Hi, I dont post here often, but when I do its because I like you guys.

now serious point, my car just hit 120k miles with the stock clutch, wondering if its known on the 1.8 engine to fail at that (young) age? I had my bar since 80k, it doesnt slip and shifts well, but I get this feeling like it doesnt hold well from 1st all the way to 3rd...

    any thoughts?

I've also got 120k on mine. It engages REALLY high but it's always been like that, so I guess it's just the nature of the clutch. Just don't launch all over town and it should last a good while.

My brother bought his a4 1.8TQ at 120k miles with a completely broken clutch (pressure plate snapped, disc completely worn and mangled, flywheel *roasted*, what-have-you). But the previous (first) owner was a 20 yr old girl, so that says a lot. It all depends on how it's been treated. Getting to 200k is certainly possible, but is probably the exception - especially on the turbo cars which might see more "spirited" driving styles.

I replaced my OEM clutch preventatively around 140k, and 100k+ of those miles were with a K04. Had no issues, and probably would have lasted quite a bit longer based on how the clutch/flywheel looked upon removal

A failing clutch is going to start slipping in the much higher gears before it will in the lower gears because there is way less load in the lower gears. As for how long the stock clutch will last, that all depends on how you drive it.

It all depends on your driving habbits (and that of any previous owner/owners). As long as you don't feel any slipping of the gears while driving (watching RPMs go up, but no acceleration), it can last for a long time.

I only upgraded my OEM clutch at 40k miles only because I had a unique opportunity to have my car be a test car for ECS Tuning to make the RA4 kits available. I have the RA4 Stage 2 clutch kit which includes an OEM B5 RS4 clutch and pressure plate and a lightweight aluminum flywheel. It's been holding up for over 160k miles with no issues.
