I got the KWE-BO1 adapter and installed it this morning, took a while to figure out where it goes, there was only 1 plug behind the radio that would fit it so I installed it and it did remove most of the static. There's still a small amount on low volume, but I was hoping this would allow me to use the stock sub and it looks like that does not work with this setup. I may be missing something so those of you who have done this with the stock sub and amp - did you feel you lost a lot of bass? The rear speakers work fine, but turning the bass all the way up and then flipping the subwoofer setting on and off doesn't change anything.

I understand why you'd want that, but an analog setup with proper shielding will still give you excellent sound. The only noticeable difference being the noise floor. If you can use balanced wiring you probably won't notice any difference between analog and digital. Chances are you won't be able to hear much difference while you're driving the car, if any. This is an automotive environment after all. Road noise covers up a lot of defects and pretty much masks any noise coming from your system unless you've got serious issues. The only real benefit I can see for having digital is if you're doing all of your processing in the digital domain.

Sounds like an amazing system. Too bad there's no way to install a proper head unit that is up to the same standard as the rest of the system. I finally broke down and sold my Clarion DRZ9255 on ebay. I've had it for about 6 or 7 years and bought it used for about $650. I listed it on ebay at the same price and it sold in less than 13 hours. I thought it would be the last head unit I'd ever own. It really is that good. Then I had to go out and buy an Audi and that went right out the window.

I assume you have a custom enclosure for the three JL subs. You probably have zero trunk space too. If I was still young and single with lots of disposable income I'd probably try and put together something like what you have, but old age and diminished hearing forces me to face reality, not to mention being married with grown kids and three grandkids. I require a bit more utility. If I was going to invest that much money into a sound system, it would be for a home theater. You just can't come anywhere near the same quality of sound in a car as you can in a decent home sound system, but I completely understand where you're coming from. Car stereos are more intimate and personal and a lot more fun. I do the majority of my music listening in my car so it makes sense to have a good system. I just wish we had better options for the Audi. Amps and speakers aren't a problem, but unless you have a high end head unit to feed them, you'll never get the quality of sound you're hoping to achieve. The best thing Audi did for their sound systems was to dump Bose as their supplier.

Guys, can we get some pics of the installs??

I upgraded my head unit a few years ago. Gutted it all. Went pioneer head unit, jl audio 900/5 amp, 12in shallow mount sub in left rear space, where sat radio unit was, then separates in the fronts in original locations. Sound is awesome and it looks stock-ish.

Fully functional with my steering wheel controls. Blue tooth quality is ok. I say that as I wish I would have tapped into original mic. Call quality while driving has suffered.

    Thx.

    Hi guys:
Have you upgrade to Alpine sound system ( SPC-200AU+SPC-100AU)? if yes, how about sound quality when comparing with B&O ?

Thanks for the tread, lots of great info here. I installed this head unit in my A4, now just trying to get the camera hooked up. I don't have parking sensors so looks like I need to hook up the reverse lead manually. Anyone know

    1) Which wire on the X701D-A4 is the reverse indicator?
    2) I'm assuming it takes 12v?
    3) Any easier place to get the 12v on a 2014 A4 than the read tail light? Any place up front to get the signal?

I figured it out and it's working now. Black/Gray from the tail light into Orange/White of the X701D-A4.

I just picked up a used X701D-A4 on ebay with the backup camera, camera bracket, KWE-BO1 adapter and probably more. The seller claimed it was only a couple of weeks old, but I never asked why he was selling it. It should be here by the weekend. I had already purchased the DVD drive previously so I've got everything I need to get this up and running. I even bought a pair of tweeter baffles for the door pillars so I could reinstall the originals if and when I ever decide to sell the car. Now I just have to find the time to do a complete install of my aftermarket speakers and amps. I'll probably just run all of the speaker wires and power and signal cables as well as the camera and video cable first and then figure out how I want to mount the amps. I need to see if my subwoofer enclosure will even fit in the trunk, LOL. I like to do custom installations so everything is neat and tidy as well as leave some functional trunk space. I have a feeling I may need to come up with a different subwoofer enclosure to make that happen or possibly get a new sub. I'll probably run all of the wiring and install the head unit and connect it to the factory speakers and amp until I can get the rest of the stuff installed. I'd prefer to only have to gut the interior one time. The nice thing about having the battery in the trunk makes running the power cables so much easier. All I need to do is run the remote turn-on wire from the head unit to the trunk and then wire up the amps later. I need to see if I need a special battery connector that allows me to add the heavy gauge wire to power the amps. I'd love to get this done while the weather is still nice.

