2013 Allroad w/ a black lab
We are in the process of consolidating into a one car family - we are dumping the Boxster S and MDX and aiming for a new Allroad. While we know our 85lbs black lab will fit - has anyone actually had experience living with an A4 Avant and a large dog...is it roomy enough to keep them back there for long drives or is it a little too tight?
...can't wait to get my hands on the car...Chicago claims to be getting the first deliveries in the next 3 weeks.

Get a roof box. You're not going to want to put your labby back there with all your stuff. It will be more comfortable for him to have his space as well. So he'll be in the back, your stuff is protected up top, and you can carry passengers!
That said, you'll also want to look into this thread: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...Cargo-Liner%29

i agree with socal. a roof box will make it all work. the hatch itself is big enough for a large dog. its just a matter of whether there is any room left for your stuff. even an 85lb lab wont take up the whole hatch. i have a 65lb basset hound and he fits fine in my avant with a couple small bags. if the whole family is on board, the roof box goes on.

Haha, even with an avant a dog sometimes takes up so much room! My 3 year old son, my girlfriend and my dog leave very little space in the car. Its like I need a roof box to fit all the crap in the car. I almost think a sedan would be easier.

I traveled with my 65 lb. English Setter in the back of my A5 coupe, and he had plenty of room. You should have no problems in the Allroad. I put his LL Bean dog bed for him ( http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/51665?feat=134-CL1) in the back with the seats folded down, and he was fine. Routinely took 8+ hour trips with him.
And yes...a roof box is a good way to go, if you want to carry a lot of "stuff". Use mine in the Winter when we have lots of extra cold weather clothes, etc.
Previous to the A5, I had an '08 SAAB 9-5 Aero Wagon that we carried not only the Setter, but also his 80 lb. good buddy Golden Retreiver. Again, used the Thule Box on that car as well to give the pups more room. They couldn't wait to get into the car and go for a "road trip". Miss them both.
You & the pup will be fine in the Allroad. Happy travels!

I know it looks tight, but there are TWO dogs beds, a body pillow on each side, AND a storage container (28x28x28) in there for his toys. AND there is enough space for my 100 lb doberman AND my friends 60 lb pit to lay in there comfortably. Let me tell you, for a car with a sexy sloped roof like this, it has plenty of storage.

Good thread and good answers! Definitely useful since we're planning on an allroad and have a 75lb Black lab mix along with a 55lb mutt.
