So last night I am minding my own business at dusk driving along.....and what do I come up besides? A sweet looking lock B7 S4 with a nice exhaust. So the light goes green, we turn left in traffic, he see's me and we give each other the thumbs up. Then we get to another light and I am in front, he is behind me. Well the light goes green and I floorboard it! He stayed behind me and we had a little fun, I ran up to about 68mpg (in a 45) and the backed off, he did as well. What was weird is as I shifted I was looking in the rear view and swear I saw a big huff of black smoke as I shifted. From 2nd to 3rd. I also noticed th S4 was having back a bit...maybe he got smoked out on the 1/2 shift and didn't like it?
I know some Japanese cars are notorious for this, while other cars are not. I also notice, even with normal driving I do get a slight sot build-up on my rear bumper. As I say I know some turbo cars do this, but I also know sometimes this kind of thing can quickly clog the cats. I have noticed that in all APR video's I have seen I never see the slights hint of black smoke during a shift. Thoughts? Would those who know say this is normal for an APR stage 2 93 Oct tune with my setup?
Do you have oil consumption issues?
Suggest you go in for oil consumption test.
It is common knowledge now that some of our cars came with bad piston rings from factory.
Get it done before you are out of warranty cuz the bill runs 5k+.

I noticed this on my avant too. I saw it when it was on the dyno and I ALWAYS have thick black powder in my exhaust. I did the first part of the oil consumption test and since it passed they never moved onto the piston rings.
What type of consumption do you have?
I have a 2011 loaner and it burned 0 in 600 miles of driving.
My car was doing 1 liter in 1500 miles.
So if you are burning anything at all near that, I'd push the issue with AOA.
BTW, this doesn't impact performance or the smoothness of the engine.
Other than the oil burning and dirty exhaust tips, your car will feel fine.

My oil consumption is good so far...it's only been 1k miles since they did the oil change after the first oil consumption test, but the MMI shows that the oil is still completely full. My exhaust tips and the inside of my exhaust where my cutout is get extremely black though. My B6 gets some soot on my tips after a while, but nothing near as bad as my B8.
I get black smoke between shifts at times, it's oil. I'm burning about a quart per 1,500mi so I'm taking the TSB info to them at the 35k in a couple months.
T.S.B. 101103 issued on Nov. 3, Audi said that 2009-11 A4, A5, A5 Cabriolet and Q5 models with a 2-liter turbocharged engine should get a new crankcase pressure-regulating valve.

Hopefully they give you new piston rings too because the crankcase pressure-regulating valve didn't help the black smoke and soot from my exhaust...seems like it solved my consumption issues so far, but we'll see what happens in the next few months.
During my 2nd oil consumption test they overfilled my oil.
Thus giving a false negative in oil consumption. (Didn't move in 500 miles)
I just kept driving it past the 600 miles and return to the dealer at 1k miles.
At that point it had reached the halfway mark on the MMI.

Black smoke is also caused from the cause running rich which is almost always the case with forced induction cars...you would rather have this then the car running lean which would burn up the pistons...if your not having major oil consumption issues then I would attribute the smoke to the car running rich especially when you are in full boost...
OK I thought I replied earlier. I have never had oil consumption issues. The oil level indicator never gets below half in between oil changes. I am very familiar with exhaust smoke colors and what they mean, and have always thought white was water, blue was oil, and black was a rich fuel mixture.
k9lovr's point is what I am concerned about. Running a little rich can protect turbo cars, and is needed. Running excessively rich though is not good. It will clog cats and cause other issues. k9, does your car huff black smoke on shifts when your on it...that you can see through the rear view? Check and let me know if you would.

Yup it sure does, which I am also running a EC HFC which also allows for more exhaust to get out that is usually caught in the regular cats. Also My buddy has an Evo X which puffs ALOT of black smoke when he gets on it. I am not concerned about the richness as I would rather have it then it running lean
I figured out what this was..and I am embarrassed to say. The other night I had similar conditions...it was dust.....near the dew point here in fl....so I jumped on in, and when it shifted...the rear windows went dark during the shift. So I turned around and tried it again, this time with the limited dusk sunlight on the window, shift and WHAMOO! The window fogged up during the 1/2 shift, and slightly on the 2/3....only thing I can think is that that air swirled and thanks to the humidity it steams my window slightly like someone breathed on it. I tried this 3-4 times, and it is as if someone breaths on it.
I cannot believe it. last time I did it, I had turned on the tea defogger....and only the area the defogger had no heated the window steamed up. Amazing and some what embarrassing.