I had to run the extra power from alternator to rear to deal with the power draw. Depends how many amps watts etc.. I was drawing 1700 rms. It was a lot of juice.

    A report on X701D A4

I wanted to share my experience of the X701D A4. I bought a used head unit from prkieffer (thanks, buddy!). The HCE252RD camera and trunk mount adapter and KWE-BO1 from Marco Meggio on ebay. Christian of Enfig Car and Stereo (the moderator of this forum) had offered free install on the head unit so he could learn the system and make an installation video for youtube. I took him up on that offer; he had the car for the day, while I went to NYC. (This is the recommended way to use Christian's excellent services.)

Some impressions: (i) the sound quality is slightly better than my stock Audi Concert (2014 A4 premium, 6 spd). Christian attributes it to the cleaner signal. (ii) USB and bluetooth audio work well on my iphone 6SE. Apparently one can also play video on the USB link but I haven't tried that yet.
(iii) Previous reports said that the access to all Audi car settings was similar to stock, but that is not my experience. The settings are grayed out on the X701D. Christian has offered to look at this again if I am driving past his shop.

The installed unit had a problem with accurate GPS positioning. It worked fine in a stationary car but couldn't keep up while moving. Alpine Italy's representative Mr. Baggio was very helpful when I contacted him and directed me to a firmware update that (according to the installation screen) seems to measure antenna gain and updates it. After this update the GPS seems to work fine.

So far it seems like a good unit.

Niakapa, I have the X701D installed in an 2009 A4 Premium Plus. All settings are available - nothing grayed out. Do have Christian look again. Sound Sensations in Marietta, GA did my installation. Contact Andrew on +1 (770) 429-1600 if Christian would like a second set of eyes on the issue.

    An update.

The ever-helpful Mr. Baggio came through again; he says

"you need that PARKING BRAKE is to ground. To do this, you need go on power cord of radio, cut a Yellow/Black cable
    and put it on ground."

He attaches a figure showing yellow/blue cable ( parking brake ), #9. So I am hoping this will indeed fix the issue.

I'm not running quite that much power. I have a 4-channel Phoenix Gold amp rated at 200WRMS x4 and a Zapco 500M mono amp rated at 500WRMS for my sub (I believe this may be at 2 ohms and not 4ohms, but I'd have to revisit the specs to be sure). I had no problem running this setup on my '99 Passat 1.8T right off the battery.

Thanks for the review and info on the GPS. I wasn't expecting this unit to sound significantly better than the stock unit, especially with the stock speakers and amp. I have a feeling this unit will perform much better when the rest of the system is upgraded with better speakers and amplifiers.

Just got my X701D-A4 yesterday and spent a good part of today checking the inventory of parts and getting better acquainted with the installation. One thing that's not mentioned anywhere is that if you use the DVE-5300 DVD player for the U.S. market, you have to remove the front bezel or else the control panel can't be mounted on the brackets in front of the DVD player. The front bezel protrudes much further than the European model and interferes with the front control panel. It's fairly easy to remove as there are plastic clips along all four sides that just snap in place so all you need to do is push then down gently while applying mild pulling pressure on the front bezel to keep the clips disengaged once they're free. Just work your way around the front panel until it comes free. There's a short wire harness attached to the front panel for the eject button that you'll have to disconnect. I removed the top panel so the upper edge of the bezel is already free. That makes it much easier to work your way around the other three sides to get it loose.

I'll post anything else I find if something crops up. The installation video on YouTube makes the installation pretty simple. There's a good bit of pre-assembly that needs to be done before actually installing anything in the car so I'm just doing that part while sitting in front of my PC.

Thanks for the offer. I'll call him if I can figure it out. The used unit already had a video bypass that I assumed was wired right. niakapa came back with his wife and another couple as I was finishing up the job so I didn't get a chance to play with the system so I must have missed the OEM setup.

I'm still looking for a car do do an install video. The harness was already prepped by the previous owner so the wiring is not as neat as I would like it for an enfig video. (nothing was wrong with it I'm just OCD with wiring).

Also I need the car for a few days as this install would only take less than half a day but when you video the entire install it takes much longer.

Christian - There's a fairly detailed installation video on YouTube for the X701D-A4, but there are a few things that could be added, such as wiring the video bypass harness or installing the KWE-BO1 adapter. Installing the camera and running aftermarket wiring would be extremely helpful as well. There's one segment in the video where it looks like the installer is placing a piece of tape over the old display harness connector, but his hands are in the way and it's near impossible to tell what's actually going on. I posted the link to the video in post #79 of this thread.

