hey guys anybody had a problem with smoking brakes ? after like 20 min of hard driving in canyons.. with lots of breaking and hard acceleration, I stopped and noticed my brakes were smoking and smelled really bad , I know S4 is not a supersport car.. but I was little surprised.... I have a car very shortly and dont know what brake pads and rotors are in .. but 90% they are original OEM ... also they started to vibrate when braking thanks for any suggestions ............. new vented or drilled rotors ? better pads ? what are you using ?

Let them cool before you stop... driving casual and let some air cool them down. If they are red hot when you stop they will cook your pads and smoke and stink... It's always best practice to let a car cool down a bit after hard driving before parking it...

You cooked the brakes. You need to get something like slotted rotors and pads that can take the higher temps. I'd get new brake fluid in there too.

Lightweight are worse at shedding heat. They'd be a bad idea for you.

StopTech sells drilled rotors for our cars. I believe Racing Brake sells some too. So far haven't seen anything from DBA which is disappointing.

stoptech would probably be the choice, racing brake is almost 1000 bucks http://www.racingbrake.com/Two_piece..._11_p/2183.htm thats too much

Ask DBA if they are planning anything for our cars. Their slotted rotors have special cooling fins inside that work exceptionally well. I ran them on my B6 S4 with excellent results.

Vibration is likely due to your stock pads transferring material to your rotors. I had this happen at every track event until I upgraded the pads. I just did an event this last Friday and braking was smooth as silk on the same rotors that vibrated badly with stock pads.

There are many different pads. You need to select one based on your driving habits and the intended use. You obviously do not want a track pad on a street car, nor do you want a street-only pad on a track car.

JHM is supposed to have a 2 piece solution coming out soon for our cars. I would wait for those.

If they're "lightweight" you don't want those for extreme use. Less mass to absorb the heat.

There is more to brake cooling than simply mass. How much less mass, how many vanes, where the reduction in mass is, etc.

Exactly. My Stoptechs are lighter than my stockers, and have MUCH better cooling. Stock uses the exact same front discs on both sides, so one has the vanes correct, and one has them backwards - seriously imparing the airflow to cool that side. Likewise, the dust sheild on the stock brakes inhibits airflow to the rotors, remove them.

Also, don't get cross drilled, it weakens the rotor. Get slotted if you must, that works to shed water easier in rainy conditions, otherwise solid rotors are just fine.

Had them on my B6. Very good brakes. Not as grabby as I would like when cold, but it only takes one or two taps to warm them up.

Agreed, but I remember posts in the B6/B7 S4 forum where JHM (or someone else) said they're not necessarily intended for track use, whereas stuff like DBAs are.

I went with EBC Yellowstuff. Excellent when hot, a little more pedal pressure required when cold. No squealing so far so I am considering these for DD use. Will see how they perform when the weather gets wet and cold.
