    New wheels - Ohhhh, yeah!!!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
VMR 710s, 19 x 8.5, ET 35, purchased from my favorite local Discount Tire store manager Matt Palmaymesa in Palatine, IL.

(08-29-2012 - Thread updated with better photos)

What I LOVE about VMR's version of this style of wheel, and VMRs in general, is the extra curvature of the spokes and the concavity of the wheel center. These curves make all the difference, IMHO - I really prefer them to wheels that are "flatter" overall.

Hope you like 'em - I know I do!

Question: Should I sell my peelers or keep them?

(obligatory apology for semi-crappy iPhone pics - it was the only camera I had at hand)

So many terrible choices of wheels over the last few months, I decided not to comment but these look very nice on the car. Good job!

Or get performance winter tires for the winter. They aren't just for snow. They grip cold asphalt better too. If you're going to have two sets, have the best tire for each season. My peelers will have dedicated winter tires late this fall and then I shop for new wheels for spring with a new set of dedicated summer rubber.

Thanks - I already have a set of winter performance tires (Dunlop WinterSport M3s), mounted on 18" Hartmann B7 RS4 reps.

Lol, sorry, was multi-tasking and didn't look close at the user name. If I did, I would have known you'd have this covered since you're often advising us newer members on various topics ;) Doesn't hurt to spread the word though as people sometimes think of winter tires as only being useful in snow versus overall cold.

Looks great! I was considering the exact same wheel or the BBS CH-R. I went with the CH-R.

Did you have to get the 8.5" wheels bored to 66.6mm? I was under the impression only the 19x9.5's came in our bore size stock.

P.S. I kept my peelers for my winter setup.

I really like the hyper silvers! I nice break from everyone's gunmetal and black wheels! I was considering these and wish I had gotten them. Next summer I'm getting new wheels again and may get these...

Also considering these - anyone seen a B8 rocking these?

Sweet! I think you'll find that it will be worth the wait.

The STaSIS suspension includes a fatter rear anti-roll bar with stiffer bushings as well as the progressive-rate springs and is really well-sorted.

I don't understand the logic behind using one of the cheapest wheels on the market and mounting one of the most expensive tires on the market to them?

Thanks, man! They'll be my everyday summer wheels/tires, and may end up on the track, too - we'll see. Saving unsprung weight will likely help if I do get to the track...

Who did that? Not, me, that's for certain.

The VMRs are mid-price wheels, and are good quality for the price paid. I've run another set of them in the past and never had any issues with them.

The Pilot Super Sports are a bargain in ultra-performance summer tires. Less than 10% more than Hankooks, but substantially better performance all around. They're also WAY cheaper than their forerunner the Pilot Sport 2.

Exactly. For the money, the PSS tires cannot be beat. Wish I made the switch sooner. Also, I've know plenty of people who have run VMRs and had no issues at all.

if you like the concavity, why didn't you go with 9.5 et 45? car looks really good, i just think those wheels are too popular. everyone is running a mesh these days.

    Thanks.

Funny you should mention that - VMR actually sent 9.5s even though I/we specifically ordered 8.5s. We mounted a tire (OEM size 255 section width) and I wasn't happy at all with the stretch or profile of the tire once mounted. This wheel swap isn't only for looks for me - I track the car occasionally, so wheel weight and keeping reasonably close to the OEM total offset is important to me, too. So, we sent them back and got the 8.5s that I wanted in the first place.

OEM wheel (note the squared-off profile of the tire edge and the straight sidewall)

9.5" VMR (note the rounded profile of the edge of the tire and the bowed sidewall)

I did think about the relative popularity of this style of wheel before I bought them, (plus the fact that they're a lot like what you see on many BMWs), but I liked them and am happy with the purchase.

I agree with you on the stretch vs. square look. The problem I had is that a 255 tire looks slightly "pinched" on an 8.5" rim and slightly stretched on a 9.5". A 255 tire looks perfect on a 9.0" rim. That is what I had on the rear of my old BMW 3 series with the OEM wheels. I chose the lesser of two evils IMHO with the 9.5" BBS CH-R's. On my next set of tires, I may try to fit 265's. They would have that same "perfect" fit of a 255/9.0". I'm not sure if I'd have the clearance (stock suspension). I'm trying to find someone who has done a 265 on a 9.5 ET 45 on a B8.5.

There is a different wheel for everyone. I like the VMRs, and I run BBS myself. And I agree very much on the choice of 8.5 vs 9.5!

i agree its personal choice, and i didn't say i didn't like them, i said they were too popular. i liked the 710' originally, but din't want to look like everyone else. so the v701's really grew on me after seeing them in person, but i think its ridiculous that if the wheel isn't in stock, they can't tell you when they will be in. i disagree with the 8.5 vs 9.5....with the right brand tire, with the rim protection rib, a 255 looks perfect on a 9.5. here's my 9.5's with the oem contis'....i don't see what all the stretch fuss is about...
