oh ya i'm definitely over my head but i always was lol and knew so... nothing changed there. but in the end i don't really care about how much it costs, i was just excited to get it on and now i know i'm going to have to wait longer. nbd but def gonna just save up and not really think about this until after the semester's over...
and Andrew i didn't say anything bad about metrick...? i agreed with you that he said he was worried i'd blow up the car which is a very legitimate concern. and i agree i should leave the tranny and motor work to professionals haha; definitely not arguing there.
buying a new block would probably be as expensive anyway after i bought the tools, right?
anyway just gonna chill on this whole thing until i get the parts at least. then I'll deal with the install. Still waiting on a call back from Apikol.

Damn, shit's crazy expensive! Pm Vizi, he's gone through this sort of shit. He would give you an honest answer as to what he has paid for labors.
Imo, seeing that Metric's quote for the whole install is still under 3zero3's price for just rods, I would take advantage of that. Imo, the more work a pro shop does, the better, because they incur more responsibility for what happens. Look at poor Glissoar, he would literally be fucked if he did any if the work himself.
It makes me sad that 3zero3's price is outrageous, but it is what it is. Good luck!

good point JR. I guess my concern is, if i wasn't doing rods I could have done it with the help of y'all in a friend's garage. its a significant part of the dream for me... so i'm gonna try to keep heading towards that goal, while saving up money if comes down to it and that's not an option, ya know? I understand we might fuck up my car... but going slow and being careful i think a lot of people could do a lot to their cars.
but yeah glisoar's experience definitely shook me a little, but at the same time i'm doing rods so it should be more chill? eh? eh? haha... well I can pray.
anyway money is worthless if you don't spend it... so here's to being patient and waiting a little longer, spending a little more, and doing things the right way the first time
Operator is checking from a buddy who is a VW tech what a reasonable quote/hours estimate should be. I am doing the same from another friend who is also a vw tech... if this is how much it costs then it is what it is and i'll pay to play haha. but if i can get a more reasonable offer on just the install of the rods (motor in/out i'll do either) i'll take it and we can do the rest of the work ourselves at Martin's

talked to RAI today and they said to remove the motor from the car, install the rods, and put it back should be 16 hours of labor and i should be looking for something around that range. anything above 20 is a ripoff and 3zero3 is straight trying to bend me over (my words and analysis of the situation lol)
back in business! SCR also offered 1200 for dropping off the motor by itself. that seems more in line with what RAI has assessed...
oh and my vw tech buddy Tim said it should be about 15-20 hours of labor

nope not necessary, you can drop the subframe and hoist the motor up to do it. but at that point... might as well take it out right lol.
RAI is making some pretty competitive bids for the rods install haha... Ray really wants me to bring him the car so he can dyno tune as well... since i will be going back anyway sometime this summer it sounds like this might be the winning ticket

Not to be a naysayer.... But I'm gonna be a naysayer. Maybe this would be the best idea. I build my bike last summer and after the fact, aside from regretting the build because of the outrageous price tag to build a Ducati, It was a huge pain in the ass. I actually had them come get the bike and re-check everything after I put the motor back in.
If you want peace of mind you might want to work a little more and sell a few more HJ's on the side and have them do it this summer. I'm all about working on cars and you know I'll help as much as I can but it might be easiest and safest to have them do it all. Last thing you want to have after dropping all this coin on the build is to have something either go, or have that doubt that something is about to go wrong.
Ok I'll take my tampon out now.

haha nah mike, you're absolutely right. and with how paranoid i am on a literally constant basis, i think the peace of mind might outweigh the "fun" i'm gonna have putting it in. save up and get a timing belt kit, w/m, and then take it back to VA and let ray dyno tune it...
on a different note, they got a gt2867 on a b6 1.8 and pushed 35 psi at mid 300s, awhp... fun times! Ray thinks the 2.0 has a huge advantage over the 1.8 and that he can push the car a lot farther... haha i dunno. considering waiting even longer and upgrading pistons as well... just to make the engine a little more bulletproof. labor is basically the same.

If I were you, I would take it to RAI, since you'll be out that way anyway. Also, I would do pistons too, since the labor on that is basically free at this point. You know you would build it all, and run like 25 psi, and they would tell you if you would have done pistons, you could be running 35 psi. Or something like that.

oh by the way I called my guy today about installing rods/pistons. He told me it wasn't necessary to pull the motor completely, just having it suspended was probably enough. He quoted me about 16.5 hours so far, which totals about $1800 before tax. He also told me while they have everything apart they will clean up the carbon, install injectors and turbo at no extra cost. If everything comes out as planned i should be looking at about $2k. :D

SCR did my subaru stage 3 build.... a little overpriced yes, but they were 5 miles away from me. Service was excellent, and the car ran like OEM..... in some cases, the extra money is worth it
-SCR is also building/boring a complete motor for my friends E36 M3 race car....

SCR is definitely in the running; only heard the best of them and its a good price although not the best i will admit. they have never done internals on a 2.0T though... which is of concern to me. G&G will have done AudiTFSI3o3's build so that seems like a really good option right now and the best price if I can get the same deal AudiTFSI3o3 did.
Apikol came out of left field got an email this morning ... with a SIGNIFICANTLY better price than even RAI has offered... I asked for a quote if i was to drop the whole car off, carbon scrub, etc. so as to get a comparison between G&G, RAI, and Apikol. not trying to be a dick, but if i'm going to pay a shop I would like it to be RAI so i'm going to try and bid them down to where Apikol/G&G are at.

i mean i want to... looks like Apikol and G&G might be considerably (20%) cheaper than RAI... but i will try to get them to barter a little i am brown after all

Well like I said, "IF" you're going anyway, then wait. If 51% of the reason you may make the trip is for the install, then you ahve to factor in the cost of the trip into the install price. If the 51% is to see mom and pops, regardless of the BT, then take it to RAI.
-
Senior Member
Four Rings
cost isn't really a factor; plane tickets are more expensive anyway, or a little less / the same if i get a hotel room for the night while driving. its more the time of driving back and forth... but yes I wanted to take my car back to DC no matter what this summer, to see how it does at sea level and because it hasn't been home in a while and I could potentially get my emissions "done" (faked) lol...
-
Senior Member

I was just mentioning cost, to fairly compare quotes. i.e. If you were mainly going for the build, then the say $700 in travel expenses should be added onto RAI's quote. Apikol = $2,000 (random #) RAI = $1700 but add $700 travel expenses and then it's $2400. But since you said you plan on going regardless of BT then my point is moot, and you should take it to RAI so the BT can see it's old friends

yup. apikol gave me a solid quote for dropping off the block. so lets see what they quote me for the whole job... then i'll take the G&G and Apikol #s to ray and see if we can work out a deal
on another note, decided i was going to wait until i buy w/m as well. i'll talk to ray about which kit he thinks i should get, but they're having a sale right now on snow so probably go with that. the ebc will be controlling the spray anyway so idk if it even really matters which w/m setup i go with... was gonna order 034M street density motor mounts and pick up an adjustment bracket thingy from the dealership but didn't get around to it today... got a 4 hr interview in the AM and then class. not really interested in the job but its good to get practice ya know. still shopping for a new internship for the summer, this just isn't the place i'm looking for. i'll def be ordering the mounts and picking up the bracket tomorrow after class

You should totally get a dual nozzle setup for your meth. I would love to see you run 100 oct full time, and it would be best to have it spraying before the fmic, and right into the throttle body.