X701D seems to have disappeared from ebay. Just a couple months ago many European dealers were selling it. I wonder if Alpine is cracking down on such sales? Or preparing to introduce it to the US?

Christian, Mr. Baggio wrote one little wiring that remains to be done on my car. (Possibly that thing is only required for manual transmission cars.) I'll forward the instructions to you in pm.

FWIW those who want to take up Christian's offer, he is a reasonable uber distance (about $10-12 each way) to Newark and Secausus train stations. (I could only leave my car with him for a full day, and he now realizes he needs it for several.)

Thanks I got your email those instructions are how to bypass the unit. There already was a bypass in there that I thought was properly wired, my fault for not checking it. And it wasn't your fault I just expected the entire install not to take as long. It's probably better for me since your video was a practice run. Next car I can separate the radio video and the backup camera video into separate days.

Where is everyone buying this from now that the eBay seller is no longer doing so?
Also what would the approx. cost be for everything brand new without the DVD player?

Does anyone know if the X701D-A4 interfaces with the iPod adapter in the glove box? I forget what Audi calls it, but you know what I'm talking about, right? I bought a USB adapter to use in place of the iPod adapter when I first got the car and I never checked to see if it would work with this head unit.

Here's Marco Meggio's ebay store. I'm sure he will still work out a deal with you if you contact him. Just because he's no longer listing the X701D-A4 on ebay doesn't mean he won't sell you one. I'm sure he'd love to have your business.

I just installed the Alpine HCE-252RD backup camera using the KIT-R1AU installation kit in my 2014 Audi A4 B8.5 Premium Plus S-Line. The instructions that come with the camera and the installation kit are pretty vague so I'm here to fill in the blanks. I normally like to take photos and post them for things like this, but I got lazy and just didn't do it this time. Instead, I have provided links to the B8 A4 ETKA that shows the location of each part called out in the steps. Open them up in separate tabs and it should be easy to locate the parts as they are called out.

    1. Remove the rear license plate from the vehicle.

    Figure 1: https://audi.7zap.com/en/usa/audi+a4.../8/827-827000/

    2. Remove the two Torx screws (Figure 1, items 28) securing the license plate trim (Figure 1, item 27) to the rear panel of the car. The license plate trim is attached with double-sided tape (Figure 1, items 26) so you'll need to gently pry it loose to remove it. You will not be able to install the mounting kit with the camera if the license plate trim is installed.

    3. Open the trunk lid.

    4. Pry off the two long rubber stops (Figure 1, items 13A) at each end of the trunk lid liner.

    5. Remove the cover (Figure 1, item 16) from the trunk lid latch (Figure 1, item 14).

    Figure 2: https://audi.7zap.com/en/usa/audi+a4.../8/867-867090/

    6. Remove the cover cap (Figure 2, item 11) from the inside emergency trunk latch handle (Figure 2, item 10) located on the inside of the trunk lid on the driver's side and disconnect the ball from the end of the cable. Pop the emergency trunk latch handle (Figure 2, item 10) out of the socket that retains it.

    7. Remove the two Torx screws (Figure 2, items 8) securing the trunk lid liner. One screw is located inside the area where the emergency trunk latch lever was mounted. The other screw is located inside the handhold on the other side of the trunk lid liner.

    8. Pry open the two panels at each end of the trunk lid liner behind the tail lights.

    9. Pop the trunk lid liner fasteners (Figure 2, items 2) securing the liner to free the liner from the trunk lid. There are four fasteners along the top edge of the liner, four along the bottom edge, one at each side just inside the two access panels, and one on the driver's side along the left side of the liner. I didn't actually count them, but I'm looking at the ETKA parts list for my 2014 A4 and they show eleven clips. All of the clips are on the outer edge of the liner so you shouldn't have any problem locating all of them.

    10. Detach the emergency trunk latch lever cable holder from the clip on the back side of the liner and remove the liner.

    11. Look up inside the trunk lid at the rear of the trunk latch assembly (Figure 1, item 20) and you'll see the cable connected to the back of the trunk latch release switch. Push the small tab towards the driver's side and disconnect the cable.

    12. Use a 10mm socket wrench and remove the two nuts (Figure 1, items 21) securing the rear of the trunk latch release switch to the metal bracket (Figure 1, item 22).

    13. Remove two 10mm bolts (Figure 1, items 23) securing the metal bracket (Figure 1, item 22) to the inside of the trunk lid. There's a cable attached to the bracket so carefully move the bracket out of the way to allow access to the trunk latch release switch.

