W8 motor wasn't problematic.... actually less problematic than the 1.8T. problem was that when something did go wrong, the motor had to come out to fix it (tighter fit than even a 2.7T in a B5 S4), and repair bills reflected that.
now though, VW dealers can't get engine parts for them, and if you do have an issue, VWoA would buy your car back and try to put you into a new passat 3.6 4mo.
