    NJ emissions for modded cars

It's been years since I had a car inspected in NJ. Do they still do an actual emissions test (pipe in exhaust to measure actual emissions) or do they just plug into the OBDII and make sure that no codes are set? Thinking of picking up a highly modded ride and I doubt it will pass a smog test with performance cams and the associated loping idle. :)

I had my 2006 A3 inspected after I installed new exhaust and intake. They only inspect for emissions now, nothing else.
They put the pipe in the exhaust and checked the gas cap. That's all I could see from the waiting area, couldn't see if they went to the OBDII.
However the below excerpt from the NJ DMV web site leads me to believe they hook up to OBD. At the top they refer to BMW & series ODB.

Mine passed, good luck with yours and I hope this helps.

"Note: BMW Series 7 owners must provide accessibility to the vehicle’s On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) computer by removing the cover plate prior to inspection. BMW dealers can complete this task. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

    The inspection process
Make sure you have all necessary documentation - driver license, registration, proof of insurance - with you. Photocopy, fax, e-mail or online registration receipts are unacceptable.

Vehicles may be inspected up to two months in advance of the due date
Check your windshield sticker for inspection due date. Registrations and inspections do not necessarily match
The inspector will determine your car's engine type and prep it for testing
The inspector will perform the appropriate emissions test based on the year, make and model of the vehicle
The final stage of the test will assure that your gas cap is stable and limits the escape of fumes into the environment
Upon completion, the inspector will place a new two-year sticker in your windshield

I am also wondering this. I'm registered in PA but will be switching my car over to jersey. I have piggies at the moment with no CEL but want to go fully cat less but don't know what jersey checks for. Any experiences?

    Thanks

My car was just OBDII'ed. IIRC a CEL is an instant fail, as is "not ready", but I didn't see any physical "insertion" when I was there
