Question Special tool needed to replace headlight

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I recently took my 2006 A4 to Pepboys to have the headlights changed. They got into the car and called to tell me they were not able to change the bulb because they were unable to disconnect the existing bulb from the headlight. I was told once the mechanic checked there was a special tool needed to remove the bulb that only dealers can get. He did mention he had changed bulbs before on A4's but had never seen this. Does anyone know what he might be talking about, or was he mistaken. I would prefer not to have to go to the dealer to have this done, as they will undoubtedly be much higher in cost. Any help would be appreciated.

Might want to say if they are halogens or xenons...if they are halogens they just pull straight out. I'd imagine the xenons are similar, but I'm not sure.

Which headlights do you have, halogen or bixenon? It's hard (almost impossible) to change bulbs without removing the front bumper and pulling the headlight housings out, and even then it can be a pain in the ass to get the bulbs out. It's possible though, I've done and many others here have well.

They are halogen. When I went to the shop it looked like they were trying to go in from behind the housing. Removing the air filter and what not.

There is no special tool needed. All you need to do is remove the air filter housing and that one pulls straight out, the other one you shouldn't need extra room.

They just looked up that they had to take the whole bumper off to change a headlight and then gave you that as an excuse.

    Remove air box passenger side
Move power steering reservoir on the other side
Takes about 10 min to do both

Already been posted, but small hands are the only special tool needed to change the halogen headlight bulbs. You don't even need to remove the airbox, or move the power steering reservoir.

But more importantly, this. Dude, it's a lightbulb. You don't call a contractor to your house to replace a burnt out bulb in your kitchen do you?

No... but what if you had to remove your kitchen cabinets to change the bulb... most people would call a handyman.

I try to do as much work as I can myself. I haven't yet started tinkering with my A4, but will.

This may be true, but I'd argue that most people on this forum are not your average car (or home) owner. I for one, would remove my own kitchen cabinets.

Yeah... Just messing with you. I have yet to remove my bumper, I dont like that I would have to to change my xenon bulbs. I still have to check out my cam follower... A few issues I have with the B7...

Our bulbs have a glass dome cover over them which must be unscrewed by hand I swear some of these home builders do this crap on purpose.

I tried putting this rinky dink ladder that was shaking more than a girl in a Juvenile "back that ass up" video up against a wall...but that didnt work out very well. Got up 15-20ft and called it a day hahaha. (ended up calling a friend who does Hvac-R on commercial buildings) His monkey ass walked straight up, swapped the bulb and everything and came down in less than 2 minutes.

A 30 foot wooden ladder has to be the scariest thing I've ever been on. When I was with office servies for ann taylor this summer we had to change bulbs in the lobby and I was on the very tip top of that ladder and then had to lean and reach over to get at some of them. I want to say the ladder swayed at foot ether way never again.
