(drumnjuny's) - GTX2867R Big Turbo Build
Whatup! My name’s Arjun… the proud owner of a 2007 Ibis B7 A4 2.0T FSI S-Line Quattro 6MT. Welcome to my build thread! ive wanted to say that forever, haha! I remember reading VRT gli builds on the vortex when I was 15, drooling all over my keyboard… and now its finally my turn.
Stock stuff:
RNS-E
Bose Audio
S-line package
32% tint (measured by the 5-0 haha)
Brushed aluminum trim
Some early pictures:

(that’s my roommate)
Bought the car in August 2010, it was originally purchased in late August of 2007 so I got the car with 3 years 47,000 miles on it. Came with brand new pilot sport plus a/s, which was nice!
August 2010
Two weeks after I got it I got a carbonio intake, custom high flow cat, APR R1 diverter valve, APR catback, and APR stage 1 installed. Totally changed my opinion of the car, and made me realize how much I needed suspension (originally I thought that my s-line suspension was sufficient). My stock dv was failing as well so I’m sure the R1 helped me hold boost. Also got an escort 9500ix.
September 2010
Debadged the rear end except for the rings. Love the clean look in the back!!
February 2011
Put a 034 Motorsports turbo inlet hose in. sounds awesome, feels way more sturdy. Not sure about gains though, lol.
Also got an rs4 style grill…
April 2011
Bit the bullet on suspension, brake, and wheel upgrades. Bought OZ Ultraleggeras new from tire rack. Recently sold these to help pay for the kit, gonna be rocking stockers for a bit. To be honest I quite like how they look! Much less aggressive, I have fallen out of love with the gaudy, black OZs… 18x8 et35 5x112
May 2011
Finally get my Stasis (Koni) street sport coilovers, stop tech rotors, pads, and ss braided brake lines in the car. Painted my calipers flat black while they were out. Also did the vag-com mods to get the rtw headlight settings and key fob window control and seatbelt chime. Not happy with my stoptech purchase… going for EBC Redstuff soon I think.
June 2011
Got the mod bug again… Installed RS4 Rear Sway Bar
Painted the roof and rear valence black!! I think it turned out quite well. Also had front and rear bumpers resprayed b/c of rock chips. I had previously painted all four reflectors, but my reflectors were repainted here and it looked a lot more even than my paint job…
July 2011
JHM short shifter. top three mods of all time… if you don’t have it, check out someone in your area who does and see if u can drive their car. will never own a car without a solid throw shifter again, the difference is shocking. Also installed apr stage 2 (test pipe file) to get rid of the CEL, something I should have done a long time ago.
December 2011
034 motorsport snub mount, eurocode 2.5” test pipe, and adams front rotors (warped my stop tech ones pretty fast) in the car. Much happier with how the car sounds now, even though it is only for a little while!
Podi boost gauge also installed… I like it but it has to go… whoever guesses why can have first dibs on it, only been used for a few months.
Clear cornered my headlights and painted the housings black… was very unsure about this for a while but I’m really happy with how it turned out! Also fucked with my headlight switch to have my fogs on without the projectors.
February 2011
After a LOT of deliberating and talking to Ray @ RAI (mad props to their customer service! A++, and trust me I don’t say this lightly… this is the one area where I am very demanding, and the RAI crew has continued to impress me over and over again. PM if you want examples) … build components ordered!! been a dream to me, I can't wait to start the install.
What’s on the car right now…
Apr stage 2 tune
JHM Short shifter
APR R1 Diverter valve
APR downpipe and catback
Eurocode test pipe
034Motorsport turbo inlet hose
034Motorsport snub mount
Carbonio intake
Stasis/Koni Street Sport Coils
RS4 rear sway bar
Adams/Stoptech rotors
Stoptech pads
Stainless steel brake lines
Podi boost gauge
Rs4 grill
HID Fogs 4300k
Sitting on blizzak ws-70s… need tires for the summer
What is on the way…
RAI GTX Kit
- GTX2867R w/ .63 A/R turbine
- Exhaust manifold
- 3” test pipe
- 3” intake
- Synapse Synchronic Diverter Valve
- RAI Catch Can
- FMIC Pressure pipe
- Stainless steel oil lines
- S3 Injectors
- Maestro
RAI FMIC
HPFPUpgrade stage 2 hpfp
HPFPUpgrade 155 bar prv
Eurodyne boost manager +
Integrated engineering rods and install kit
What needs to be bought/done before the turbo goes on…
Motor mounts
Passenger side bumper adjustment bracket
Install rods
Cam follower
BG Cleaning, or at least inspection
What is immediately following the kit:
Clutch & flywheel upgrade (not sure what direction I’m going yet)
Water/Meth kit
What would make my car “finished” (an ever-growing list, of course):
Vinyl my window and interior trim
LED plate lights
10" shallow mount + amp (to replace bose 8", going in stock location)
Add hex mesh to my fog grills
Fix my glovebox
Paint filler plate gloss black
Hard-wire radar detector, with a funk button
Strip and retint car with ceramic 35%
Upgrade to 2010 RNS-E
Adjustable control arms + Thor skid plate + go lower
Upgrade coilovers to ohlins SL (fell in love ever since riding in a b7s4 with them)
Get my dream wheels (not sure what they are yet, but plenty of time here)
BBK
Make the top half of my interior match the bottom half (make it black. Probably never going to do this… I just hate how the bottom half is black and the top is white lol)
Last thing we need to discuss, if I’m not mistaken. Numbers!!! I have to preface this with I don’t really care about numbers… I am merely looking to make the car more fun and competitive, I will definitely be tracking it… as I have more money and/or a second vehicle I will be tracking it more and more often. That being said, RAI pushed 419awhp @44psi out of a GTX30 on a 1.8… yup these turbos like to flow at really high pressures! so 350-400 range is what I am expecting (trying to keep it conservative so as not to be disappointed when I do eventually dyno it lol). Ray at RAI said that he thinks we could potentially push the turbo to 460awhp, but I am more concerned about reliability as this is my only vehicle and a huge investment, I am going to keep the tune relatively conservative to start with. Ray said he will teach me how to use maestro… I consider myself a fast learner so that will be very nice if I move to an area where they sell 93 octane or to sea level… and when I get a second vehicle I will tune the car more aggressively.

