I'm in the market for new tires for my car. I would like to purchase an all-season tire since I live in Philadelphia where the weather is unpredictable.
I was looking at the Continental Extreme Contact DWS but they are out of stock. They have a few places where they do have them but they are marking up the cost of each tire by $50. And with road hazard and install its coming out to $900+
DiscountTireDirect.com recommended that I get the Nitto Motivo tires. But I havent heard of them. Any thoughts? They said that I could get them for 680 with warranty. Supposedly its better than Conti's DWS tires....
Current tires that I have on the car are Nexen CP-662 225/45/18.
I have the extreme contact and they arent bad actually. Its taken about 1000 miles for them to finally break in but now they hold pretty well. They are on the soft side but very good in the 1 inch of snow yearlier this year (only snow this year)
I wanted dws as well, but there was only one available. I went with General As03, very close to the tread wear rating of the dws, and they have performed extremely well. Still close to $900 with warranty installed, but that was with a special order 19" size. If you have 17" or 18", they will be cheaper.
I had the Conti DWS's on my B6QAvant.....
As others have said it's an all season and does not perform highly in all disciplines (LOL)
Additionally I found them to be very short lived but that is also because of Quattro and the region i live in which is mostly convexed backroads....
Also I don't run all seasons as when it snows 2"+ they do not have enough bite, not so much for getting going but most importantly stopping distance...
I run Michelin Alpin PA3 winters (235-45-R-17) on 17x7.5 USP's...They are done this winter but gave me 40,000+ miles....
For summer I'll be on 18x9's shod with Conti-Pro Contacts.....
I advocate running a set of dedicated winter wheels/tires and a set of Spring/summer/Fall dedicated wheels and tires..
It's about $1,200-1,800 per set but winter set should last you at least 3 years, Summer 2 to 3 depending on your driving.
In the long run that is less expensive then buying new all seasons every year, plus your optimised shoe-wise for the seasons....
I understand that it's expensive but since the contact patch is the only thing keeping us on the road, buying the best tires for your situation is critical....

I just recently put on the Nitto NT850 All-Seasons 235/45/17 and I really like them... No road noise and they are not super hard or soft, perfectly in-between.. We haven't had much snow in Ohio so I can't vouch for them in the snow, but in the rain they are great..

Weird, people are usually singing the praises of the DWSs. I am very happy with mine on my B7, and was considering getting a set for my B6 also. I would stay away from Nitto, they tend to be noisy from my experiences.
Have you looked on Tirerack? I like reading the reviews and selecting Audis under the vehicle type so get reviews for AWD cars.
As many have said All Seasons are the jack of all trades, master of none. I agree with this, however I don't have a second set of rims to run a dedicated winter/Summer setup at the moment so All-Seasons are my best option. My B6 currently has YokohamaYK520 which I wouldn't really recommend, but mine are toast: mismatched (4 year spread between the date of manufacture for each tire) and unevenly worn from the PO having his alignment out of whack for a long time.
For all seasons I don't think you can go wrong with the DWSs. Not sure where all the Conti hate is coming from here, usually people love them on AZ. Summers I would get Hankook V12 Evos.

I had conti sport contact 2s before, and they were great, but almost too much traction in summer. There is something to be said for a little tire slip, imo, that helps handling feel a little more natural. Too much traction, and not enough power equals engine bog. I prefer a little less grip, a little slip, and the General tires I was running end of summer were perfect. Completely natural control while sliding a little around hard corners. I'm sure on the track, they would be a little too soft.
I have been using conti extreme contact DWS for 5+ years now and I LOVE THEM! Great in the snow as well as wet and dry! Cornering is great too.
I want to add: As everyone knows we actually had snow in Seattle this year. The DWSs were absolutely solid even when the snow turned to slick ice. I was extremely impressed with their winter capabiliteis. I've been up to the mountain in them a number of times and never felt like the car was losing traction of getting squirrelly.
Having said that, they are a bit soft in the handling department, but part of that is my B7 is a non sport and has 225/45 17s and thus the tall sidewall flexes a good deal in corners.

Glad to hear they're doing well, I'm waiting to install the aso3 on a set of 19's too
I have the DWS but only because they came on my car. That being said, they handle snow pretty well for an AS tire. (Didn't have too much trouble after being caught in a surprise snowstorm in WY after buying the car) But nowhere near as well as my winters. They are also soft as most people said, especially the sidewalls. Depending on the size, the load rating might be too low for our cars - mine are.
DWSs are some of the top rated all-seasons right now. People do think that the sidewall is soft on them, which is true, but for everyday driving I think they would be good for getting around town. If you can get them for a reasonable price I say go for it.

As others have mentioned, all-seasons are decent tires overall, but do not expect them to be high performance tires.
Check out the falken azenis pt722...love em thus far with over 6k miles put on em and a great warranty on them.

Or to have the right load rating in OEM sizes for a B7 (DWS specific)
Yea what is the OEM load rating for an A4? 95? I know the DWS are 91.
How much of a difference will a higher load rated tire make? I assume the main difference is sidewall stiffness right? Sort of like how much it will deform under load?

I wanted the DWS but they aren't load rated for the B7 Avant. I went with the Yokohama yk580 that is XL rated and as suggested to me by Discount Tire. Its a new tire but has been reviewed favorably and in the few weeks I've had its been great. Much quieter than the Pirelli P6 I had and they supposedly get even better after about 1k mile break-in. Grippy on the dry and have handled the wet and ice very well. Long term is unknown but so far so good and Discount Price matched down to the DWS. http://www.yokohamatire.com/tires/detail/yk580
I have the DWS and love them. I have the ones with a 94 load rating and run them with a little more pressure and they feel great. When i bought them i remember tire rack actually had 2 load ratings I chose the higher one.

I'm glad you brought this up. It is worth noting that while I disliked them, I had the lower load rating version (edit: on oem 17" wheels).

Does anyone have anything good/bad to say about the Sumitomo HTR A/S p01 tires? They are a best seller on tire rack and come in a bit cheaper than Pirelli's or Conti's.
DWS are a great all season. My advise is to place the order on TR and wait for them to become available...they're a good $125 tire, but for $175 there are better options
I run the Micheline Pilos A/S plus. It's rated as the highes performer with the wet/dry traction! Snow is not bad either with quattro i can go pretty much anywhere. It's stopping distance that's the issue! However im still very happy with these tires! Great amount of grip and very strong tires. Only thing id like more is a bit stiffer sidewalls. Unfortunately i had no alignment done when getting them so i have really bad positive camber ware, however the tire's are still holding up perfectly fine. Iv'e done 120 and its still stable! I'll most likely buy another set when these go..
I had those on my previous car (BMW 330ci). They were great all seasons... I'd buy them again. Long tread life as well. Like a lot of all seasons... they were a bit lacking in snow traction... but not bad.

How many miles did you get out of them? I've seen a lot of Kumho only last about 20k
I ran Kumho's on my jetta v and loved every minute of it. They must be popular because they used to be a cheap $99 kinda tire in 18s. Now they are more expensive. Had some on my b7 as well. Not I have some platinum LXs. They seem to be nice.
I had the Conti Sports and they were ok, not the best in the wet and they were noisy at highway speeds.
I just put on the Falken Ziex ZE-912 and they handle better, are not noisy or floaty and they were close to half the price of the Conti Sports.
