Lido's single turbo S4

So here goes nothing, starting a build thread about my single turbo S4 as most of my parts are here and I found a local shop that is willing to do all fabrication work for great prices. Big thanks goes out to Max and all of the guys at 034, Big 3 Racing, and everyone that has helped me. Hopefully the remote tuning will be provided from Josh at Jfonz tuning. For right now, I am on a budget so will probably will be sticking to a mild setup and aiming for about 475hp or so. The car is mostly gutted (minus the interior), and I hope to run mid to high 11s with it in the 1/4 mile.
Yes all of the work is being done on jack stands, unfortunately I don't have the luxury of lift at my new shop.
Here are some of the parts:

Stock 2.7T short block
2.8 big port heads
RS4 intake manifold and throttle body
034 Phenolic intake manifold spacer
034 exhaust flanges to bolt up to the 2.8 exhaust manifolds
2.8 exhaust manifolds with custom up-pipe
Turbosmart comp gate
Precision 6262 JB turbo with .82 V-band inlet flange
700 hp ETS intercooler which uses a Garrett core (modified to 3" outlet and 2.5" inlet)
034 steel flywheel
Spec stage 5 clutch
034 fuel rails, with 034 bosch 044 drop in fuel pump
72# Bosch injectors
034 95mm MASS housing with Hitachi sensor
034 solid engine and transmission mount
Apikol diff mount with race bushings
JHM shifter package
Adam's Rotors with Hawk HPS pads
Enkei RPF01 wheels with Dunlop Direzza Star Spec tires (look very sticky)

Lol, will not. That's why I haven't posted anything. I wanted to make sure everything is accounted for, I am not the one to start a car project and not finish it.

Sweet! Curious though, why you chose to build $3k heads before throwing in rods to get higher power? Seems like stock heads on a beefed up bottom end would allow you a lot more power in the mean time, and when you wanted to upgrade the heads, you wouldn't necessarily have to pull your motor.

Looks like it's going to be awesome either way though!

Ah, I misread "springs" as fully built 2.8 heads, and I thought you were paying normal prices for the heads and labor. Good deal.

Your doing it wrong

Stay stock springs if you stay on stock valves, you will be ok to rev at 7500 without problems.

Even stock 2.8 valves are fine if they are in great condition.


Stock valves on supertech spring will cost you and engine... Trust me...

The 2.8 Stock heads are tested to be ok at more than 30 psi on pump gas on a single setup !

Max, this was inspired by your car and thank you for all of your help. Guruman, that is great to hear. I may just stick with the stock 2.8 heads then and only rev to 7500. I doubt I will be seeing more than 25 PSI on pump gas.

Stock valvetrain is perfectly fine at 7500 redline.

no problem at all either on that psi area...


Only problem is that most of the time, used 2.8 heads have some pretty high mileage on them, so the condition of these heads is the problem.


Putting high strenght springs on stock oem valve is a time bomb by itself. I did it, cost me 6 forged pistons and 1 turbo

I would rather put 12 stainless exhaust valves than spring, if buget was an obstacle...

Guruman, the heads lseem to be in decent condition, but I will them checked and cleaned by the machine shop and throw at least some valve guide seals. I had the same turbo on my 1.8T Audi 90 and loved it, although the car was not street friendly as lag was an issue. Hopefully won't be an issue with the 2.7.
ukuRish, I am probably going to use the stock 2.7T bottom end right now as I am trying to keep this project on a budget.

Lol we will see, I am really trying to keep this on a budget to see how the car will perform, how reliable it will, how drive-able and street friendly it is. If I like what I see, I will continue to a full build and maybe upgrade to a ball bearing 6765 for even more fun.

Should be picking up the finished up-pipe tomorrow hopefully. Weather has been crappy up here in Cleveland and hasn't allowed for any work on the S4. The gf's S4 has been stealing all of my attention.

how did you plan on running the wiring harness? since it runs right behind the motor, and now theres all that extra heat.. are you wrapping it in "flameproof" or whatever its called. or are you just wrapping all the piping and a turbo blanket?

Got the up-pipe yesterday and test fitted everything. I had to cut the firewall, but everything came out great.

I plan on going through the wire harness and cutting out a lot of crap that I am not using, such as evap, secondary 02's, EGT, etc. I don't have a specific route in mind, but will definitely use the flameproof material.

I was planning on keeping the firewall, but since the up-pipe was made without the car being there, it ended up interfering with it, and there was definitely no room for down-pipe. Plus, I it should keep things a bit cooler under the hood. Things aren't looking as promising as they were in the beginning, so I may just stick with the 2.7 heads instead of the 2.8s for right now.

I'm not sure on this but if your talking about 475WHP and the idea of moving the power curve to the right(upper rpm's) your moving the torque to the right also? with a spec 5 clutch and your gonna drop the clutch at what rpm? regardless though, I think your moving torque and HP to the upper rpm's and 475WHP is PROBABLY going to kill the oem rods either way? All that work and risking the rods I dunno about that. perhaps you can elaborate on how you can get to 475WHP and not strain the oem rods?

People run 475 WHP on OEM rods all the time. The cutoff is more around 500whp, and really its a crazy sharp early torque spike that does it, which I don't imagine this will have.

When i build my engine my OEM rods was bend little , that time my car made near 400Whp and 430TQ so it's his decision !