    14. There are tabs on each side of the trunk latch release switch (Figure 1, item 20). Push in on one of the tabs and apply firm pressure to break the seal on the release switch assembly. Once it has broken free, push in on the remaining tab and remove the trunk latch release switch.

    15. Assemble the camera and the KIT-R1AU per the supplied instructions.

    16. Insert the camera and the new trunk latch release switch assembly into the opening.

    17. Position the switch bracket (Figure 1, item 22) inside of the trunk lid (Figure 1, item 1) . Insert the camera cable through the round opening in the switch bracket and position the bracket inside the trunk lid so that the two threaded studs on the rear of the trunk latch switch assembly protrude through the holes in the bracket.

    18. Thread the two nuts (Figure 1, items 21) onto the studs on the rear of the trunk latch release switch, but do not tighten them.

    19. Line up the holes in the bracket with the trunk lid and install the two bolts (Figure 1, items 23) to secure the bracket.

    20. Tighten the bolts (Figure 1, items 23) securing the bracket (Figure 1, items 22) and then tighten the two nuts (Figure 1, items 21) securing the latch release switch (Figure 1, item 20) to the bracket. Do not overtighten the two nuts or you could damage the switch housing.

    21. Reconnect the cable to the rear of the trunk release switch. At this point you should be able to operate the trunk release switch and hear the switch actuate.

    22. Remove the cover (Figure 1, item 32) on the passenger's side trunk hinge (Figure 1, item 2). There are tabs on the underside of the cover that hold it in place. Just press in on the tab and release it from the other side of the cover. Remove the cover.

    23. Open the access panel on the inside of the trunk on the passenger's side.

    24. Attach the camera cable to the cable harness from the backup camera. Route the cable along the existing wiring harness and down through the opening for the trunk hinge. I wrapped electrical tape around the camera harness and the existing harness to secure the camera harness.

    25. This is as far as I got with the camera installation. I don't have time to route the cable to the front of the car at this time so it's a good place to stop. Bundle up the camera cable and place it inside the access panel opening. Close the access panel.

    26. Replace the cover (Figure 1, item 32) on the trunk lid hinge (Figure 1, item 2) and make sure the tabs are all securely latched.

    27. Position the trunk lid liner on the inside of the trunk lid and secure the lower edge starting with the the two clips (Figure 2, items 2) in the middle followed by the two outer clips. The holds the liner in place and keeps it aligned for the next step.

    28. Insert the emergency trunk latch release cable into the holder on the inside of the trunk lid liner. It's a bit tricky so be patient. I found that inserting the cable keeper in the bracket first and then working the ball through the hole works pretty well.

    29. Secure the trunk lid liner with the remaining clips (Figure 2, items 2). Make sure the liner is properly positioned over the two rubber stop buffers (Figure 1, items 12) on the inside of the trunk lid as well as the latch assembly (Figure 1, item 14).

    30. Install the two Torx screws (Figure 2, items 2) securing the trunk lid liner (Figure 2, item 1).

    31. Reattach the emergency trunk latch release handle (Figure 2, item 10) to the cable ball and snap the handle into the holder. Reinstall the cover cap (Figure 2, item 11).

    32. Close the two access panels on each side of the trunk lid liner and close the trunk lid.

    33. Reinstall the license plate trim (Figure 1, item 27) and secure with two Torx screws (Figure 1, items 28).

    34. Reinstall the rear license plate.

I may document the process to route the cable to the front of the car when I find the time to do so. The instructions show it routed through the headliner, but the cable appears long enough to route it just about anywhere you like. I plan on installing speaker wires inside the channels along the running boards so I will probably run the camera cable in the same fashion.

Did you try contacting Alpine Europe to see if they can provide you with contact info for any dealers that might still have them in stock? I'll bet there are still some of these units sitting in a stock room somewhere.

Got a question for X701D-A4 owners. I just installed mine over the weekend and finally got it up and running. I connected an SD card reader to the USB cable, but it's not being recognized by the head unit. After looking in the manual it says that only an iPod/iPhone or USB flash drive can be connected to the USB connector and that connecting other USB products may not work. It also makes it sound like certain USB flash drives may not function correctly. Has anyone tried using a USB flash drive with this unit? If so, which brands have you had success with? Any special issues or concerns about formatting the flash drive?

