B7 a4 brake torque specs
Hey guys, just bought a set of b7 a4 calipers for my b6 a4 avant. slowly getting parts together to get them on the car but the one question i have is what are the T55 torx bolts that hold the caliper halves together supposed to be torqued too? I have looked at the 20 steps to b7 brakes thread linked below and there is a torque list but im not sure if any of those are the bolts im asking about. maybe one of you knows what those bolts are listed as in the torque specs in that thread or know what they are supposed to be torqued to. thanks guys.

200Nm (148ft-lb) (it says to hand tighten them in the DIY with no re-torque???)
Bolt the inner carrier half to the hub with the 2 bolts, then bolt it together once the pads are in?

Can you point out where in the DIY that's stated? Looked again and didn't see it, but im on my phone at work so I might have missed it

The carrier bolts to the hub at like 120ft.lb. I believe. Those 4 Torx bolts I'm almost positive should NOT be torqued to 1f40+ft.lbs. I will double check in my bentley when I go home in a little bit, just to be sure.
Also you dont need to undo the 4 torx bolts, you just take the dust boots off the to centrally located slide pins and remove those, then the caliper comes off in one piece. That also gives you the opportunity to clean and relube the slide pins, which is a very good idea. In fact I would recommend replacing them since they're like $20 on ebay. The tightening torque for those is 30NM.
Honestly thats a weird DIY. great pictures but no torque specs, and no mention of the slide pins or even proper disassembly of the caliper.... Personally, I wouldn't follow it to the letter as its a bit light on detail. I personally don't se the point in separating the caliper halves when you can do less work and remove the whole thing. Seems like a no brainer to me...
Edit: THIS DIY illustrates what I am saying about removing the caliper in one piece: http://audiworld.com/tech/wheel137.shtml

Thanks charles. yea, bentley torque specs for the carrier to hub bolts and the bolts that hold the caliper halves together would be great. I have no plans to install them in two pieces... will be going the one piece route via slide pin removal. thing is the shop from which i purchased the calipers from took two of those bolts out upon removal from the wrecked car until they realized they didnt need to, so i just need to tighten those back up and wanted to make sure the rest are torqued down as well. ill be upgrading to the b7 s4 brakes so im getting all new carriers from the ecs oem big brake bundle, so no need to replace the slide pins. plus i already painted the calipers so i definitely wont be breaking them apart anymore.

Oooh, very nice! I'm going to be upgrading my B6 to the B7 brakes soon enough. Still not sure if I want to go with black or silver. haha, decisions, decisions.
Also I forgot to page through my bentley at lunch. I'll try to remember to do it tonight.

you're telling me man. still trying to figure out what pads im gonna go with and all of a sudden im having second thoughts about going s4. seems like a lot more weight to add to each corner. but im hoping to go GTRS once the cars paid off, so so i think ill appreciate the s4's over the a4's at that point.

I'm curios if you find the torque spec for the four caliper bolts. I couldn't font it in my Bentley, they only show the two slider pins specs and the two big carrier bolts. There was a thread about this not too long ago but nobody had the numbers if I remember right.

Looked through my Haynes and my Bentley and nothing. I would say get them snug, maybe 20-30 ftlbs and throw some blue lock tite on for good measure. Given how hard it is to find torque specs for those bolts, I bet it's even harder to find one if you snap it.

The torque spec i posted was from the Bentley and for the 2 bolts, not the 4 on the caliber. Sorry bout that.
22ft-lb for the brake caliper to pad carrier (Bentley page 46-12)
That DIY link you posted is spot on.

ok so you're saying 22 ft-lbs of torque for the four bolts that hold the caliper halves together.
just checked the DIY again. this is what i see.
Brake caliper to brake carrier 30 Nm
Brake carrier to wheel bearing housing 190 Nm
so 30nm is what they are saying for those 4 bolts (22 ft-lbs like you stated) and then 190nm for the two bolts that hold the carrier to the hub.
I would have expected more for those four bolts, part of the reason I didnt take the calipers apart before painting was I couldnt break the bolts free, even with PB blaster, but they arent secured to the car and I didnt have a breaker bar or pipe to put on my ratchet. thanks for the info guys.

No. the 30NM is for the two bolts holding the caliper to the carrier. The 4 torx bolts hold the caliper halves together. I wouldn't touch those 4 bolts if you dont need to.

as stated earlier i need to tighten the two outside ones down as they were removed upon removal from the car.

ahh shoot sorry. Forgot about that. I really don't know. PM Bman005. hes a tech at a dealer and he can most likely find out for you. Hes a super helpful guy.
And yea the 30NM (~22 Ft. Lbs.) is according to the Bentley and the Haynes.

thanks man. torque specs blow my mind some times. seems like you'd want more than 22ft-lb's holding your brakes onto the car!

I know. And then the carrier is like a billion foot pounds. who knows. I'm sure Hans VonAudi has a very technical explanation as to why its all the way it is.

hold up, now im confused, unlike the b6, the b7 only has two bolts holding the carrier to the hub, then the actual caliper is resting on the slider pins from the carrier. there are no bolts holding the caliper to the carrier on the b7. i think the b6 is the opposite right. anyways i pm'ed that guy, hopefully he'll have an answer.

I posted asking the same question a few weeks ago. I took my calipers apart to make it easier to media blast them. I'm hoping to pick them up this weekend from powder coating. As for your question, the only info I found was someone posted the specs for that particular size bolt (M12x1.75 10.1) to be 93 ft/lbs. I think that may be a bit high so the way I'm going to approach it is to use loctite blue and start torquing to 30 ft/lbs and work my way up to 40, then 50 etc. until I feel like its tight enough.
Also, I reached out to a friend who is a parts guy at an Audi dealer and he could not find the specs either.

yea, i pm'd the guy charles suggested, and he said that audi suggests not taking them apart but to do the slider pin removal on the carrier for brake jobs, thats why they dont have a torque spec for those bolts. i too am just gonna go blue loctite and crank it down till i see fit.

Honestly I don't use torque specs unless its the engine the bolts on the caliper and carriers go in until they can't go any more its pretty difficult to over torque unless you are all braun and no brain.
