    RS5 Transformed: KW DDC Coilover System

    Redline Speed Worx (RSW) recently had the opportunity to work with an avid track enthusiast on both upgrading and fine tuning the chassis of his 2014 Audi RS5!

    The owner came into our facility already well aware of the capabilities of the KW DDC Coilover System upgrade, and wanted our skilled help in both the technical installation of the product as well as fine tuning the vehicle’s new suspension system for optimal balance of road & on track performance.



    WHAT IS KW SUSPENSION’S DDC COILOVER TECHNOLOGY WITH ELECTRONIC DAMPING CONTROL?

    With the new Dynamic Damping Control, DDC, KW has designed a new coilover suspension, which uses the original 3-way button to adjust the damping. KW combines the individual height adjustability of the coilover suspension with the adaptive OEM damping control.



    The driver can choose between 3 modes: “Comfort” for bad road conditions or just a relax ride, “Normal” for sporty daily use as the best compromise between performance and ride comfort or “Sport” for best handling and response.

    INDIVIDUALITY BY THE PUSH OF A BUTTON.

    KW DDC coilover kit stands for Dynamic Damping Control in combination with a proven KW coilover kit in stainless steel technology inox-line. The KW DDC coilover kit allows an individual lowering and three different damper setups by the push of a button for an easy adaptation to the respective road conditions. It can be chosen between a basic setup for sporty driving on normal roads, a comfortable setup for un-even/poor road surfaces and the extra sporty setup for maximum driving dynamics on well maintained roads and race tracks.



    The different damper settings will be controlled electronically with a proportional valve that regulates the flow of oil in the damper in milliseconds. The KW DDC coilover kit is available as “DCC Plug&Play” solution for VW cars with standard electronic damping control for an easy replacement of the series dampers. With the KW DDC coilover kit “DDC ECU” an electronic damping control system can be upgraded, which also may optionally be controlled and programmed via an app.

    KW COILOVER KIT DDC “PLUG & PLAY”

    The Plug & Play solution of the KW DDC (Dynamic Damping Control) coilover kit was developed for VW/Audi models, which have a standard Electronic Damper Control (VW/Audi DCC). The standard dampers can easily be replaced by the KW DDC coilover kit.



    The existing control unit and the interior switch that was installed for the operation of the damper control will be kept. For the first time the KW DDC coilover kit combines the advantages of a KW coilover kit and the comfort of standard damper control. By pushing a button, the driver can choose between Comfort-,Normal- and Sport-setup. Also the KW coilover kit allows an individual lowering in the TÜV-tested adjustment range.

    KW DDC COILOVER KIT “DDC ECU”

    The KW DDC (Dynamic Damping Control) coilover kit with ECU (Electronic Control Unit) was developed for individual lowering and installation of an electronic damping control system. The scope of delivery contains a KW inox-line coilover kit with electronically controlled dampers, a high-performance control unit, the car specific cable set with control switch and a detailed manual for an easy installation.



    The KW DDC coilover kit has three car specific developed damper settings. By the push of a button the driver can choose between the Sport basic setup, a very Sporty and performance-orientedSport + setup and the Comfort mode for un-even/poor road surfaces. The height adjustment of KW coilover kits also allow an individual lowering within the TÜV-tested adjustment range.

    KW “DDC APP” (ONLY FOR DDC ECU)

    Optional for KW DDC ECU solutions available damping control for iPhone, iPod or iPad. With the DDC app you can also save up to five own individual setups programmed by yourself, and share them with your friends via e-mail. A variable damper setting of 0% (maximum comfort) up to 100% (maximum Sport+), as well as the separate damper setting for front and rear axle is possible and will be transmitted via iPhone within milliseconds to the dampers. For the communication between iPhone and KW DDC control unit, a KW DDC W-LAN module is required.

    SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED.

    During the course of the installation of KW DDC Coilover upgrade on the Audi RS5 we also took this time to install & complete a few additional upgrades to further enhance the abilities of the RS5. The first of which was a set of SPC Adjustable Upper Front Control Arms. As every AUDI owner knows, there is limited ability (on stock components) to dial in both camber and caster. The adjustable upper SPC units solve exactly that problem, and when setting a vehicle up for both optimal road & track day driving characteristic’s this is a crucial component.



    Upon completing the installation of the upgrade on the Audi RS5, the vehicle went right onto our Hunter Engineering Hawk Eye Alignment Rack to perfectly dial in the Audi’s front & rear suspension geometry!



    Due to the customer being an avid track enthusiast we wanted to ensure his newly equipped RS5 was 100% dialed in, therefore we opted to complete a full precision corner balancing service. Setting ride heights via measurement on a level surface was just not going to be enough, we had to very accurately measure the weight on all four wheels at the same time.



    What’s the point? Well the amount of weight or pressure on each tire will affect the amount of grip that tire has. Ideally all cars would have 25% of their total weight on each corner. This would give completely neutral handling during cornering, acceleration and braking. Unfortunately it is rarely true apart from exotic mid engine cars where the designer has not had to compromise weight distribution due to other design constraints.

    The finished product, aligned, and corner balanced sitting at final ride height.

    Could you expand a little more with the 'plug and play' ? Are you saying these dampers will interface with the cars MMI and allow adjustment from there?
    The install reads really well but the real thing people want to know is- how are they in real world driving, is it possible for the owner to write a post on how the car drives now these are fitted?

    Great post though, I've always been a big supporter of the KW DDC system, it works very well.

    Great post though, I've always been a big supporter of the KW DDC system, it works very well.
    This particular vehicle did not have mag ride in it hence why it wasn't touched upon in this specific installation. For the vehicles that do have the factory system installed in the vehicle there is an additional "plug'n'play" module from KW that must be installed at each corner of the vehicle. These components allow for the Audi Drive Select system to maintain 100% functionality with the factory mag ride shocks no longer in the vehicle.

    As for the "plug'n'play" nature of the system, KW supplies (with the kit) a complete wiring harness that runs to each KW DDC shock and back to the DDC ECU which is wired into the CAN system of the vehicle. The DDC ECU then is able to actively make adjustments to ride quality based on vehicle speed. The system also includes an adjustment button that can be installed anywhere in the vehicle to toggle the DDC ECU / Shocks between the three (3) modes. At this time there is no adjustment via the MMI, although you can download an app which allows system control from your phone ;)

    Hi Pat:

    Forgive me for dredging up an old post, but I just stumbled across it. I own a 2014 RS5 and it is my understanding that US models do not have electronic dampening as part of the Drive Select package. I know "suspension" is not listed in the individual set-up in my car. I'm quite confused by your post. Please help me understand as I'm looking to up-grade the suspension for this very reason. Thanks

    Hypnoguy,

    The DDC damper is fully adjustable electrically from either a separate button installed in the cabin (usually in place of the cigar lighter) or via an app for your smart phone.
    You can chose between 3 different modes and also tune the dampers to the settings you prefer, all from the drivers seat.

    This isn't controlled from the MMI so nothing needs to be changed on the cars settings.
    I accept a Stage II tuned S5 is quicker than an RS5

    One more question...do the dampers now only have three settings total or are there still the same number of compression rebounding clicks as non-DDS KW V3's? Or do you specify the compression/damping setting for each of the three electronically selectable settings? The latter would be ideal.
