just wondering... how hard is it / what does it entail exactly? I am not that mechanically inclined, and have minimal experience but am assuming the help of the AZ Denver community (booze, smoke, and food on me of course). With my tax refund and everything, I'd really like to get a GTX28 kit going, but if i'm gonna do it I definitely want to do the install myself (club cheetah has kindly offered me his couch and garage while the car is undrivable). I'm worried about downtime on my car, as I really can't afford more than like a week of borrowing my roommates' cars to go to work... IIRC someone's turbo in denver blew on their 1.8T and they did a BT swap in a weekend. That's my goal - tell me if i'm retarded! Having air tools at cheetah's should help things go smoothly.
I just wanna get some more info on this whole process, seeing as i know a little but not much about cars, i wanna weigh this into my options (bike, new car, or GTX28). Advice from seasoned vets would be super helpful... and I think me and cheetah will probably need help from the AZ community lol. i'm assuming the car won't drive on my stage 2 tune so once we put all the parts on i'll have to have it towed to 3zero3 for tuning?
Things I need to do:
Exhaust mani
turbo
downpipe
new DV
oil lines
new intake
catch can
injectors
HPFP (cam follower at the same time)
PRV (for peace of mind, even though i know i'm not gonna max it out)
FMIC
motor mounts
things that need to be done by a shop:
carbon cleaning
Future plans, in order:
transmission fluid change
clutch+flywheel (to happen later, when stock dies)
forged internals
BBK
price is about the same (i'm thinking at 100k miles, this car with everything i've done to it will be roughly worth 17.5k maybe 20 if i'm lucky):
- Golf R can be paid off with the money, but the extreme depreciation of a new car would offset this so in a few years car would probably be worth around 20 as well, plus quattro>haldex any day
- b8 S4 would take a while to be paid off, probably 3 years, at which point i'd have spent like 3 times more but will have a car probably worth 30-35k when paid off.
- ducati 848 would be paid in full (only bike i'm gonna buy, been riding r6s, ZX-6Rs and cbr600s for a long time and would only get a bike with practically track-ready brakes and suspension from factory), but i'm not sure i'm mature enough to own my own bike yet and it would be really rough on my wallet insurance-wise, making it less feasable. if insurance and death weren't factors, i'd probably already have one of these bad boys haha
adding the cost of modding the golf R or b8 s4 (lets be honest, no way they're gonna stay stock. short shifter, suspension, exhaust, intake and chip are the bare minimum), makes modding my already pretty modded car seem like way more fun (i'd love to be able say that we built my car in my buddy's garage on jack stands). I have 0 responsibilities right now to any other living things, pets children wife, they're coming in my rear view quick so I think now is the time to go stage 3, as i am probably only going to get less flexible when it comes to money, time and responsibilities!
I've always dreamed of building a stage 3 car, and i know if i don't do it now and on this car i probably won't do it at all
towing is 12.6 miles to 3zero3 from mike's house... seems pretty reasonable, i think i have 5 free miles towing with AAA so can't be too bad on that cost
Yeah you can probably drive on a stg2 tune. You 1.8/2.0 guys have it easy... Just pull the whole thing in a weekend and do it all including the clutch yourself. I'm gearing up to pull my 2.7 to replace my clutch. Come by and watch.
stg3- iy b5s4
slow mk2 gli
WTB (ONE)b5s4 rear vmaxx coilover& spanner tool (shot in the dark I know, USPS lost one of my rears in the mail) PM me!
WTB85mm MAF
mike, wanna lend a hand with my build? I need experienced people, haha...
lets start with the kit, after the tune and everything is done i'm gonna do clutch and BBK
and word, thanks, sounds like i'll be able to baby her over there... sweet
i was considering doing HPFP+FMIC at a different time, just to split it up so there's less downtime. but i'd really like to get it all done in a weekend. i just need the support of audizine folks haha!

You can't have a bike as your main method of transportation if you live in the mountains. Especially if you have a job, you are going to have to always be borrowing someones car when it snows or asking for rides to the mountain. I have yet to see a b7 with 100k mi sell for anything close to $15k. with 100k I would strip the car, sell it for around $11k-12k(granted you have 65k mi miles now and it will be atleast 2 or 3 years before you get close to 100k), part out and maybe come close to that $17k...
Not to criticize on the build, I look forward to you going stage 3 but I think you may want to look some more at the resale value of our cars at high mileage.
yeah i'm honestly gonna probably just keep this car forever as its my first car, especially after putting this much work into it lol. looks like i have some support from the denver crowd, i got some people to agree to help via texts lol... i'm excited!!
I would gladly do your clutch for you if you feel like venturing to Silverthorne to do it.. Just sayin.. Could do your bbk too..
Thanks! will definitely let you know, even though its pretty far from denver haha. i'm definitely going to leave the clutch/BBK for the summer though (or earlier on the clutch if it dies on me, but i think it should be fine with only 65k on it for a couple months of easing the turbo in anyway)

