So i decided to plasti dip the chrome window trim today

    as is

took about an hour to tape because i didnt wanna get any over spray... maybe to much newspaper? to little? meh...

sprayed about 3 coats.. everything was looking good

i finished up the first side. i was very please with the result. very oem looking and clean. i thought i did a good job. then i open the passenger door.... the whole top piece came with it... i guess the plasti dip had stuck to inner door frame so when i opened it, all my hard work came with it. i dont have a pic of the messed up finish. i got pissed and took it all off cause it didnt look right with just the bottom black. guess ill try it again on my next day off. live and learn i guess... so pissed tho.

I did this as well unfortunately I didn't make a thread, I posted in the "What did you do to your B7 today" thread. I ran into the same problems. Our rubber door seals mate up to the car too flush (if that is a possible statement lol). It doesn't create enough of a gap for the plasti-dip to tear neatly. I was given a bit of advice that I should allow the plasti-dip to dry a bit longer and that is the reason it didn't tear cleanly (not sure how long you let yours dry? but I only let it dry for about 30-40 minutes). Anywho on the second try I cracked the doors about 5-6" and taped everything on the inside of the car of to prevent overspray.

Here are some pics of my results:

The top half of the trim should be sprayed with the doors open and a plastic drop cloth taped around the door frame.

Just a thought...would you have been able to run a x-acto knife along the door seal between the trim and the door to separate the two and avoid this from happening?

That works but really it's better to do it with the door open. I plasti-dipped all of my trim, decided I didn't like it a day later and ripped it off and went with vinyl, never looked back.

Also, from my experience with plati-dip, it's not the BEST material to use a razor blade on... it would prob help some, but with its "rubbery" texture, the razor will more than likely PULL the plasti-dip than it will cut it... but it's def worth a shot to prevent the same thing from happening again.

Edit - Atleast until the plasti-dip is FULLY dried, which takes a few days.

Exactly how hard is it to remove the door/window trim?

From what I read some time ago the majority of it isn't so bad, it's the triangular windows that are a PITA. From what I remember they are riveted in and you basically have to break the old one to get the new one in.

I considered vinyl but after I've seen how clean the plasti dip looks I'm gonna try it one more time. I'm gonna use a razor blade along the seals right after a i spray the first coat(before it dries at all) and rinse and repeat each time. Hopefully it breaks away clean. I'll post some pics up when i get it done.

I tried a similar tactic and it didn't work. To be able to cut the plasti-dip it has to be completely dry. Otherwise it will just tear and won't be a clean line like you are hoping for. Just trying to save you the headache, the only way that worked for me was to crack the doors and tape the door openings off to prevent overspray. Good Luck!
