^that is good advice. This debate has been had so many times and it always seems like the best options for replacing a B5 S4 would be a Cayenne Turbo/996TT. Now, obviously we dont all have the money for that...its just hard to think about a car that has the same character as the B5. It really is an awesome size, looks great, and performs awesomely for what it is....keep her!!

I'd look for a Rallye Golf, RS4, Evo 1-6, R32 Skyline, or a 4door Golf R32. RS3 is a cool car tho.

No red tho.
Just wanted to say I feel the same way. Dream garage? S4 Sedan with r32 motor swap, S4 avant with the 2.7t.
Edit, I wouldn't mind a Legacy or maybe a Forester either.

For me there isn't a good replacement yet, especially for the money. With a good amount more yes, there are options. The biggest thing most cars lack is a good interior that isn't all plastic. That's probably my favorite thing about the S4 is that the interior still looks amazing and doesn't feel "old."

Try this on; S4 Avant, OEM RS4 wide body, turbo VR swap
That would be my dream B5.

went from my 2 stage 3 s4' to this
best move I ever made going to a evo.
500whp on straight 93 octane on 27psi, full interior/factory car , stock block, lowww 11s high 10s car with 125+ traps, way more reliable and "cheaper"then my s4's

One of the reasons I switched from my Mustang Cobra to my S4 was because I wanted something nice to drive around every day. The Cobra was super fast for relatively not that much money, but having a conversation in that car, or doing anything else except going fast, was pretty difficult. The same goes for hopped up WRXs and EVOs.. however, I feel like it is possible to build a S4 with the best of both worlds. Yes, it'll cost more money, but in the end, you've got a multi-dimensional car.

X5 4.4L = run far away. I have one. I love the way it handles (for an SUV) and the space, comfort, and overall luxury of it are uncompromisable. However, and that's a HUGE HOWEVER, the maintenance and issues we have with it are far more than the s4. While it does have a timing chain instead of a belt, the timing chain guide rails are made of a really cheap plastic and are known to fail on a regular basis. Preventative maintenance on that is either DIY for ~$1k in parts/tools and 20hrs labor or pay ~$3-4k. the VANOS units are also known to rattle/fail. While, they aren't going to do any damage to the engine if failed, the noise it just annoying. The transmission is known to slip/act wierd randomly. The 4.4L all came with the air ride suspension that is known to fail, which is about $1000-1500 in parts alone. To switch to a coil suspension can be done, but there is no way to delete the code from the software. and it gets shit gas mileage.
If I were to recommend an X5, it would be the 3.0L inline 6. While that engine has it's own issues, it can be made bullet proof for much cheaper (Dr. VANOS, sensors, and coolant system maintenance). There are many out there without the air bag suspension. They get better gas mileage (about 23 mpg hwy). And you can still run some big ass 20" x 11.5" wheels in the back.

Rocket, thanks so much for the info on the 4.4 X5. Will def stay away from it. Right now I'm fixing up the random shit wrong with the S4 so who knows.. maybe I'll keep it but its just costing me $$ on a constant basis!
I'm completely stock too and the car just doesn't feel right. I think I'm going to change the plugs again.

I myself don't mind the WRX or Evo, but wouldn't want to drive one every day. The biggest thing they lack is a decent interior, and to me that's a huge deal breaker. That one thing pretty much rules out every Japanese or American vehicle because it seems like only European car companies give a damn about interior quality. If I were to have to get another manual, AWD, and reasonably quick car I'd either shoot for an allroad or a S60R/V70R.

C5 4.2 hands down. Widebody is amazing in person. Only weak point is the tranny which you can swap for an o1e anyways. Hell, a few 6mt c5 4.2's have been popping up for sale recently too.

I bought a Cherokee SRT8....
Certainly a lot more expensive than a b5 s4. But I like it, it's quick, parts are relitively cheap, and it's bigger.
I'm happy. It's been 2 years now...
Edit; needed pics... And its the fastest suv you can buy (well unless you wanna drop 60+k on a new srt8..)

Both have widebody, s6 came in avant only tho in the states. And will run you about 12k vs 6-8k for a c5 a6 4.2.
edit* s6 also has the 340hp v8 vs the 300hp c5 a6, also s6 has the carbon fiber int. and what not.

The SRT8 Cherokees are F'kin sick and def considered purchasing one. Again, I don't really have like 25 -30k to drop though so it's a bit out of my range lol.

TBSS is much slower than the jeep, stock on stock it's like taking candy from a baby.. But the LS motors like mods, but then again so does the 6.1L in the jeep (although the transmission doesn't particularly like it... )

Nope, srt8 is quicker than a turbo S cayenne I've seen it with my own eyes thru my rear view and if you must go there I'm sure the NEW 6.4L powered srt8 is faster than a brand new cayenne turbo.
Only complaint I have is that all of the above are auto's..I really would love to ditch the awd, and toss a t56 6 speed out of the challenger in there! Would be fun, and would eliminate the trans headache when it's really modified
Mines been stock, and only had two issues over the two years of ownership.. Valve cover and a gasket had to be replaced (under warranty) and the theromstat stuck shut a couple months ago and split the upper radiator hose.. ~280$ (t stat was 20$ housing was 50$, hose was 110$) so coming from a stage 3+ b5 it's been a breeze!!

TBSS run high 13's and low 14's which is about the same as an SRT8 cherokee so i wouldnt say its taking candy from a baby. mod for mod i would have my money on the LS2 as well but this is all bench racing, i own neither vehicle.