I would honestly do that the other way around. I would do the supporting mods like the HPFP and the FMIC first and then think about adding a bigger turbo.
You well want to have the HPFP, injectors, FMIC, before you add the turbo on or have everything ready for when you want to do this swap.
I don't see why it would take more than a weekend to do this if you worked on it from say early morning to late night. I have done many projects (jeep related) in a weekend that should take a half a week.
If you let me know when you want to do this I'll pitch in and help out. I am no audi guru for damn sure lol but, I am handy with a wrench, have more tools to add in, and love working on cars.

As others have said, you can't really go BT on a B7 with the stock HPFP. Just not going to work. So like your original thought, get it ALL done in one swoop. And then get the tune. I would suggest Eurodyne over the Uni tune. That way Ray can tweak the file for you. I still may go that route myself?!?
haha i actually meant doing the fmic+hpfp a couple weeks or the weekend before, i know I definitely need it for the BT lol, i promise i'm not that clueless! doing those a couple weeks before would probably reduce the overall time, but at the same time I kind of want to just take everything off and on once.
dave has been talking to be about having eurodyne tune it and ray from RAI tweak it so I can squeeze the most power out of it. I think it sounds pretty promising, and after hearing about 3zero3 taking tuning advice from they-who-must-not-be-named, my bias might lead me to swap over the Apikol, a shop in boulder. convenience is greatly increased as the shop is much closer to my house than 3zero3, which is about an hour away... so that's helping too.
Thanks for all the support guys!! Seal66, saskwatch, i will definitely be hitting you up for help, once all the parts get here I will try to schedule a time/place to do it, mec&saskwatch offered his place up as well which was super nice of them... i'm getting super excited and can't wait to hear back from RAI about my stupid questions lol. and maybe squeeze some discount out of them (i am brown, after all...). If i don't get an email back tomorrow, I may have to just call n bug em!
also, does anyone know if there any other members on here running the GTX series turbo? i'm sure their input would be helpful... i didn't see any in the b7 build thread
I love that there are so many people from the B7 forum that are going Stage III, finally, but how long before people start going custom twin turbo?
Maybe this is just me day dreaming during class. I was thinking a set-up similar to the ones that BMW had in the late model 335i's. Have a small turbo to kick in during the lower RPM's and then a much bigger turbo that is helped to be spooled by the smaller turbo and fed in the higher RPM's. BMW doesn't run this set-up anymore and they really had some problems with their HPFP.
I literally CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS!!!! I have been talking to ray and the RAI crew... I am having a hard time not ordering it right away but I need to finalize some more details before I get this show on the road!
have u ridden in the single turbo 335s? i've ridden in modded both cars, not even comparable!!! chipped, the single turbo gives you a damn neckache haha... linear power delivery is for people who want to be super fast. i want to have the fun of a little turbo lag... the GTX kits spool pretty darn quick and a 1.8T made 350whp with the kit, almost bone stock. they said with internals, water meth, etc. they can push it to 440whp for the 63R and 460whp for the 67R. I think i'm gonna go with the 63R just to reduce what i'm sure is already pretty intense turbo lag since i'm used to to the k03. gonna keep hammering out the details with RAI and eventually call Apikol and talk to them...
shitting my pants excited right now!
also i need a new bumper height adjustment bracket, PO didn't include the passenger side lol (sad face). just putting it here so I don't forget. i'll also post a list of everything i've done to my car up to this point, just so I have a record of it somewhere

I have not had a chance to ride in the new single turbo 335i's. I've driven and ridden in numerous twin turbo 335i's though.
Maybe single turbo is the way to go. I was just really bored in class yesterday.
sorry EMAXX I didn't mean to come off so aggressive. i merely meant single vs. biturbo is completely a personal preference and nothing more; just depends on what you want! biturbo might go around a track faster, seeing as you get a much wider range of power
i need to get my car dyno'd at stage 2 before doing this, as well as after (on the same dyno at least once), to record the exact gains.
also Ray has assured me the install is extremely straightforward and needs little to no instruction (they do come with some diagrams for assistance but no step by step i was hoping for haha), and if i had any questions i need only call. did i mention they were emailing me at 8 pm the other day... damn...