I haven't hooked up the rear view camera yet, mainly because I was short on time and couldn't tear apart the center console to run my wiring. I have other wires to run for my aftermarket amps and speakers, but that may get postponed with the weather turning cold. For now I just want to get familiar with the head unit and get it working with the stock configuration before I take a major leap with the rest of the upgrade. I've already installed a power distribution board with a ground block, fuse block, and remote turn-on relay. The next phase will involve mounting the amps in the trunk. Once I have them installed then I'll pull the door panels and fabricate custom mounting plates for the speakers, if necessary, and cover the door panels with sound deadening material. I bought a bunch of Raammat for my last install and still have a lot left over. It works great and won't break the bank if you're looking for an inexpensive, but effective, door treatment.

I did experience something that was both humorous and downright annoying when I took the car out for the first time. The unit alerts me when I exceed the speed limit. This was embarrassing because my mother-in-law was in the back seat and the head unit kept bitching at me about going over the speed limit. I had to turn the sound level down all the way for the warnings so it was muted. I have no idea what other types of things it warns me about, but I may never hear them now.

UPDATE: I had a Sandisk 8GB USB flash drive that I formatted as FAT32 using Rufus (i.e., freeware USB flash drive formatting tool). I then simply copied the entire contents of one of my SD cards containing albums and a playlist. When I plugged it into the USB cable attached to the head unit with the USB drive selected it was recognized right away and started playing the first track of the first album in the playlist. I was able to navigate through the playlist and pick a different album, but it's a bit more cumbersome than using the stock Audi head unit. There are some things I wish Alpine had retained with respect to the way things are controlled via this unit. I'm not a huge fan of touch screens and I think it will be more of a distraction when I'm driving. I see a long learning curve ahead with this unit, but if it lets me use my own amps and speakers it's well worth it.

Initial indications show that you can only connect a USB flash drive directly to the USB cable. A SD card to USB adapter is not recognized. or at least the one I tried wasn't. I have a 2nd one that I will test to see if it works, but I'm not holding my breath. I also tried playing several CD-R discs and the DVE-5300 spit them out without playing them. I may have the HDMI setting at HDMI instead of DVD so that may be the issue. Growing pains are always such fun.

I have had both the x701d and then removed and installed the MMI 3g+ system. 100% retrofit 3g+ cheaper and way way better!!! Google maps, oem camera - screen better everything all around is nicer and less expensive.

you can find it in the DIY link compliation which is stickied at the top of B8 section

i was lookong this setup now i am wondering if maybe just using their speaker upgrade kits and going oem on everything else so i bought all 3g + now deciding on buying B&O swap or going with 2 kits cuz for some odd reason the front speakers are a seperate kit its probably cuz our front speakers are so odd they have no depth at all theres no room for a deep woofer.

I've only been listening to the X701D-A4 for a couple of days and so far it doesn't sound all that much better than the stock Audi Concert unit. Then again, I'm still using it with the stock speakers and amp so I expect that to change once I get my own speakers and amps installed. I'm having issues with the DVD unit that I still need to work out. I can't tell if the DVD unit is defective or I don't have it connected properly. I'm thinking it might also be a bad HDMI cable. When I insert a disc it spits it right back out and displays a mechanical error message or something to that effect, so that leads me to believe the unit might be defective. The manual says I have to set up the HDMI setting to DVD, but when I try to access it to set it up the HDMI option is greyed out and I can't select it, so I'm also thinking it's a bad HDMI cable. I plan on pulling it this weekend to swap out the HDMI cable and see if it fixes the problem. I just ordered a 0.5m HDMI cable and a 0.5m USB extension cable to cut down on the excess cable mess behind the unit. It's a friggin' rat's nest back there.

UPDATE: I was able to access the HDMI option selection and changed it to the DVD setting. When I try to insert a CD it only goes in halfway and then gets ejected. It appears that the loading mechanism is stuck and won't fully accept the disc. I spotted another unit on ebay for a great price so I jumped on it. I'll swap them out when I get the new drive and see about getting the other drive repaired or checked out at an Alpine Service Center. I'll put it on ebay after I get it back.

You've aroused my curiosity about the MMI 3g+ setup. Does it allow for connecting aftermarket amps? Can it be used with an Audison Bit One or other DSP unit with optical input?

Never mind. I just checked the DIY links and they're saying the cost of the retrofit is in the $4-5K range if you can source the parts from ebay or other sources. Dealers parts cost is around $10K. That is way beyond anything I want to spend, considering I already have the components I need to upgrade my system with the Alpine unit.

Mine recognizes SD card reader. Note that Alpine is a windows based system and SD cards have to be formatted according to windows standard.
