RESPRAY preparation. Any experience and advice?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi guys, I have begun to strip down my car to prepare for a respray. I will be doing a semi-closed door respray of the same colour (Mauritius Blue LC5Z).

I am pretty confident in my ability to do this. I have done some major research on technical and prep work. I plan on adding some copper fleck to the first clear coat.

    Any thoughts, advice etc?

Gee,you're keen mate, don't want to burst your bubble but....I have done a lot of spray work mainly on boats using 2K paint ( I'm a shipwright) ,a few kitchens and yes some auto panels.IMO this is something where a lot of hands-on experience is needed that just can't be gleaned from internet research...Gun setup,thinner/reducer/ratio,and then ....just using a spray gun.
And that's only only the first problem...lol
You will need an absolute dust-free environment unless you are going to be satisfied with an obvious amateur result. I don't mean just pulling down the roller door,it means a spray booth with dust extraction also you will need dry air, meaning water vapor extraction-a small shop compressor with no drier just wont cut the mustard. Please don't take my word for it ,go to several panel shops and put your idea to them and hear their response.Others will chime in here as well.I'm all for hands on do-it-yourself as you probably know by now,but this concept is in another box.....I wouldn't attempt to paint Wolfie !

Edit: Why the respray ? but If MB is a dark blue, that color is one of the most problematic paint colors, particularly prone to chalking due to heat absorb and pigment loading.....
    Guten tag-Wolfgang's my name,I'm an Audi A4 B7 Q S-line with 6M in handsome avus silver complemented with Alzor 349's/Mich PS riding on Vogtland/Hypercoils,APR1 tune,USP cat/obx dp,034 bar/sd mounts,ceramic tint but hoping for more..
Other Ride-Can't tell you my name because I'm pure stealth- Ford FG Turbo Ute in winter white (google me) tuned to 400hp,tuned ZF6HP26 trans, suspension and subtle aesthetic enhancements.Wolfie and I have never raced but I know who'd win !

The guy above is prolly completely accurate, but I would say go for it. I mean these car aren't worth much anymore. Why spend a fortune on a new paint job when you might be able to get decent results by taking your time and doing it yourself. I'll be interested in seeing how it turns out.

Yes, please post pictures as you do it. I would be interested in doing it someday as well, I think it can be done. I've seen paint jobs done outside of a painting room, even though they had a painting room...

Many paint shops cut corners I think

Remind me:did you use a nibbler,cut-off disk or just an axe ! lol

I didn't want to sound harsh or too discouraging but you asked and I told from my experience-and I have had some massive fails over the decades.
Yes,it can be done but it will be near impossible to get a professional result unlike the we do on our cars where in a lot of cases the result is waay better than taking it to a dealership or Indy....
Try to do this at least:
1.Get a screw on filter that fits on the air inlet of your gun,it has pink desiccant in it which absorbs oil and water vapor-one should do the whole job depending.....
2.Dust-the killer. You can make a quick spray booth out of plastic sheet/pine frame for spraying small parts, a whole car is more difficult.I have made them over temporary benches for eg.
Wet the floor down with a hose first as dust/contaminant rises as well as falls.Try to move slowly when dragging the air hose etc .Tack rag the part immediately before starting and the spray gun, mask etc.
3.Try to use a non-linear two pack as these are sandable, buffable finishes ,most Auto paints are off-the-gun and can't be wet sanded ( except finishing clear which can be buffed )
4.Wear a mask-although not recommended, a dual canister with carbon is a bare minimum-polyu is extremely toxic and a know carcinogen.
Lastly if you get curtaining, sags or runs-on a panel-wipe off the whole panel/part immediately with thinner as this is way easier than sanding it off later as the sags will take days until they can be sanded in any case.Tip: horizontal surfaces are much easier to spray than vertical in this regard.
    Good luck !

    EDIT: Spelling..

Okey-dokey, I am right there with you on this...lol. I have done a lot of out of the booth jobs. Like Ringsby4 said, and take your time. Don't rush or get impatient. Don't cut any corners.
I too would love to see it upon finishing good luck.

Bog, small dents in doors, moulding the spoiler better etc. Basically straightening out the lines, any chips in door edges etc.

Lol. Good luck. I originally was going to attempt the same thing on my Avant, with a similar starting position as you. I did body work, sand, body work, sand, primer, sand, body work, sand, more primer, shaved, sand epoxy primer, urethane primers and much more sanding. I came to the realization that was mentioned above about all possible deviates . Painting a car is not easy at all. Many do it and that's fine but many people like myself want quality so it's a preference stance. I took mine to a pro after I did all the prep. After so much effort I just wanted a premium paint job. The main concern I see is Dust/trash in your paint. Can't wait to see it! Good luck, post some incremental pics please.

Okey, that blue tape on the bottom of door chrome trim would let all manner of overspray through,I can see big wrinkles....The first run needs to be put up under the trim with the adhesive side facing yourself, then applicated with a plastic tool to adhere to the back of the trim ,then rolled around and worked so as its flat with no wrinkles....And so on all the way around everything......masking is a big job,you will get faster with time, but DON'T be in a hurry.
Keep tension on the tape and gently press and release until you get the line just right.Use the back of your thumb (nail) to press down when you're happy.Do the same again within 20 mins of starting spraying.
Masking tape application is another art altogether.....
PM me if you have any doubts mate !

Thanks mate, but that tape is special trim tape and goes completely behind the trim. It's also only there for sanding right now ;)

Sanding sucks ! That's for sure, dirty demoralizing work but it all comes together when the job is painted as you'll find
Try fairing a 50 foot catamaran.Equals 50 by 10 by 4 (inside and outside hulls )c = ~ 2000 sq ft of hull surface....The deck is harder as we use a hydraulic fairing machine for the bulk of the hulls but decks involve a lot of torture board work-don't even start me lol
I'm over all that now but have done my time
Found this vid, shows you how to splay the tape around corners:

Is there a way to decide what perfectly smooth is other than running your hand over it? Not exactly related but sanding and painting some spots in my house and getting it smooth is a pretty big concern. Feel like if it's not, it'll be much more obvious after painting (like it would be on a car too)

There's a difference between smooth and fair...
House painting is easy in respect of fair as most finishes are flat or satin which don't show irregularities or not being "fair" ,always use flat and not even satin if the surface is dodgy
Not so with cars of course which are invariably high gloss which accentuates every error
Smooth to my way of thinking means no crap on the surface to be painted which in a house is also pretty irrelevant..

    Once prep work is done
Shoot black paint over the primer.black gloss will show any imperfections in
    The body work.
If your body work looks good just scuff the black paint off back to primer and your good to go.
Watch the size of your metallic the bigger the more clear coats you will need to do,as it tends to stand on end.
Good luck with this project and newspaper works great for masking of big areas just make sure the machine holes on
It are covered or you will have spots all over !!!!

Yeah that's understandable, I'm repainting a wall in my room but all the other paint is also flat already. By the looks of this thread, I've decided any imperfections in my cars paint are now perfectly fine

Yeah I have some guide coat so I'll be using that! Committed to getting it as perfect as I can. Most of the car is fine so I'll just be scotch-brighting it. Taking my time. I have an industrial exhaust fan and I'm removing the small garage entrance door and replacing it with mdf and space for four large cheap pollen filters for incoming air. I'm preparing and then I'm going to spend a weekend cleaning EVERYTHING before final masking and then more cleaning and tack-ragging. Then surface prep/ primer, four coats. More blocking and more cleaning then base coat 4 coats, more tacking then 5 coats of clear and then polish (after cure time)

    Any thoughts, advice etc?