I didn't take any offense. No worries. I just don't really know that much about turbos and seeing that companies had tried it in the past, thought it could be a plausible option. I also like to be a little different from the rest of the crowd. (Like my green wheels, that just about everyone hates, but I love).
Also, I would also be more than down to help you with the install. I don't have any tools in Denver that I can contribute, but I'm pretty good with cars. (I realized that I never said I was in).
still not sold on the PRV... i think i might wait on it haha... LPFP/PRV/Internals will be for if I ever want to get crazy with the car, i think i'm not going to be able to safely put down enough power to take advantage of maxing out the upgraded PRV as of now. wanna keep the cost as low as possible for now, as i want to have room in my budget for error (at the same time, i guess $150 isn't gonna make a huge difference at this point)
gonna get the FMIC at the same time as the gtx28 kit, as i am planning getting the RAI FMIC, and since it's fabbed in house (i guess?) they have more room to give me discounts if i get both... so i'm probably just going to order it all at once
we can still go stage 2+ and FMIC and then go for the BT setup, gotta play it by ear at this point, i guess!
I am home late this week, and well have all my parts for the suspension/control arms, hopefully the hpfp from john well be there with my prv, and maybe my adam rotors lol. I doubt it on the rotors but maybe.
FINALLY. AN UPDATE!! I'M SO FUCKING EXCITED RIGHT NOW!
okay so after talking to ray for like an hour (so dope of him lol), a couple things have changed and I am beyond stoked about this kit and i have to tell someone and my roommates are sick of hearing about it lol!!
the GTX3071R on their 1.8 pushes 44psi lmao ... 419 whp! numbers honestly don't really matter to me... but still that is intense lol! he basically said these turbos need a lot of boost to get to a comfortable airflow so rods are like a must, to have any fun with it...
he also pretty much sold me on a meth kit, but I think I might have to wait a little on that as i'm pretty much going to be at 0 $wise... thank god i have a job speaking of which got a paycheck today that was awesome... rods, piston rings, MBC, all added to the list lol
working up an estimate today and i'm gonna call them back tonight and place the order so they can start fabbing stuff up. apparently they're super backed up so this might not even come for a while, unfortunately... which sucks. but it'll give me time to save up for the rods install, meth kit, and get the balls to put some of this sheet on!
I get to drive this (for all the advice I gave via text) haha , while I'm in Boulder building my next project
Yes, if you can order the HPFP & FMIC now seperate from the kit, get those things coming now. If you have a bored weekend, go ahead and install those ahead of time. Maybe go 2+ for free while waiting on the kit to arrive?
-also, you are safe to drive the car after install to go get tuned, but as hard as it will be, do not boost it!! drive it softly to 3,000 RPMS over to the shop.
basically, i could wait on doing rods, and stick to under 20psi... or i could just wait until i'm ready to do it right and go for the full thing... i figure might as well just wait another month, pick up a few more things (rods, mbc, meth) and just go easy on the clutch until i'm ready to pay for that haha
edit for andrew lol - tuning is not gonna be an issue, ray is gonna supply a base map we can load so that the car will run on a very conservative tune (<10psi i think) so i can drive it to a shop to get the internals installed. then he will be tuning the car remotely (and teaching me, which is sick, how to tune it using Maestro). the MBC is needed b/c maestro doesn't even have the ability to request enough boost (up to 44psi). i'm researching the MBC he is playing with right now, it looks like its definitely the right call, sounds like its gonna cost a boatload though lol.
here's the link. pretty cool, it controls meth, boost, and fueling... has fail-safes so that if anything goes wrong it cuts the boost automatically and runs a low boost tune http://www.eurodyne.ca/blog/index.ph...-online-store/
also ray has HPFPs & PRVs in stock... basically he is writing me up an estimate for everything and we're gonna go from there, looks like i am gonna order it all from RAI. i'll talk to him about mailing the PRV/HPFP/FMIC earlier
oh ya also quite a lot of deliberation, i decided on the GTX2867R with a .63 A/R.
customer service has been AMAZING thus far... especially with how busy ray has been with the 1.8 and the GTX. as excited as i was to hand over my CC info, he is adamant about talking about every point, which i fucking LOVE because i'm learning a ton, and really am going to get what i want...
nice!!! congratulations! next weekend... that's dope lol!
i'm starting to think its going to be 2-3 months before i get this kit on... a slightly depressing realization haha. but its totally worth the wait . just need to manage my expectations on the delivery date of the parts, and save some extra $$ haha. someone buy my wheels
