Possibly a repost, but Im on everyday and never knew they had gunmetal plastidip....he posted this in the b6 section, not sure why he didnt post it up here....
watching the videos made me want to go on a plasti dip rampage! lol
YES!!! i have been torn on painting/powder coating my wheels gunmetal, but havent because I dont know if I will fully dig the look(thus my photoshop request awhile back)...then being bored and roaming around the b6 side I stumble on this!!!! JACKPOT!!! Im ordering some tomorrow....
the metalizer is what is really cool!! i wonder how good it looks in real life; in the video it seems like it almost mimics a glossy powdercoat finish. not that i'd want gold... just want it to not look rubbery
he has a silver metalizer which might be cool for those who dont want blackout window trim!!!....If i have alot left over I am going to gunmetal/gloss my trim for the hell of it just to see if it looks stupid and if it does I will peel it off...
I didnt think his car came out very good, it looked way too uneven in spots..I didnt want to post anything because of the work he put in though LOL
I'm going to do my hole car as well as soon as it warms up a bit and I haven't desided on a color yet
You can buy plasti dip by the gallon for like 60 bucks. I'm going to use a HVLP gun( the same gun I use for car paint)
I'm hoping the spray gun will give it a more even look and a little faster than a rattle can
Dolphin Gray A4 Avant 6 Speed
Santorin B5 S4 Avant stage 3
I'm going to black my roof out with this stuff eventually and see how well it holds up. I have had it on my grille for at least 2-3 years with no real issues. Mirror caps and wheels too.
my dtm bumper was plastidipped initially. I have enough to do the whole car. but then my mom ruined my fender and i decided to just go with the factory paint for the whole thing. plastidip is pretty sweet stuff though.
I dont think I would do an entire car but it is perfect for wheels. Spray them gun metal for $17, run them like that till you get tired of it, then peel it off and change to whatever color you want next....
real paint = entire car
plasti dip = wheels/grille/trim
Real Paint FTW, plastidip loses its nice matte look over time and starts to look dry, old, and bad quality.
I'm pretty sure though, just a quick wash, and then a couple fresh coats over the old stuff will have it looking brand new. I'm not going to peel my grill when I redo it, I'm just going to over spray and see how it ends up.
i just think that if you can paint a car pro as hell with this it'll look good. the glossifier or whatever would finish off that car IMO and make the white reflective as the black is. not saying i'm gonna run out and do this to my whole car lol, but its a pretty cheap and legit alternative to having small pieces painted
but ya that dudes car doesn't look even ... at least he can just rip it all off right. lmao
another guy just did his 2010 black A4 white. He did it all with cans and just pressed on the top (instead of even buying a $5 handle...). It looks pretty blotchy

a real paint sprayer will have a lot wider spray, which i think is what's honestly needed. that and a very steady hand
I think no matter what type of sprayer you use though, you will have to dilute the paint with naphtha in order for it to flow properly through the nozzle. Imo, that makes it harder to get a consistent texture.

Agreed

JR
I have sprayed on bed liner and I have a different gun for it. I bet that would work pretty good. Might actually be a little too much volume.

It would be too much volume I bet. I sprayed a bedliner without the rubber in the paint and it came out very textured(which is what I wanted for a bedliner, but would look dumb on wheels)

on mine I can adjust it. I actually used my rhynoliner gun (did the bed) and used raptor liner mixed with black paint for the lower body panels and it came out pretty good, but you are right, still too textured.

That's funny, I also stumbled upon that yesterday myself. I went to his website and I think the gunmetal looks pretty sweet. I went to Menards and bought 4 cans of the black to do my wheels this weekend and see if I like how this paint is on my wheels. I can't wait to see some pics of the gunmetal on a car. When I saw this post http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...-Dipped-Wheels I decided to give it a try.
" Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy"
my order showed up today. I think I'll give it a shot this weekend when I have the daylight and time. I think I'm going to try to apply it while on the car. Wish me luck...
Funny you bump this. I literally just got done watching some vids of fonzie on dipyourcar.com. I go on vacation feb 9th so I won't be doing anything till then, but my plans are gunmetal my potato peelers, black trim, and black grille. I'm going to play around with the clear also on the window trim. If you watch one of his vids he puts clear dip over the chrome on his car and it gives a perfect brushed look and my oxidation on my trim is getting really annoying....
