5 sounds pretty damm nice. 0-100 and over the 1/4 the RS5 wins over both the Merc and the m4. Rolling start though the Merc wins unless your not a newb and leave the car in D mode then it's close.

The interior in the new S5/RS5 wins hands down. Nothing comes to close to audi interiors.

Take em for a test drive, that's rally the only way you will decide.

I much prefer the interior and exterior styling of the RS5 plus I like having AWD so it's the RS5 for me.

No way I'd pick the RS5 over the C63s. That's an easy one I think. Go Merc.

I like the looks of the C63S better than the Audi.

However, Mercs do sort of have a stigma as being chick cars.

lol do people actually care about this sort of thing? I didn't realize women driving a certain make or model of car was a negative.

I don't know if people care, but it is curious how a stigma gets stuck in one's head and it can be a big turnoff. I consider convertibles to be girls cars. I don't have any real reason of this other than women like to pretend they like to let the wind blow through their hair even though they complain about the wind messing up their hair. And I consider little cars to be girls cars....fiats, sunbeams, triumphs, miatas, bmw z4, etc (but for some reason, not 370z's). Again, I don't know if the numbers say they are, but, in my head they are.

Agreed, it was basically impossible to improve upon the previous gen A/S/RS5 exterior, which is why I plan to buy a B8.5 RS5 after I'm done with my S5.

    V8tt would be nice!

As you live in southern California I would get the Mercedes if I were choosing. I just checked on out which was $99,000 CDN plus tax. I expect the RS5 will be similar if not more. Why not wait for the RS5 to appear, test drive them both then make your pick. As I live in southern Ontario and drive 55,000 work kilometres per year I need the AWD as I am an accident investigator. I usually drive my GTI when I get called out from home. Anyway have fun shopping.

Meh, you will still be looking at the Merc in your rear view mirror. Plus, Audi interior >>>>all others. Merc rear end really does look crap.

I'm warming up to C63S coupe's bubbly butt. I can learn to love her. Improved interior and AWD would be perfect in my text book. Can't have it all, I guess. Can't wait to test drive the next gen RS5.

New guy here also in SoCal. Last week test drove the C63S and yes its definitely fast and had a nice sound with Sport Exhaust option. It drove well (just a test drive) but I did hammer it briefly. Ive driven the C450 and not the same car but similar and same interior, nice car but not one Id jump on.
I have not driven the S5 to compare performance or feel. I did sit in the S5 and I liked the less busy cabin and the sport seats more then the Mercs.
The Merc seats are a bit tighter on the lats (Im 6'1 225). On the looks, IMO both cars look great. What I get out of the Reviews is describing the C63S Merc as Muscle and the RS5 as GT. Weighing in on the benefit of having a faster car roll racing vs. from a dig I could care less. For me if it ever makes it to the track
I wont be pushing to either car's limits. The only dig racing I see is from every other kid wanting to race his Mustang at the stop light and I'm out on that.
My name is on "RS5 list" and waiting to see the new RS5 before pulling the trigger between either coupe.
Spending 80K IMO it will be worth waiting to drive both.

I just sold my Stage 2 2014 S4 and bought a brand new C63s Sedan. The power of the Merc is in a whole different class. The sound is seriously amazing. Cracks and pops all day long. The only getting used to is full throttling around corners from a stand still....I used to be able to do that in my S4 and it rode on rails.....the AMG....tails out and you're tire shredding

Well yeah the S4 and C63 are not comparable at all. The C43 is comparable to the S4.
