Hey guys, name is Dewayne, and like the title, I come from the B5 A4 Forums. Ive got a 98 A4 with the Frankenturbo upgrade, lowered, some VW wheels and some other little things. I just picked up an 03 Audi A6 Arctic White, Quattro, Tip Trans, 3.0L V6, with 121k on the clock. The previous owner hit a light pole with it, doing damage to the fender and tweaking the steering rack a bit. The car fender got replaced and painted, which honestly could have been better, but didnt bother with the steering rack, but it still drive pretty good. I plan to get that fixed, once I get the clutch and things done to the A4. My only plans for it so far is a nice drop, wheels and maybe exhaust, for the fact A6's dont seem as popular and the 3.0 seems like the bastard engine. Since everyone likes pics...

The A6 in all its stockness
I hope to gain just as much knowledge about the A6 here, as I have done for the A4.
On another note, yes the 3.0 is indeed the bastard engine for our model. Yet, its probably the most reliable and best fuel economy. There are many people here with the older 2.8 engine who happily modded the suspension and exhaust and are content with the power output.
Anyway, glad to have another Arctic on board. Looking forward to seeing some mods popping up.
Thanks. Your car was actually one of the first ones I really liked when I started looking into the A6's. I was originally looking for S4, but it just wasnt in the budget at the moment, and I got the A6 for a damn good deal. Hoping to have some new wheels on it this weekend, get it cleaned up and some better pics.
When I trimmed the reinforcement bar for the FMIC, it done away with a lot of the mounts for the bumper cover, and it was hold on with zip ties. The bumper got pulled off one night from getting hung while backing up, breaking all the zipties. Since the bumper is pretty much trashed anyways, I decided to drill and tap 4 holes through the bumper into the reinforcement bar, bolting it that way. The rest of the holes are from previous owners mounting license plate holders.
Finally got the last bolt for the steering rack out, but saving the ps lines for tomorrow. The last bolt was a pain in the ass. Could see it plain as day through the hole in the firewall for the steering shaft, but could get a socket on it. I had to use 2' of extensions and a flex joint, run up in between the trans and downpipe, and barely got it there, but its out.
And upon further inspection, the transmission mounts are broke as well, yay.
Initial cost is an entire car. Trans parts were 550.
besides my south bend clutch, i have less than that in my swap after selling the 2.7 and other stuff. and at the end of the day, you still have an automatic so you will be spending $550 every couple of years lol. not to mention, 99% of the people do not know how to rebuild auto trans. almost any home mechanic can bolt in a 6 speed. in fact depending on the wrecked cars status, you might even make money. im not here to argue tho, just stating facts its not 5x's as much

550 every couple years?? What? That makes absolutely no sense, these transmission aren't glass, there is one part that goes bad, and it is replaced with an upgraded piece.
Also i agree with buying full car, but again 99% of people can't have a car sitting around while they sell parts.

yeah everyone knows how reliable and stout the audi auto trans are lol its a shame how much they hurt the 4.2's performance. now for a 3.0, who gives a crap what trans it has. its not going to ever be anything more than a cruiser.

Oh my god. Just told you, one piece goes bad. It's replaced. Then the trans is fine. Yea it breaks, but so does every other freaking automatic transmission. Trans doesn't hurt 4.2 performance, 4.2 isn't that great of an engine anyways. 4.2 is a cruiser as much as a 3.0.
sorry thread jack/

What is this upgraded piece you speak of? Torque Converter?
Got the car all back together over the weekend, finished a few things up, and swapped to black mirror caps yesterday. Took it in this morning for an alignment, and got tires for my 17's and got them put on just a little bit ago. I like how it sits. I ended up going with 235/45/17 on 17x8.5 et25.

Hmmm, 160k miles on my original trans with no slipping/noises/weird smells. I know every car is different and I somehow have been blessed. And with a little research and some patience, anyone can rebuild an auto trans, really not that difficult once you do one. I think the rebuild was a smart idea, definitely saved some coin with his route.

To me your car is begging for clear corners, and black out the chrome under the headlights and the grille surround. Leave the rings the way they are, or use the clear plasti dip like patrick did with his mirrors and give the rings a satin look. Again, JMO. Keep up the work

I want to give the headlights a good wet sand and polish, to decide if I want to clear them or not. I had already planned on blacking out most of the chrome, except for the rings.
Finally washed the A6 for the first time, in no telling how long. I never realized how white it really was until I got it cleaned up. I really need to polish the headlights and go over it good with a clay bar. Here are some much needed, updated pics.
Nice. It's coming along. Rip off the clear plastic protectors on the rear quarter panels. They are really discolored. I did mine as soon as I got the car. Didn't bother replacing them.

Once it warms back up, I want to do that, and possibly debadge the trunk as well. The weather here has been crazy just the past couple of days. 60* and sunny, strings of storms and tornadoes on Friday, and I wake up just a bit ago, and there is freaking snow on the ground.
Stopped in at the Audi dealership yesterday to have a smoking problem checked out. The problem is I have transmission fluid dropping on the exhaust and causing the smoke. Where the car was previous wrecked, it actually broke the transmission mounts, which is turn cracked the transmission housing. Im busting ass to finish my A4, and then start to either look for another transmission or have this one welded up.
If I swap transmissions, from what year and models will work with the 3.0 engine?
