Do 2.7tt's eat oil? Mine seems to go through a quart in 2-3k miles. Is that normal? My Bimmers went through a little between oil changes, but not like this. What can I expect?

I actually do not get any oil on the ground. no leaks that I have noticed

My first thought is check your coolant a full quart is alot for your engine to "misplace" over 3k miles. And with no leaks it's got to be pooling somewhere. Any smoke out the exhaust?
No smoke, Coolant is full and properly colored. I'll see about getting it on a lift. looking back its more 3k or so, but better safe than sorry

Have you checked all your return lines? I know the return lines on the turbos are prone to leak. You can take a large white tarp/sheet park on top of it and let the car run for about 15 minutes or park it on it overnight and see if anything drips on the surface. That will give you a general idea of where you might have a leak.
i have a 2.8 and im loosing about a quart every 700-1000 miles. sometimes less.
audi/vw says its normal if it wastes up to a qt every 1000. so your fine. i wish mine lasted 2k before burning oil.
dont worry your not leaking or having major issues. i have a non turbo and burn more oil than you.

dont know if you were asking me or OP but i use mobile-1 10W30.
both lol. but a quart every 700 miles seems to be quite high. i also have a 2.8 and it burns about a quart every 3.5k.
i see you have 2 2.8s. Do both burn a quart every 1000 miles?

yes. my a6 and my passat have the same exact engine. and they both burn about the same ammount of oil.
and check this out....
passat = 110k miles
a6 = 57k miles
and they both burn about a quart every 1000 miles.
i always thought of it as an issue because of people not burnin off that much untill double/tripple the miles as me.
but according to VWoA its normal. and alot of users on the vortex told me they have the same issue. but most of them have turbo's and use thinner oil.

mine did burn a quart every 3k miles when i was using 5w-30... switched to 5w-40 and it helped a bit. 2.8.
i used 5w30 mobile 1 up until about 45k miles. then i switched to 10w30. it seemed a little better. but i have a buddy that uses 10w40 high mileage synthetic and says it hardly burns any at all.

My 4.2L consumes about 1L per 6000km which is very low, all VAG engines normally consume oil at a faster rate than many other manufacturers. The recommended oil weight for all C5 engines is 5W40 but as long as you're using an oil on the approved list from VAG you should be ok, personally I use I use LubroMoly 5W40 Full Synthetic.

Why the switch from 5W30 to 10W30? Given your climate in California those oils are effectively the same. Your operating temps (the '30') portion of the oil weight would have more effect on oil consumption than the cold start ('5W' or "10W') portion. Refer to the below diagram; especially in the summer time you're running an oil that's out of it's correct temp range. 5W30 or 10W30 are considered winter oils for low temperature driving in Canada and are really only good up to about 60F. Once the weather climbs above 60F you should be using a 40 or 50 weight oil.

hmmm, had mine for 2 years, its got 240k on it and doesnt use a drop.

would you recommend 5w40 or 10w40? next oil change ill get a w40 oil.
ive been using 10w30 because thats what i read was appropriate for my cars. and my buddy with a bmw 330 also uses the same oil.
summer is coming up. and thanks to global warming its been summer weather this whole month.
so im guessing in summer its gonna be in the 100's and ima need a better oil

if your looking to abide by audi's approved oil then go with 5w-40. *ALMOST* all 5w40 are audi approved. they are not cheap and you cannot find them in the big 5 quart bottle.
if you dont care about audis list then 10-40 is OK. but if you want to use 5w-40 shell rotella is good. lots of users on this forums and subaru guys use it as well. this one is 20 bucks for 5 quarts at Wally World. it is diesel oil so it has more detergents than our oils.
i use m1 0w-40 all year. and i live in texas. considering switching to valvoline 5w-40 for the summers but for now i got 0w-40 quarts stocked up for a good year. lol

For your climate I'd say either would be fine. The 5W or 10W refers to cold viscousity ratings. I use a 5W because I do go into into the interior of BC in the winter for skiing so overnight temps of -20C aren't that uncommon. My normal temp ranges are basically the same as Seattle's. Obviously being in Cali yours are warmer again and I can't imagine you get many nights in the winter where you go below freezing. The operating temp range is far more important in your case and 40 will more than do the job there.

thanks guys! ill be pouring w40 from now on.
we have only had 2 days this year where it got in the upper 20's (Fahrenheit)
but lately its been summer weather in the upper 60's lower 70's.

How many miles do you have on the car? Camshaft tensioner seals w/ VCG and rear camshaft caps on the cylinder head are prone to leak, you usually have a complaint of oil burning smell along with oil consumption/leak.
Where are you located in NC?

I have 159k. I was smelling oil after I accidentally dumped it on the side of the motor when topping off the oil. I cleaned my engine Sunday evening. Havent smelled it since. I'm really trying to learn this car. but it has some unique quirks. I love driving it though. Its off topic, but do you mind posting a couple pic of your Avant?

For your sake I was hoping that you were closer to me (Greenville), I would have taken a look at your car for you, wah wah wahhh. I'll have to try and get some pics together of my car, don't have any!
very hard to believe that it doesnt use a drop.
you must have a secret prototype c5 ;)
believe what you want, oil level doesnt move. i lose a tiny amount from the turbos in the charge air side, but not enough to effect oil level. oil changes are done roughly around 6k.
