Catless downpipes installed. Strong exhaust smell

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Installed catless downpipes. Also 2 1/2 magnflow system. Car stinks like hell. Stage 2 GIAC tune. No leaks found. I can smell it in the car with windows up while I drive. Spent way too much $ on exhaust system and install to go back. Thoughts or suggestions?

These problems are so subjective. As long as the car is running well, I don't give two fucks what it smells like. I've never noticed anyone's car smelling bad from being catless, mostly because I just don't have a nose for that sort of thing.

Tune for 110, that will cut the smell down lol

I was afraid that was the problem. Not worth the gain in my opinion. Looks like I'll be putting the stock ones back on. FML for not researching before I dumped all this cash.

If you go back to cats get a metal core cats. I paid to have some cheaper ceramic core cats but they only lasted 3 weeks before they melted. Turbo car go figure. But once the cats were on life got much less stinky.

Its definitely not normal to smell the exhaust with the windows up. Highly probable that you have a leak under the car.

Hell, I have an M3 convertible with catless headers and cannot smell anything unless I'm at a stoplight.

I have never had any car do that except one of my drag cars. You have to have a leak or your exhaust tips are not far enough aft. If the tips are under too much than the smell comes up through your trunk and then back seat. See if the back seat smells first.

lol I did two weeks of open down pipes until I was able to get my exhaust welded up. That was intense lol.

Regarding the smell, I'm catless and can never smell it inside the car. It stinks quite a bit outside the car or with the windows down idling but I've never noticed it otherwise. I have a terrible sense of smell though.

Another advantage of having cats installed is reducing that black cloud behind your car whenever you get into the boost substantially.

Do a smoke test with the tails plugged. You can also tweak the idle fuel trim a bit. Whassup Melbourne!! I miss that town!!!

On a real note... I have gutted cats and SSAC twin 2.5". I don't notice the smell at all, but when I'm into it and I leave a car behind at night it's a dam smoke show.

    Ahhhhh yes!

This is me. I have no exhaust smell at all in the car when moving. I get a whiff sometimes at a stop with windows down but its just minimal. yes it can be strong with no cats but its really not that bad. less heat for the turbo's. And the exhaust sounds awesome. I have a Full Turbo XS catless exhaust.

Great feedback. I'm hearing no smell or minimal from some and stinky as hell from others. It could be the tune running the car on the richer side or possibly an exhaust lead. Gonna bring her to the shop on Monday for a lead inspection. Thank you all

You should give it a bit. Generally there's a coating on the inside of new pipes that has to burn off.

Easiest way to check for leaks is to start the car when its cold or warm, cover the exahaust tips with your hand, the pressure should build up, if it isnt then your leaking. Im catless, and although i dont like it that much its not as bad as what your describing

Definitely not normal, I'm cat-less and can't smell it at all in the car under any circumstance. As others mentioned you have a leak somewhere under the car.

Best week of my S4's life. Bliss at full throttle, guilt in residential neighborhoods, and terror anytime a cop was nearby.

A good friend of mine has been running open downpipes on his allroad for over a year now. I have zero clue how he stands it, and more so how he has not been ticketed for it...

I have open downpipes, but a 2 resonator exhaust. There's ways around the sound.

You mean catless or actually open as in no exhaust aside from DPs? The latter is what we're on about