Looks to be a sick build! One modification recommended, don't waste money on the BG cleaning and follow Drak's method. Cheaper, and more importantly, it works!! Once you get in there to clean it you will understand why BG doesn't work (that stuff is like 5 mm thick).

Thanks!! I think i will be splitting a boroscope with people in the denver area, or having a shop inspect just to see what the buildup is like in there. most people have laughed at me for considering doing this at all, as the car only has 65k on the clock... but i'm looking to do it once and do it right so I might end up just opening it up myself. at the very least I will be splitting a boroscope or having a shop check it out as its about $50 either way, and for peace of mind that's cents on the dollar to me

I will be calling RAI first thing on Monday to get an update on when the kit is showing up, and hopefully procuring some pictures of progress on the kit, as a lot of the components still need to be made. their fabbing shop is backed up right now, so it might be a few weeks before parts start coming in. i need time to save up for some more of the stuff i need and some buffer cash in case things don't go super smoothly (lets be honest how often do they go smoothly lol?)...

dang! that's motivation haha for sure... well i will be paying a shop to install the rods, they should be able to peek and let me know, right? i'm not a mechanic by any means, so i am unsure lol but i feel like it would be pretty easy to tell with the internals out?

looks like i'm bailing on my trip to montana, mainly to get this show on the road! but also because i had the best day of the season riding last week, and my buddy i'd be staying with could only get one day next weekend off from work
RAI needs another week to finish up the fab work, should be shipped next monday... parts will be here in two weeks!!!
also took the car to a carwash today.... first time its not been cleaned by my own hands... pretty impressed with the brushless wash, more happy about my interior being vacuumed and my underbody being washed. obviously its not even close to as clean as a proper wash but i have zero time nowadays so whatever. here's a glory shot:

Definitely interested to see where this build goes. I'm on the fence between gtx28 and gtx30

i suggest calling RAI and talking to ray about the two options (he knows what's up with the GTX turbos). they are very very different... and the gtx30 was just extreme overkill for me. if u've seen the dyno for the 1.8 they have, the torque curve is.... intense to say the least. since peak power/numbers really aren't of any concern to me, i opted to go with the gtx28... i'm more worried about spool so RAI is gonna throw the .63 A/R turbine in in the 2867R for what i hope will be a perfect balance of spool and peak power for me
not gonna lie i do find myself wondering how much i would be able to notice between a 2863R and a 2867R, but after talking to ray for like an hour we agreed upon the 67R so that in case i do want to turn up the peak power i could swap the turbine for a .82 a/r and see where that takes me.

