Samll Issue...Might be nothing at all.

For the past few weeks or so and today it seemed the worse...Every time I turn the key and start my car it kicks over but when i turn it back to it's normal position it dies. Today it took me about 6 tries before it would stay running. I thought maybe it was the fuel pump but I hear it turning on. This may just be something stupid but I never had this issue before really...it's fine when the car is warm but when its cold it seems to not want to stay running. Any thoughts?

when's the last time you've changed your fuel filter?

Might be the Crank Position Sensor, at least that 's what it was when I had those symptoms. Has your car shut off at a stoplight, by chance?...Also on a stretch, it might be the actual key ignition being faulty as well, that issue has cropped up a few times on this board.

I look into those things...if it gets worse do you think it will throw a code?

It will eventually, but usually you can see it acting weird by streaming RPMs with vagcom its probably wise to take care of it before it gets that bad so you don't get stranded. If it just plain shuts off, then I would think its either crank pos sensor or ignition switch related, but if it sputters and gradually dies I would suspect a fuel(filter) issue.

When I had my first coil pack issue I hooked my car up to the obd2 reader at our shop. We are a Body Shop so we really don't do mechanic work but we have a Matco Obd2 reader on hand. It stated that there was an old code in there and it read crank position sensor so maybe its been done before. I don't think its the fuel filter. I guess ill look around for a crank position sensor diy.

That'll stream data right? Or is it just a code reader? You'll usually see the RPMs jump around a bit as you raise the revs.

I'm looking at an old thread now and it says something about the cam position sensor. It says it wont crank if the crank postion sensor is bad but mine is cranking just wont stay running. Would this narrow it down to the cam position sensor?

It'll crank, but it won't keep the fuel pump running unless it gets a signal from the CPS.

Yeah it will stream data. So is it safe to say since I hear the fuel pump going on and it will start most of the time after 5 or 6 cranks that it is a bad cam position sensor?

Crank position, Cam position...I think its the same sensor, regardless, start there first. You might get lucky.

^^ No no. They're very different. With different symptoms when they go bad.

I think YOU are talking about the "Cam Chain Tensioner" NOT the (cam position or crank position) sensor!

I stand corrected Mr. Waite...I apologize. Well played sir!

But check your "crank position sensor", I believe thats the cause.
