ok so less than 2000 miles ago i had all the timing chain stuff replaced becuase the car was misfirin really bad and multiple guides were broken yadda yadda yadda. point is i have been goin the whole time with absolutely no start up rattle. took the car up to the shop to have them change the oil and everything went smoothly. drove the car home. when i went to start it after it sat for an hour or so, it had a start up rattle. not loud but definitely there. im concerned about this. i dont know what oil the shop put in there after they finished the work but the oil i gave them to put in it the first time was motul 5w-40.
help me guys. im going to call them in the morning and see what they want me to do.
Thanks
Connor

That really is sad to hear, especially with all the labor and costs, not to mention frustration of not having a car, involved to replace timing compoenents. You said that you brought the oil to the shop, so i assume you brought them 10 quarts right?
Who did your timing belt service? it's possible that if something was not adjusted probably that it's showing up later, but that's a strecth though. I would take it back to the shop that did the oil and speak with the manager about this. If this is the same shop that did your timing belt service, they should warranty their work.

The only thing I can add is after my last oil change. I switched from M1 0w40 to the Motul X-cess when I first started the engine after the change I got the gnarliest chain rattle imaginable. It sounded like everything was dry. Not much help I know, just thought I would chime in. I'm on all original timing components and get the occasional .5 - 1 sec cold startup rattle.
What did you replace exactly? I had to deal with this type of issue before and most people only replace the guides because they are cracked and maybe a camshaft adjuster if they have faults for it. I only sold one of those jobs because I always said to replace all the guides, tensioners, chains, and camshaft adjusters so you don't have to go through that again. Plus looking at it from the shop's standpoint how do they know it isn't a tensioner making noise that wasn't replaced.

yeah i dont know i was thinking about having them change it again back to whatever kind they used and see if it goes away. they also told me to check oil level so ill do that when i get home. sadly i left it there :(
The shop manager is a friend of mine and just got done talking to him about it. he said to check oil level and we would go from there. and this is not the first time he or another tech in the shop has done this project so im not worried about stuff being wrong

Just curious, what shop was it that did this job and has done it previously. I know this is going to get more common with these cars getting older, but aside from Audi dealerships, shops that are really knowledgeable about the TC 4.2 seem to be very few and far between.

solomotorsports did it. check them out. good bunch of guys. tell Boris that Connor sent you
These cars have noisy valvetrains & injectors. Are you certain it's not the normal operating sound? The chain rattle is like marbles-in-a-can...very distinct.
Saw your other thread on this. So what's the story? Are you still having problems or worried about issues after the timing chain service?
the other thread is a summary of symptoms and events leading up to me getting the service done. after my first oil change...like the original post says, i had chain rattle when i did not have any. its gone now. turns out oil was a little on the low side
