Water Meth Question: Will cutting boost be enough to save engine from detonation?

I am coming close to getting my water meth setup on my K04 S4. I am putting some safeguards in place, but my question is whether cutting boost alone will be enough. Basically, if I am running a water/meth map with advanced timing and my system suddenly detects a loss of flow under full load, will cutting boost from 24 psi to something like 8 psi be enough to stave off detonation and save the engine. My other option would be to use something like the JS Safeguard to also retard timing, but I'm wondering if the cut in boost (lowering manifold pressure and temperatures) would be a sufficient safeguard. Thanks!
