Sad day :( timing belt broke......

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well today after doing some further diagnosis on my car, It's official my T belt is no good. The car was driving perfectly fine and I stopped to have some lunch. When I came outside the car would just turn over and not start?? I thought it was the fuel pump or CPS or CTS but I was wrong. I loosened the passenger side top bolt of the timing cover and had a friend turn the engine over and the T belt is not turning :(

What are the chances of me having bent some valves? Im hoping I didn't bend any and I can just throw on a new T belt tensioner wp etc etc and be on my merry way.... After all the car was not running when the belt quit?

Any input is greatly appreciated. What do you guys think I should do?

    Thanks

and the last pic I took of her when she was still running

Well every time you crank it you are making the pistons hit the valves so try to avoid that. I hate to be negative nancy here but I think you might have to send that head to get new valves. Sorry :(

Poor installation or shoddy parts possibly.

I did talk to the PO he told me that it just had the Tbelt changed when I originally looked at the car. When I talked to him today he said it was done in Feb 2010 by him and a friend..... What the FRENCH TOAST!! I will be completely taking the front of the car apart tomorrow and see what really caused the belt to stop turning. I was originally mad it might be the fuel pump, now im wishing it would have been the fuel pump lol

not to be negative, but that's why I stay away from b5 S4's..... they 10+ years old and knowing the maintnence history is near impossible. Not to mention, the car itself was one of Audi's most unreliable cars every built.

-However, if you can find the money I am with everyone else. Build this car up & go stage 3!

Yeah, I'm sorry you got it and it turned into a big repair bill, but I have to tell you thanks. You opened my eyes to the hazards of buying one of these without strict records / pre-purchase inspection. Did you have a PPI done?

I'm starting to think these fall under the E30 category where if the TB hasn't been CONFIRMED done, then do it before you drive it. :(

I doubt a PPI would have found an issue unless the belt was really old/cracked.

I bought mine with a receipt for a tb/wp job done only 2 months before I bought it. 4 months later the wp shit the bed and Gabe at BlueWater said all the parts looked like original components, def not ones that were changed only a few months earlier. PO of my car got shafted by his shop. I let him know not toake any other cars there but it didn't change the fact I had to pay for something i thought was done. It's now currently at BW for head work and new turbos after the cam chain tensioner broke back at the end of Febraury. $3k to get it fixed, another $3k to take care of stuff while the engine is out. These mother******s are def not for the faint of heart or light in the wallet. Even if I diy'd everything I'd be out about $4k in just parts, added to fact that it would take me probably 4 times linger to do the work myself.

The old saying is: Audis (especially B5 S4s) are like strippers, they only work when you throw money at them.

Good luck V8EATER, hope you get your sorted faster than it has been for mine.

The belt was really old and I wish I would have looked at it. I picked up a new engine today and am
Going to do a bunch of maintenance on it before it goes in. T belt, water pump, new tensioners and all that stuff. I'll also replace the valve cover gaskets and anything else you guys may recommend. Engine I bought has 100k and looks pretty good so far.

    Thanks for the support fellas....
