Manual transmission grinding into 3rd and 5th gear
Recently my manual S5 has been grinding going into 3rd gear and 5th gear. This happens mostly when the car is cold. After I have been driving for around ten minutes or so, the problem goes away but the shifts still feel a bit loose. This only happens on upshifts and not when I downshift. If anyone could shed any insight into this problem before I take the car to the dealer, I would appreciate it.

Just wondering, When I throw my car from like 1st to 6th (when on the phone or busy eatin somethin) it'll grind due to rev mismatching( I guess)

As I have said before, put proper lubrication in the gas tank and tell mmi to sort it out. Has Chi ridden in your car lately? Maybe the boot is sticky causing difficult shifts?

does it happen when you shift slow, like driving Miss Daisy, or only when you're on it and trying to shift quickly?

haha it's at like 35 when I drop it into 6th, but it does suck, but sometimes i've got to do it cause some in cabin emergency is going on.

when the car is cold, it does that every time, slow or quick shifts. after the tranny warms up, this happens intermittently when i shift quickly.

You say not but then it doesn't add up.
thanks for your input. my 1-2 shifts actually do tend to clunk as well. but i got accustomed to this a while ago.
i always rev match when i downshift, but i do not get that grinding even when the transmission is cold.
i guess there is no singular cause of this issue. will wait to see what the dealer says.

I would start with a fluid flush if your car is not under warranty, but since it is, just take it into the dealer and let them figure it out.
-
Unscrew your shift knob completely. Spray inside the shift knob with compressed air. Let it dry for two seconds. No more, no less. Put it back on and screw it so that the gear numbers are upside down. That should work. I'm not sure why, but this happened with my clutch as well, and once I did the steps I mentioned above it went away immediately.

Same here. I had the exact problem and they replaced the transmission and clutch under warranty.

I think the Master and Slave Cylinder had to be replaced too, which was part of the problem.
