Got my crank pulley, cooler, and new tune installed. Put down 389 ft lbs torque to the wheels on a Mustang dyno. Looking at throttle body prototypes as we speak.

Nice. Do you have any baseline runs to compare against?

not really. Was running a stock file right before this. It put down 260 hp to wheels, in stock mode (with 1 pulley, intake, exhaust).

FINALLY, a break in the weather in Vancouver. Washed and prepped my winter wheels and put them in storage in my garage attic.

Also did a decent quick wash on the SQ.

Same mustang dyno? You were running a stock map with a s/c pulley prior?

yes, same dyno. We were trying to get a baseline and did several pulls. Realized either the dealer overwrote stage tune, or engineer put wrong file on last dyno run.

Any chance you did some logging that you can share (even over PM since this is a custom tune)? I'm still debating crank pulley sizing but have been leaning towards 183. I'm interested in seeing what IATs look like with the SQ5 setup with an aftermarket cooler and DP.

No, haven't logged in months. I had a device in my obd2 port, but it died(might just need a new battery, tbh). Been swapping out other devices like cam (reads info for overlay)and such.

^ Nice! I was actually just trying to figure out what the larger intercooler would look like through the black ops grill and whether it was possible to paint it without negatively impacting effectiveness.

Actually - OEM intercoolers usually come painted black. This is on purpose and improves cooling based on induction or some other heat energy principle I can't remember. Painting a front mount black only negatively affects cooling if the intercooler is in direct sunlight (rarely).

Aftermarket intercoolers aren't painted black because (1) it adds a large expense to production and (2) people generally like to show them off. I'm a grower not a shower, so I'm about that stealth life.

Doesn't add power, per se. Just keeps temps lower over time, so really depends on what you're planning to do.

I was thinking more about what type of paint works best for this application. I get the benefits of it being black from an emissivity perspective, but the paint might create more of a barrier to heat transfer (even supposed specialty paints). I'm thinking the color is ultimately way less important from a performance perspective than convection cooling anyway. At the end of the day, I'll probably just leave it as-is either way.

It depends on how you define "waste"! I think even stage 1, there's a benefit, especially if you see warmer temperatures regularly and/or are heavy on the throttle. You should try taking some logs to see what they look like when you first start driving (after warm up) versus when you've been WOT a few times and start getting some heat soak. High IATs can result in a noticeable drop in performance as timing gets pulled and the bypass is opened.

Totally agree. I think there is specific paints for this stuff, might want to look it up, I don't know unfortunately.

Yeah. I'm in Georgia, and the city street temps here push my thermometer over 100 pretty frequently. Plus, I may do some track time.

You are referring to thermal radiation, and specifically with a black body. Like wearing white in the sun and black in the shade to feel the coolest during the summer. This principle is really only relevant when there is little convection (air movement) present though.

Our radiators/coolers are needed under acceleration where the heat transfer is all about conduction (through the radiator body) and convection (to the air). Although any added radiative cooling wouldn't hurt, it's simply insignificant in the big picture for us. The issue is anytime heat is transferred through a body, there will be a temperature gradient. Adding more body (paint/primer) increases the gradient...not desired unless you want to insulate something. The added thickness also affects the boundary layer of the fin and resulting convective heat transfer. Therefore, the only ideal solution for a black look is anodizing (microns vs. mms) OR designing the fin spacing for a precise application of conductive paint/coating of some sort.

I prefer the black look, but it's unclear if AWE still offers that and how they were achieving it. Also, forge used painted end tanks, which is a decent compromise.

Entertaining video and a fun experiment to show the principles. However, I hope you realize that nothing they did is at all representative of the operating conditions or the design parameters of the intercooler.

Took the car into get the airbag recall initiated. I'm on grest terms with my service advisor and he knew the car has a tune. Asked him to notate that I don't need the ECM updates, however the tech did the update anyway which blew away the tune.

Was panicking the whole way home that Unitronic had not yet prepared a new tune for the updated Audi software. Turns out they do and John @ Unitronic was able to quickly update my UniConnect account to reflect the new tune.

What could have been a bothering situation is now settled. Now I am to think my car was flagged TD1

For those who have yet to complete the airbag recall and have a tune without an at-home tuning solution, be prepared that your tune will be wiped if the dealership provides that new ECM updates.

I just bought a new to me 2012 Q5 2.0T. Now its time to get started. Stage 1 or 2? APR or GIAC? Either to coat the rims black or new rims. How to blackout the window trim and roof rails? Factory Hitch Kit or DIY it? So many questions and so many forum posts to get answers. Do I want know it it burns oil or not? lol. I had a B5 S4 with Stage 3 AWE ECU and all cool stuff. Loved the RS4 Bumper. I'm not looking to go to wild on the Q5, lol I said the samething with my S4. Thanks for all great ideas. Btw everyone has cool color names for their rigs. How do you know what the cool color name is? Mine is gray, lol I want a cool color name gray. haha

Thank you sir! I retained the factory airbox (slightly modified) as in my experience they out perform heat shield/hot air intakes when it comes to IATs as it is a true cold air intake.
