Just wondering if we've got any DJs on AZ. I'm kind of curious and want to start dabbling in it, any recommendations on some good free programs to start with?
Thanks

I have been Dj'in since i was 16...i must have a thousand records (yes vinyl sounds better) but 12 bucks a pop for one track and a remix on the reverse side kinda started getting ridiculous once the whole digital Dj stuff started. My setup is 2x 1200's...DJM-700...and i use VDJ when i have some MP3/AIFF i wanna spin. The DJM-700 is also a MIDI controller so thats what i use for VDJ...so its like i got 4 decks...which is HUGE when you wanna smash as many tracks as you can in your slot...and its just fun!
@Raiketsu.....Im sure you can "locate" a version on the intertubes to use. VDJ is great....Mixtrack is ok...but you can find some others.
Do u plan on sticking to digital only? Or grabbing some real turntables for Vinyl?

As of now just digital. I have zero experience and want to just try it out and see if I am any good at it, so I don't want to spend money on anything just yet. Any tips for a beginner? Like how to choose songs, etc?

I dont know how you expect to try it out without spending money. It's not like you can download a program to your laptop and mix tracks using your mouse or something. You need 2 decks, a mixer and software. you're looking at upwards of $1000 even if you buy used. This is the cost of trying it out.

#1 Choose tracks YOU like.
#2 Choose tracks YOU like.
#3 get a good set of headphone (cant go wrong with Pioneer)
What kind of music you plan on?
Pretty much electronic/dubstep, with some hip hop. I love artists like Pretty Lights, MiM0SA, Bassnectar, etc.

YES YOU CAN MIX WITH A COMPUTER.. You just need the right programs, and quick key setup's. ANY program you want I either have or can get. Here are some I use:
VirtualDJ
Reason
Sonar X1
FruityLoops
Logic
ProTools
Abelton Live
That's pretty more the order I use them (frequency wise). 1STB6 pretty much gave you the setup you need, are you doing this on a mac or pc?

Sorry. But there is a difference between DJing and mixing tracks using some program called FruityLoops sitting at your home PC. I consider myself a pretty avid fan of electronic music. I go to nemerious shows every year. Never in my life have I seen a DJ mixing with his computer. Yes they will almost always have a laptop with them. It supplies tracks to the decks via Serrato or some comparable system. I cant see a mouse providing enough control to mix anything properly in a live show.

@KFizz, Try out FruityLoops or Sonar and let me know if you still feel the same way. Setup your "HotKeys" and see how it's fairly easy to work with. Don't let the name fool you, General Mills doesn't make this program. Granted it would be easier for a beginner with decks, but some don't have the start-up cash to do this. I do find myself using my board (Mixtrack Pro) more that I've bought it, but before I got by ok with my computer, especially since I was a beginner. Now it's just a different level with the board. What kind of cans are you using?

I actually don't DJ personally. Or not very well anyhow. My roommate does. The setup is: 2 Pioneer CDJ-800 MK2, A pioneer mixer (I'm not sure of the exact model, 5 channel), and Serrato, 5 self amped Speakers (2 are Tapco, not sure of the others). Maybe I'm just too much of a purist when it comes to this stuff. I don't like Serrato and it bugs me that it's so widely used among professional DJ's. It's just become too easy to do now. I miss the days when there was actual finesse to DJing. It wasn't that long ago guys were still using vinyl, which is extremely hard. Now they're basically doing away with all the equipment, just plug your computer into an amp and hit play. What kind of show is that? It's like watching some Korean kid play World of Warcraft on a stage. Do I want to pay to see this?
But hey, despite how "easy" it's become, I'm still no good at it. Sais a lot about me I suppose. And I guess at the end of the day it's the music that counts anyway.

I've downloaded Virtual DJ, and now I am trying to build up a decent electronic library. I'm just not too sure where to start with VDJ. Thus far I have just been messing around with the settings, I'm a little lost as how to mix songs fluidly and repeatedly.

Right now I have 2 sl 1200s with a budding vinyl collection, a traktor s4, a numark ns7fx (that I'm looking to sell if anyone is interested.) And a gazilion midi triggers.
Ps you should buy my ns7fx, its a good beginner setup.
LOL ^^ Very Nice.
@kfizz- Your right it's very easy these days to do almost anything, and advancing technology has made it as such. However, if you look at artists such as "Girl Talk" and "Deadmau" they work their ass off when they do live shows, more so "Girl Talk", dude was sweatin bullets on a documentary I was watching, and he wasn't even scratching. Just back and forth on the boards and the computer has him exhausted, enough to make him nauseous. There's 13 year old kids runnin around mixing and making studio-like tracks with these programs. Just go on YouTube, and you can learn anything. And yes it has taken the "work" or "novelty" out of real dj'ing
@rai- Sync, Brake, and Loop are your best friends. It'll give you the time you need to mix tracks together and give you a window of mix error. Or, you can always YouTube it :)
