rearview mirror replace

are there any issues i should know about before replacing my rearview mirror?
i'm using a bow clip on (just to see if it solves my issues) and it does.
i want a permanent mounted mirror - can i just replace the mirror itself, or do i have to replace the entire mount bracket?

I did this on my A3, got a mirror from an A4 with dimming and compass. on the wife's car I got an aftermarket one but to mount it I had to buy an adapter as Audi/vw uses a strange round mount where everyone else it seems use a wedge. a guy on ebay makes an adaptor that slips over the factory mount, worked great.

thanks vince. you have a product name or other id for the ebay adapter?

wish I did, searched and could not find it again. I do know it was made in the UK, basicaly a wedge made out of brass that wraps around the base in the glass to match the common us mount.

also, if your mirror has the rain sensor, you are out of luck, this only works on the base model without dimming or rain sensor.
