Angry CTS Supercharger Pulley Fell off..Help!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So was driving last night and felt a power loss. no check engine or anything. Pulled over and seen that the pulley fell off with the belt.
Now this pulley has been on the car for at least 8 months with no problems. Put on by an Audi tech.

Noe what the hell would cause the pulley to come off???

    I will attach some pictures.

Are you sure the pulley was pushed all the way onto the shaft? If the temperature difference when mounting is too low it will shrink to early and has not full contact to the shaft.

Lol didn't cts have major failure with their oil catch cans as well or am I mistaken?

That pulley looks like it's defective at this point, but @8 months of use......thats crazy. How many miles did you put on it?

wtf... I just had my CTS installed. The tech told me its way harder to put in the pulley than other brands (too tight). So I guess they're measurement when making the pulley wasn't the best

What does the shaft of the supercharger look like? Any damage?
I wouldn't reuse the pulley. It looks gouged on the inside.

Personally, I would never put a cts part on my car and they are local to me......have you read any of their product descriptions? They refer to the B8 S4 as a turbo charged vehicle........ Just sayin

Did he install it backwards? Based on the way it fell in pic 2, and the stress/wear marks, I wonder if it was installed backwards!

In the second pic it's definitely back wards. Looks like the installer is the issue not the product.

I have the same pulley on my car for 10k and no issues. With multiple runs down the 1/4 mile. I'm thinking the same thing as FromRagstoS4.

it's backwards after it fell off and tumbled down but I'm not sure it could have been put on backwards because I don't think it would have lined up and not thrown the belt

This happened to me too with the CTS pulley, after about a month it came off while driving. I think the issue comes from not heating the pulley enough. They tell you 350* but by the time you take it out of the oven to put on the shaft it cools too quickly. Need to bake it at a higher temp. I don't think it was ever seated properly.

The shop that did the work ending up installing an apr pulley instead at no charge.

Yeah I definitely don't think it was on backwards and I suspect that it was probably lined up fine as well. If it was lined up even a couple of millimeters off then the grooves in the pulleys would not have matched up with the others and you would have been getting belt squeal and probably chewing through belts and throwing them. My guess is that some tolerances are night not quite as tight with this pulley

So I guess that means bake at 400 instead.

Two pulleys backed out so far? Anyone else have issues with the CTS pulley?

Haven't had a issue mine has been installed over a year. Had to bake for a hour at 400 and freeze the snout with canned air to get on all the way.

Thanks for all the replys guys.. The pulley was installed correctly.
But I'm concerned with the cracking and the wear inside or the pulley so
I will be calling cts tomorrow but don't think I will be using their pulley again.

I think so, just have to make sure its really seated on the snout I guess. Less room for error

I cannot remember the temperature I had to bake my pulley at to get it on.

It was 400+ though as it took multiple attempts and would not go on all the way at colder temps. This was with the toaster over 2 feet away.

My pulley hasn't't budged in the 10k+ miles I have on it now.

Hey guys ..Ive spoke to CTS and this is what they said :

    "
    Hi Sir,

Thanks for your email, each one of our pulleys is machined in house from stainless steel, made to exacting tolerances, and checked with a go/no go gauge that we made based on snout dimensions of the OE supercharger. It looks like in the fourth photo the material inside the shaft was bunched up most likely due to being forced onto the snout near the end of the installation. This can happen if the pulley is not heated enough to slide onto the shaft correctly. These pulleys require a higher heat than some others, but it does ensure that when installed correctly there is no way they can fall off. An easy way to avoid this is to heat the pulley for an hour or more with a good oven, while cooling the snout on the charger with ice."

The guy that installed this for me did mention that he had to use a rubber malet to get it on all the way so yeah...
But big thumbs up t the people over at CTS .They came through and agreed to overnight me another pulley for $50 :))

Well there you go. That's ridiculous. I had to go 450 (indicated on my toaster oven 3ft away) in order to get it to slide on correctly.

That would be a big red flag for me. What other potential damage (e.g. seals) was done by hammering on the pulley shaft?

Having installed the pulley myself, you only have a few seconds to slide it on all the way before it cools. It took me 3 tries to get it on all the way.

By the time he slide it on, grabbed a rubber mallet and "tapped" it on, I can tell you he'd have to hit it fairly hard to make it budge on the shaft. Hopefully he didn't do any other damage, but the fact he used a mallet in the first place would have me concerned.

Definitely installer error. That's NOT how you install it. Take it to someone who knows what they're doing, not a dealer ;)

Yeah i agree with you guys . Should not have to use a mallet or anything to hammer it on . Im doing it my self this time. Im going to try the ice and heating it at 450 for about hour and half

    1. Don't put it on backwards by accident....
    2. Use really good heat resistant gloves.
    3. Get the toaster oven as close as you can so that you can just pick it up and slide it on. You should hear it "clink" when it hits the back as far as it can go.
    4. You shouldn't have to use ice. 450 for an hour should be enough. If your toaster oven is trying hard but not quite enough, put it on broil for the last 10 mins.

My first try I ran from the oven 15 feet away and I baked it for two hours (iirc). It didn't slide right on, so I pulled it off and reheated it again. If it wasn't going on smoothly, I didn't want to push it.