Can you share this said torque curve?? ;-) How does the spin up and minimum rpm for boost compare to the KOR?

these are definitely, definitely BAT applications. especially the GTX3076 on this 1.8.... spool on the KOR should be much faster

For the record that was a .82 GTX3071R on an otherwise bone stock 1.8L (power-wise)

my mistake, i thought it was a 3076. and i forgot to mention it was bone stock!!! it has the IE drop in rods though, right?

because of the 44psi of boost it was pushing i believe it had rods as well. clint can clear it up

i think i got a stage 1 stoptech kit... rotors lines + pads? for some reason ever since i got the pads my rotors have been warping (or rather pad deposit on the rotors?). no matter how easy i go on the brakes for 500 miles after turning rotors or buying new ones, it happens again. i'm thinking it is the pads that are the problem, so i'm looking to swap em. next time i turn my AR rotors i'll be sure to get EBC Redstuff at the same time. looks like that's gonna be soon as well, just hit 1k miles since turning the rotors and scuffing the pads and starting to feel mild effects of "warping"... yet again (/suicide)
i am in love with the flat black color. it really matched my flat black wheels well, although I think because they are stock brakes the less attention they grab the better which was my motivation for not hitting them with a clear coat. if i ever get a BBK i will go gloss and show em off
and thanks for the support y'all... i will be sure to post a ton of pics when i get the kit in the next two weeks

What kind of numbers are you looking to hit with your GTX2867 .63?
-
Senior Member
Four Rings
honestly, just looking to make the car feel fast rather than worry about numbers or where it is... but i'm realistically looking at anwhere in the 350-400 range. not looking for more than that, though i'm sure I could push the turbo farther, and the tiny turbine isn't going to help peak power. reliability and DDbility are my focus as this is my only vehicle
i'm sure no matter what RAI will deliver a monster of a car

Sounds great. I am looking to switch to a turbo like this, or a CT2-4952.

i'm gonna do my best to keep it as reserved as possible. if i ever in the future upgrade valves/springs i could push it further but that assumes having a second vehicle as well

I love your outlook on the build, at the end of the day it's not about a number. I know you will enjoy the car once it's done :-)

thanks haha and yup... it probably comes off as feigned to some people... but i am honestly not worried about numbers. i'm not even willing to throw down the $ to dyno my car at stage 2 before going BT lmao i'm looking to have a fast car haha, which no matter what the number is i will feel thrilled with the improvement

while stage 2 seems sluggish, it still seems quick/nimble sometimes when i get on it. so i can't wait for a gtx on there!! the anxiety is killing me, for real lol

are you going to build a separate block or deal with the down time? Last time I talked to Apikol they had a spare block laying around.

sorry drak no idea.
right now, looks like RAI is gonna do all the engine building work, timing belt, mounting and tune. they've promised full support which is... legit. and having everything come from one shop is going to be nice.
i'm excited to basically have a fresh, built head, very strong engine ready for the track and some high boost haha. car threw a P0299 today "turbocharger underboost"... hottest its been in a bit i'd say and i was kinda rompin on it a little. boost gauge reads 21 spike though so idk. cleared the code and it hasn't come back yet so its straight it? new turbo in a couple months so, i guess no need to worry really lol...

going to deal with downtime. worked out okay; i'm switching jobs... going from a corporate position with 1100 people in my building and 50k employees worldwide to a start up here in boulder with 6 employees. they're a lot more relaxed about timing in general, and in my contract (only lasts till december when I get my bachelors, when i'll be applying places for long term positions) I negotiated for three weeks of time to go spend time with my family during the summer (this is my last "summer," if you will).
luckily my family happens to live an hour from RAI lol.

You driving out solo? And is RAI just going to keep all the parts (or at least the ones you've yet to recieve). Would be odd for them to send them to you just so you can drive them back.
