B7 Style Key Fob for B5 S4 - Coded and Working!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've read many threads of people trying to get B7 keys to work in the B5 over the years, but have never seen anyone post about having successfully done it. A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon an eBay listing for an aftermarket B7-style key, but advertised as having a transponder supposedly matched to our B5 S4s. I received it yesterday, and it works! It's a great aesthetic upgrade over the factory key.

Here's a picture of the new key.

Here's a video of it working in my car. (Obviously the button doesn't need to be held down, which I quickly realized)

And, here's the eBay listing I purchased it from if anyone else would like to grab one.

It's the same as if you bought a new unpaired remote from Audi. I followed the RossTech process below. This consists, roughly, of putting an old key in the ignition and turning to "on" position. Then locking and unlocking the car with the new key in the driver's door, and pressing unlock.

Its got a round emblem with printed audi rings. The lock button on mine wore out very quickly and the range, quite frankly, sucks. I use my B5 key more than the B7. Nice to have a spare I guess.

B7 Style Key Fob for B5 S4 - Coded and Working!

Mine locks/unlocks fine from inside my house to the end of the driveway which is a good distance, and through a few walls. But it makes sense that an aftermarket remote may not be as good as OE in that regard.

My factory remote is two button (because sedan). They don't make the B7 one in that configuration though.

Sweet, I was looking at my A3 key next to the allroad and TT thinking how dated those two looked. Don't care about the TT but need to check part number on ar key tomorrow!

Check your part number. It should work on 231P, 231D, 231T, and 231E. Not certain on others.

Not sure, the two locksmiths I called both said they could do it without issue. No need for them to remove the blade or anything.

According to ECS, there are two C5 avant remotes. One, ending in 231P, is the same part number as the B5 avant remote. The other is 231"M" and is listed for 2003+ C5 avants. Not sure as to any differences, but they look identical, and more importantly, they both have the same FCC ID. That being said, this should work.

Would you do us a solid and compare the actual key 'blade' length when it's flipped open? The B7 uses a slightly shorter key-blade and I'm wondering if this uses the OEm B7 blade or they've come up with a housing that accommodates the longer B5/C5 blade.
It'd be awesome if we could transplant the already cut blade we have to the new remote. Otherwise there's some delicate dremeling to make it fit, or go have one cut. Locksmiths in my area are completely useless. The ONE locksmith here in town has the proper machine but I have never heard of anyone having a key cut by them.
I've called and asked if they'll cut a key, they say yes, then when you get there they just refuse to do it. Fucking insanity. Then you call the dealer and try and get a C5 key cut by vin, except please use the blade from the B7 line. NO AMOUNT of explanation is enough to get the concept across to them. Idiots.

Should work! The B7 style hinge extends out further from the case before the blade starts, giving the impression it's longer, but the actual blades appear to be the same length.

@rollerton And they did change the case, because the B7-style key overall is not shorter than the B5 key, it's actually longer when you include the hinge.

Here's a factory B7 key (left) vs this replica key. You can see they removed some material from the case to allow for the longer overall key length.

And the panic button is gone, plus it's aftermarket internals also.
Happy with the key, works great :)

Interestingly I just recently found out that rest-of-world Audi keys don't have panic buttons...

I love this! I have a B6. Can I only use the B7 fob as an upgrade or will this work with B8 fob as well?

There was a guy somewhere around Frederick or Montgomery County that I used a while back. Specialized mainly in VAG stuff. I'll have to search old e-mails and see if I can remember the name.
