VIDEO: My S4 beating an R8 V8 Spyder in an impromptu drag race.
From a stop, no launch control. Passenger in the R8 counts to three, we go on three. Neither of us jumped. R8 spyder was stock 2012 with about 700 miles on it. S4 is also a 2012 with Stasis ECU and exhaust. Moved both cars into their respective versions of "sport" and did no manual shifting. I expected the R8 to start to reel me in, but every shift had me pulling away a little bit more. Now, this WAS a spyder which has a curb weight of 60lbs less than the S4. A coupe would have obviously done a little better. Both cars had driver and passenger.
We backed off around 100mph (not very scientific, just a 'hey, since we're here, lets go try this' moment)
Edited to add: Also, my apologies for the R8 passenger's very sad use of iPhone 'vertical' video.

Always fun seeing a $60k car beat something that costs $140k+

couple questions...was the R8 a 4.2 or 5.2? do you have the updated Stasis tune or the older one? Things may have changed if you continued the race into 100 mph+. Awesome kill anyway

I believe the OP stated a V8 Spyder which would be the 4.2. However I would be also curious to know about the version of Stasis tune.

Slippery slope... there are a lot of sleepers under $5k that would toast both. Someone will always be quicker and cheaper.

+1
Although I can understand the joy of beating a new R8. Just be prepared if the same thing happens with somebody driving a Civic or equivalent vehicle.

I am sure any one here would go for the V8 R8 if we could afford it. It's just a sweet looking ride.

^ That's the V10.
I've driven a Revo tuned S4 and a stock R8 V8 Coupe. The S4 is faster, but the R8 is ALOT more fun to drive.

The R8 Driver had a good attitude and laughed. Doubt that he felt stupid or anything. He still drives the R8 at the end of the day.
Thy don't have V8 convertibles right? I thought the facelifted ones will, but you can only get the V10 in the vert currently.

Unless it has the R-tronic, which is a piece of crap

Yes, V8 was offered in convertible before the facelift.

R-Tronic is pretty terrible in auto mode - it isn't that bad in manual mode. The rev matched downshifts are pretty cool
Plus, launch control with the R-Tronic is absolutely insane - it revs to just about 6000 before the launch.
S4 is fun to drive, but the sensory experience that comes with the R8 tops that IMHO.

Great run! Cool video. We need more videos like this. Someone needs to teach the guy with the phone that it also records sideways, too.

It is a 4.2 spyder R-tronic. My car had the older stasis tune. Fit the tune done a few days after I bought the car new almost exactly a year ago. I wanted to try it with both cars using launch control, but it can be a pain timing when exactly the clutches drop on both cars. Especially with the R-tronic, you can get an unpredictable gap of time between letting go of the brake and actually moving.

If that was with the old tune - you should go get updated with the new tune - you will be VERY impressed. Had this vid been done with the new tune you'd have REALLY pulled on him. Nice vid never the less!

There are quite a few V10 R8s on local Audi Club track days. The V10 will pull away (in the straight - and also in the corners haha). I expect the GT even more so.
The only R8 V10 I overtook was in the rain (probably because he had more to "lose" if anything happened). In the dry, I got stomped on (though no surprise there).
(straight line speed/acceleration isn't everything for me)

This is very true. The first time I tried launch control on the R8, I took my foot off the brake, and nothing happened. I was puzzled for a second and then it dropped the clutch. Scared the shit out of me.

Nope, but I did pull on a Ferrari 360 F1 on the highway a week or so ago. We did 5-6 runs and I pulled every time. 40-90, 60-110, 75-130 or so (in mexico of course).
Reminds me, I also ran against a 430 on my way to a car show a few months back, and we ran neck and neck at various speeds.
My S4 has been dubbed "the Ferrari killer" for now. Hopefully I don't run into a 458 or 599, or I risk losing the name.
But yeah, a tuned B8 S4 walking a stock R8 4.2 is old news for me... raced a few around town. Blew the doors off of em every time!
Sometimes I think the S4 is magical...

Recently drove an F430... Tough to say if we could really walk one. Ill tell you what if that road in mexico had some curves that F430 would lose us fairly quickly. But its nice to know our cars car outrun a car that costs 2.5x as much. The 5.2 V10 is a different animal howeverr. But then again my buddy had a E60 M5 with Dinan tune and ASR exhaust plus lightweight underdrive pulley and intakes and we blew a V10 R8 doors off (on a closed course).

the magazines all have reported awesome 1/4 mile traps for them (111mph). however when i hit the strip, 2 of them were getting no better than 13.8 @ 102. i dont know if they were fake SS's or not and just threw a badge on there. i was stock that day and managed 13.2@106. i dont know what to believe anymore...

Lots of posers out here in Los Angeles with SS badged v6s. Makes me have zero respect for the owners and to a lesser extent the cars themselves since the camaro scene is comprised of posers. Who puts SUV DUBs on a sports car. I mean seriously guys every car guy things you're a tool.
