Turbo gone, timing belt slipping, or something else?

    I have a 2004 Audi A3 1.9tdi. I realised a couple of weeks ago that it's 10,000 miles overdue for a timing belt change

I was driving today and when joined a motorway I accelerated and there was a sudden loud whining noise, like a dentist's drill, and I had a loss of power.

The noise happens on any acceleration, even the lightest touch of the pedal, and the power is low.

The fact that the noise happens with any acceleration would lead me to believe that it's not the turbo and is more likely related to the timing belt. However, the car is still driving so I'm not sure if it's something else entirely.

Any ideas what would cause this?

Sure sounds like a bad turbo to me. Consistent with the noise and power loss.
