Unless you've done it professionally yourself, you opinion does not matter at all so I have no clue why you would even bother to comment on the subject...
Well since you broached that topic and have thrown the gauntlet down I guess I AM qualified to comment. I did do it professionally for several years. I did have crashes in the first years that left me seeing stars. After that I purchased helmets, many of them in fact. And each one I crashed I replaced. Do I know if I've done serious damage? Nope. Quite likely though. 20 years ago there wasn't the knowledge base there is now.
Helmets, even cheap ones provide some level of protection over the crazy toques kids wear. I would much rather adapt to riding with a helmet then adapt to life with severe neurological deficits. To each his own, but just sayin...

Why does every kid that gets a free pizza lunch from the local board shop think they've gone pro? You don't want to wear a helmet?--that's super. Good for you, champ. But don't go putting people down for riding with a helmet because it doesn't make sense to you. It just makes you look silly.

@Helmets, if you need to wear one in the park, I'd say you already shouldn't be in there...I boarded professionally for 2 years and never wore one. Now, hills on the french side won't even let me enter the park without one Helmets throw me off balance and are uncomfortable, I learned how to break a fall years ago and rely on that instead of a piece of plastic to save me.
Anyway, I don't do any crazy tabletops or the pipe anymore because I'm 21 now and that's just too old for that kind of stuff I take pride in something I normally laughed at other people for, just going down the hill normally and "turning" lol...
Claiming to have some sort of professional credentials while suggesting against helmets? Sounds like you've hit your head a few times already. Any REAL professional would be pushing their limits to progress and WILL eat it in the process.
I'm 100% confident in my riding ability. I had a blind collision with a skiier friend at WFO speed. I cracked my head hard enough that I almost went out. You can't prepare for the unexpected, no matter how good you think you are. Luckily I was wearing a 'piece of plastic' which absolutely saved me from a serious concussion.
Come and talk to my downhill mountain bike or motorcycle track day organizers and tell them that you don't need to wear a helmet because you know how to 'break a fall'.... You'll get laughed out of there before you knew what happened. You're on your own with your opinion.

I'll be there grabbing a helmet for sure. I don't ever want to go through this recovery process again. Completely changed my views in taking risks.
Agreed, minimize your risks. I had one bad fall on ice and didn't wear a helmet. After that, I never go without a helmet though never had a bad spill since then but you never know - make one small mistake or get hit by somebody else..... you hear all of these concussions and long term issues with these guys in hockey and football all the time. Not worth it if you can't play hard when your brain is messed up.

What I know is that when I was 21 I had a lot of opinions that I don't agree with now - at my ripe ole age of 39. And if I were standing in front of my 21 year old self I'd give myself a lecture or two about life.
Fully agreed (just turned 38).

Totally, one of the reasons I prefer visiting here as opposed to vwvortex is because the (average) level of intelligence here is significantly higher. My guess is that that's the result of the average age of members here being higher and thus more mature.

They had a lot of good stuff on sale, boots, boards, jackets, pants, and just about everything in between. The bulk of the store was around 40% - 50% off. The items that were discounted more were last year models in mostly odd sizes like XS or XXL, but you'd come across the odd M or L. For you Josh, all the helmets were 40% off with a good selection in sizes. But the place was rammed with people and the check-out line was long and everyone had their arms full of stuff. If you want a good selection you'd better go sooner than later. Good luck!
