Clearing fault codes and passing emission testing

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    All,

I have a 2001.5 B5 S4. Not one day after I bought the car, a CEL appeared. I took it to the dealer and they diagnosed it as a O2 and potentially at CAT problem. I am working with the dealer that I bought from to get the replacement parts (free of charge).

Question I have is this. I just bought (in the mail as we speak) a V-Checker from ECS and the description stated that it can clear the fault codes.

Ok so this is what I want to do. My temp registration is up on November 1st. Arizona law dictates that I must emission tested the car before I can register it. With that said, if I clear the codes myself, and bring it to the emission testing, will their equipment pick up any faults? Do you think I will fail emissions?

Once I get the car registered, I will repair the car, as I was planning on replacing the O2 sensors and getting a full exhaust anyway.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks!

Im not sure about Arizona but I am in Washington and my friend got an s4 recently. He had a CEL and failed emissions. Checked with my vagcom and he had 12 codes. We cleared them all and got it tested again right after and it passed. The CEL came back 40 miles later obviously. These were his codes btw.

This is not a good sign.

arizona, you need to pass rediness, so no codes and you have to have the emission components set. Had a friend in az recently who failed cause rediness was not set

    what part of Az?
anywho depends on how long the codes are cleared for, as you may know they shut the car off & turn it back on. As long as your codes are cleared when they turn it back on, you should be fine. Did it w/an old Nissan.

Most states, if not all, follow EPA guidelines regarding readiness. Cars MY 96-00 cannot have more than two unsupported/not ready components. 01+ no more than one. However, why not just go for inspection, fail, and then get it repaired? You'll be within the law, and have a certain amount of time to get the car repaired. And since you are, free of charge from the dealership, should not have any issues whatsoever.

Ok, so you can call me a noob if you want after I ask this question......whats a readiness device?

I would like to attempt to pass emissions so that I can essentially get it over with. Beside, I am going to register it for two years, and I would like to not think about it for that period of time.

I am in the Phoenix area. I see you are in Tucson. Do you know of any independent Audi repair shops in the Phoenix or Tucson area?

the guys at Audis4parts! here in Tucson:)
Brian can definitely help you out. Possibly just code out everything, to get you through emissions.

Readiness means that the engine has run through certain engine diagnostics. Usually it means the engine must hit certain conditions such as warmed up and running at certain rpms for a little while. Just because the car is started and stopped and there is no CEL it doesn't mean that 'readinesss' is set.

Take a look at the rosstech walk through on setting readiness: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index...PB_Engine_Code
