I only have roof racks because i actually use them. And gas mileage really isn't something to worry about when using them.

All the ricers up here in ct seem to have them, not a huge fan...but I do have cross bars and a ski box for my daily passat wagon for when I go camping etc.

It could be worse, all you see around Seattle are fixies... In hilliest city next to San Francisco, they make absolutely no sense. Damn hipsters...

Of course I own a road bike (Litespeed Tuscany Titanium frame) and an ancient Specialized Rockhopper (solid front fork and hardtail ftw!). I find it hard enough to get up the hills around here without dropping into the granny gear. Not sure what the fixie crowd is thinking.

Ive tried riding road with a buddies bike.......after a couple miles I was debating throwing myself in front of a car...........so boring. Maybe I have ADD, but I love the smell of the forest, the constant change in scenery and the technical. Love MTB

Hmmmm...Pack your bike...book a transatlantic flight and go ride in Southern France and Italy or if you need even more challenge than the Maritime Alps, head further north towards the Alps or the Dolomites in Italy or west towards the Pyrene's.

I'm always entertained by the number of people who really have not ridden on the road other than bike paths and flat roads...
riding up thru switchback up a col to 900 meters is almost as much fun as descending.....Do It...Compare It..... then you can say...Nehhh...Not For Me....
If you don't think descending @ 50-65 mph thru switchback roads isn't technical then OK.....

Bro, Im in the Army.......If I go to Europe its because I was stationed there. You should try baha'ing in the desert with a group of pro's loaded to the hilt with ammo, grenades, AT4's, machine guns and rifles.....first you could start in the crumbling city of Fullujah. Then once you have conquered the tiny alley roads, and hairpin turns of the canals you could move westward to the not so lovely city of Ramadi and then to the "prestine" Lake Tar Tar......ohhh, yuppy yuppy there is nothing like going 50 in the open desert will the .50cal is rocking.....and oh the night life.....I mean curfew....its so amazing, and the women did I mention them....so clean and hidden for your imagination............hahahaha wtf you should bring your nose from pointing skyward to reality.......hahahaa
