Coolant leak around oil pan and alternator with pics

Anyone know what could have caused this around this area? Car has 75k with original timing belt, water pump. I'm planning to do the belt at 80k but if it's the water pump leaking then I may have to do it sooner. Is the water pump a candidate for this leak around this area?
Is the pump around the left oil pan, and above the alternator?

The thermostat housing is above the alternator.

Will replacing just the thermostat not solve the leak? Is the thermostat and the housing all one part or separate?
I'm going to take it in for timing belt soon.

They are separate. It could just be a leak at the thermostat, but the plastic housing (if you have it) is what holds the thermostat in. Might of broken one of the plastic tabs that are on the housing that holds it against the motor.

thermostat housing is behind the timing belt, might as well do both at the same time is all I was getting at.

    2.7taudi-

We stock Timing Belt kits for the 2.7T here at JHM.

By the look of it, you may want to go ahead and do the whole Timing Belt kit just to be safe. If you were second guessing doing the Timing Belt job your self, our kit includes a very descriptive, step-by-step instructional DVD.

    Click Me For T-Belts!

We also have Thermostat Housings available for purchase that are the upgraded aluminum, compared to the plastic housing that Audi implemented in 2001.

Thanks for link, but i am going to be taking the car to a mechanic for this and i dont think he'll warranty the labor or parts if anything goes wrong.

So everyone thinks the only possibility is the thermostat? Ive posted this on audiworld and ive gotten everything. This is what they have told me:

    rear main seal casting
    aux coolant pump
    auxiliary water pump
    waterpump

Any of these even seem possible? lol

These are the same. Look under to intake manifold to see if you see coolant pooled up in that area, usually with a leaking aux pump it will leak towards the middle/back of the car. With the leak up front I would also lean towards the water pump/thermostat. Something on the front of the motor. Like everyone else said, time for a timing belt job

I will check that tomorrow. But as of now i have an update that might or might not help

The car seems to be leaking coolant only after a run and about an after the engine's been turned off. The coolant pool hasnt gotten any bigger in the past 2-3 hours since its been turned off. So i guess the leak isn't a constant dripping leak like i excepted and thought.

My expansion plug was leaking coolant. Going to suck for you to have to check this though.

Yes actually. I completely forgot to update.

The leak was from the thermostat housing.

He replaced it with another plastic housing. He said the metal ones are only for the 2.8? But Jhm has metal.

Just wanted to leave this here so people can tell if they already have a metal housing or not. Also, this is not a 2.8, so your mechanic is a retard.

You can see from this picture that this RS4 engine has a metal thermostat housing (I circled it in red), if you have a black plastic connection there, then you obviously don't have a metal one. This will help save a few bucks for people who don't know what they have, and might already have a metal one. :)

So I'm looking at an A4 2.8L, '96-'01 (b5) metal thermostat housing on ebay, that will work on my 01 s4? Making sure because the page says not compatible when I select my car.

It looks identical from the one crappy picture on the page, but it's from the opposite side of where the part # is located. I'll PM you the link so maybe you can help verify, I already messaged the seller.
