A lot of my driving skill has been gained by driving in India, especially in New Delhi.
Lanes mean nothing, and if you can fit your motorcycle/scooter/car in a spot in traffic then its yours. if someone is an inch in front of you on the road and they decide to crank the wheel into you, its your responsibility! Insurance is meaningless, and suing someone for money is impossible, as most people don't even carry driver's licenses. people (including me) drive on the wrong side of the road whenever its more convenient, and humvees with 6-8 policemen with AKs sitting in the back are everywhere and don't give a fuck.
did i mention no one really has side mirrors, because people drive so close to each other? cars literally stopped coming production with side mirrors lol. not all but a lot of them. if you're not within 6" of another vehicle on every side of you you are extremely lucky, lmao, this has only happened a couple times to me while driving in the city, and usually its at night (the roads still have traffic even at 3AM)! cows will just camp out in the middle of a road, and no1 will do anything about it!! (its against the culture to force them against their will).
JR reminded me about it in another thread, my mom actually refers to my driving in India as the style in which i drive in "that terrible video game where you shoot people" aka GTA, hahaha. if you don't drive like that, you won't move an inch.
oh ya and laws don't matter. if you ever get stopped by a cop, its not b/c you are doing something wrong. its because he thinks he has a good chance of getting a bribe (you look stupid, nice, or foreign). been pulled over before for not having license plates (pulled over meaning a cop stood in the road lol, since you don't really get pulled over in india). dude said i was speeding, i told him i wasn't. he said i didn't have plates, i told him they fell off. he asked for my license and i told him i didnt have one. then he asked me for money and i told him to fuck himself lmao. he told me to watch who i'm talking to (india is all about respecting anyone even one day older than you; they are always in the right and u are always in the wrong. even if you don't know them. needless to say people are shocked by my americanized attitude, where i stick up for myself and don't take disrespect from people) and let me go. probably seems out of this world to some of you, but i'm sure others of you will be able to tell some good stories of your own.
Has anyone seen Ice road truckers most dangerous roads?(dont know if thats the proper name) Op, your story reminds me of an episode were one of the truckers hit a car, a mob formed, and the driving was crazy. Lets just say, i would rather walk. Was it hard to get used to, complete chaos? What car did you drive when you were there?
Sounds a lot like Ecuador. I was stationed there for a while when I was in the military. Everyone there thinks thay are Nascar drivers. Speeding, wreckless driving, crossing lanes, swerving around holes into oncoming traffic, you name it they do it. And to top it off, cop cars are non-existent. I never saw a cop the entire time I was there. I'm sure it wasn't like this in the major cities like Quito and Guayaquil but I was in Manta, a smaller yet still sizable city.
Wow, dude, that shit is crazy. So you grew up there? It's hard to see you in that situation when you say shit like "legit". Lol! Craziest I have ever seen is the rich young dudes in like Saudi Arabia. Doing donuts through traffic, and sandal skating, and interpretive dance driving and shit. Never gotten to experience anything out side the US. Been to Mexico, and I would never drive there. Ever. Quickest way to be put in jail til you give them enough money.
I was just a kid when I lived in india... learned english in elementary school lol when i moved to DC. i spent like 2-3 months a year there when i was younger, and then like 1-2 months each year in high school... those Saudis are sooo nuts!! honda accords doing like 80mph haha ripping the e brake
That ice road truckers if you're referring to the one that is actually in india haha... ya that shit happens all the time. when a bigger vehicle hits a smaller vehicle, people form a mob and usually the operator of the bigger vehicle gets in trouble with em lol
i used to drive my grandparent's maruti 600, upgraded to a honda city (honda civics were like 36k USD back then, the city is a lower model haha) when my mom moved back, now she has a merc C class but I haven't been to india since 2008 when I started my undergrad... my mom is like super pissed though haha so i'm definitely going this year after i graduate
Indonesia, Ukraine, Germany, Thailand, Mongolia, Japan, China, Turkey.
They are pretty different then the states for sure. Glad i had friends let me drive in the countries i listed. Some crazier then others

Pat - I think David and I scared the only girl to venture here away. She's butt hurt!.........I wish I could say I made her that way....
I'd like to see you drive there lol, because I can't...
a) there are no speed limits, D.U.I is a ticket, and seatbelts are optionable
b) the roads are old, small, and shitty. this is a 2 lane road through the main city....imagine parking on this and having to start the car in 1st and go up
