Looking to take a peek at my carbon status, and pistons. Anybody wanna let me borrow one? If not, we can get one shipped off Harbor Freight for about $100. If a few of us can split cost, it would totally be worth it.

yo dawg...it'll be your boroscope we'll just keep it at my house!
Anyways, without a catchcan or w/m it's likely you'll have some build up. You should see the blow-by I empty out (in the cold months) on a regular basis...this is the stuff that otherwise just gets cooked onto the valves. I'm thinking on removing the manifold when I install the PRV and at that point scraping mine out. I imagine I have some build up even though I've had the catchcan and meth for awhile, it doesn't mean it wasn't building up before. Here's what comes out...I empty it every couple of weeks in the winter...
edit...I saw you had a catchcan after looking at you sig again.

Wow Brock, that's like Eeeeew! Mine doesn't look that gross. Mine is definately less muddy looking than that.
I know I have got to have carbon buildup (just passed up 116k miles). I don't feel any power loss, it's just more of a curiosity thing. A curiosity that isn't worth $100 bucks, but definately worth a 6-pack, or $25 even. I also plan on opening up the manifold probably early summer (when the motorcycle can be counted on) and cleaning them and adding the PRV also. Just want to see....
I'm curious too...I actually was asking around (awhile back) what a shop would charge and I think the avg was around 600.
It's probably a DIY but at the same time I'm certain it would require some serious elbow grease and probably some patience that I sometimes lack...

That's why I want to wait until I can ride the bike, so I can leave it sit for a couple days if I need to. Soak the shit out of the valves for a day, then scrub. Can't be that hard, though. No way I'm paying someone $600 just to watch carbon soak up chemicals. Not even 3zero3.
It would just be cool to be able to see it first. Just to compare carbon with mileage/driving style/car year/engine type.
true it would be cool to see.... Although it's going to involve soaking and then a lot of scraping. If I were to pay someone I would require before and after pics as well. Hell, when they finish up they should have to call and I come down and eat a meal off of he newly cleaned sections.

...you mean to tell me that shit is oil!?!!??! from a catch can that looks like that!
that shit is the blowback that is being deposited back on super hot valves and then caked and cooked on for good if you don't have a catchcan. Ask any guy with a fsi 4.2L out there about the power loss because of carbon buildup.

i want to check it out when u get one haha. on your car i mean. or maybe i'll just pitch on one
That's what I'm saying. I think the ability to view the inside of your engine is worth ~$25. I'm not going to pay a shop for an hour or more to do it, and I don't want to buy the thing for $100. But if four of us were interested enough, $25 a piece would totally be worth it IMO.

Martin, what's your paypal? I randomly just had $29.94 refunded to my account, not even sure why. I'll just forward that to you instead of hitting up the atm.
any pics of your intake valves since you guys bought the boroscope? I was thinking of buying that harbor freight one. do you snake it thru the throttle body or a spark plug?
I haven't taken any time to really get to know how to use it, I believe there is a picture mode though. I snaked it through the throttle body, but there is a splitter that makes it hard to get close to the valves.
