    stock HID setup melting headlight??

I recently purchased an 01 s4 with 79k completely stock. After about two weeks my drivers side headlight began becomeing tempermental so I bought two 4200k replacement bulbs from ecs tuneing. After a week of working flawlessly they begin flickering randomly and the drivers side begins to fail once again. I decided to take out the bulb after I start smelling somethihg burning and come to find out the plastic base of the bulb actually melted in one place. I put one of the old headlights back in and it has been working correctly for a few hours now. I'm just looking for some feedback on what is wrong my only two guesses are the bulb was defective or to much voltage going to the bulb possibly?

Make sure all of the connections are clean. Could be a ballast too. I have one oem laying around I'd let go. Pm if interested.

Is there a testing procedure for the ballast? I have not really looked into it to much yet but is the ballast the silver box directly under the headlight? Also the bulb melted where the wire goes from the top of the glass right to the plastic

Try swapping the opposite ballast and seeing if it does the same thing. And correct, the silver thing on the bottom. 6 or 8 bits holding it in I think.
