Podi Electronic Stepper Motor Boost Gauge Install

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
In looking around there was not that many install guides, especially showing where to wire everything too. Here is the steeps I took to install my gauge. If it helps one person, that's enough for me.

NOTE - You need a Torx Size 8 Screw Driver to take off the steering wheel cover, I found mine at Sears and you can buy the individual one for less than 5 bucks.

I decided to paint my Podi and Bottom cover Black since I have a Beige interior. I was not sure if I would like it so I used the remainder of the can of Plasti-dip from Another project to see. These were freshly sprayed.

Start by taking the kick panel off, it will need to come off anyways and will give you more room to work. Remove the fuse cover and the following bolts with a 8mm ratchet wrench.

Use the T-8 Screw Driver to remove the bolts here on both sides -

There is an additional T-25 Bolt on the bottom that must be removed as well -

Once all that is out of the way, move to the engine bay -

I drilled a small hole through the fire wall and pulled the wiring for the Sender through -

Instead of running the wiring through the ECU box I used this grommet behind the fire wall next to the brake booster, I drilled a hole through the grommet so I could re-seal the opening -

I used 3M double sided tape too secure the Boost Gauge Sender Unit, I found a bolt in the engine bay to slip the opening over to help it stay in place better. You can decide where you would like to mount yours -

    My Location -

Next you want to install the Boost Tap. Remove the Factory Plug and install it here and run the vacuum line to your sender unit -

With that completed, I moved back into the wiring. On the left hand side of the steering wheel locate the thick black wire. This will be your 12V Ignition wire. I cut some of the rubber away to expose the wire. Wrapped the 12V Red Wire from the sender and then the 12V Red Wire from the Gauge. I soldered the connection to make sure it would stay in place and then wrapped in electrical tape. Use your multi-meter to Identify by turning the key from the off position to on, while on you will receive 12V.

For the CONSTANT 12V to the battery, I used this Red Wire. I repeated the same method as above and wrapped in electrical tape. Use your multi-meter to Identify. This will always have 12V regardless if the vehicle is running.

Once that is completed, wire the Orange Wire from the Boost Gauge to the White Wire on the pig tail of the Sender Unit Wiring, the Brown and the Green have NO function. They can either be cut, or you can do like I did and fold them back and wrap with electrical tape against the wiring harness.

Re-install in reverse order, but don't forget to test your gauge first! Enjoy you new set up!

Thank you for pointing that out! I totally forgot about it. I will add in my location for that. I used one of the bolts behind the fuse cover.

Glad I could help your install. I had to look at multiple threads to install mine. Figured I would take a little extra time and share it all in one place.

I'm going to add this for reference as well. I live at high elevation and my gauge needed to be calibrated.

When your car is off, but the gauge is on, the gauge should read zero. If not, then check out this link in order to adjust properly.

I am having a special set of boost senders being made for people that live in higher elevations. While the calibration shown in the link above will work, the range of adjustment may not be enough for everyone to zero the needle, these new pre calibrated senders will need much less adjustment to zero.

Thanks Winston, I am loving the Podi. Might considering upgrading to the dual housing in the summer so I can add a gauge for my Water Meth set up.

great info here! i am in the middle of my boost gauge install. I am curious what you guys used for the dimmer wire for when the lights are on (night time)? i wired up my friends in his B6 but i cant remember which wire it was because that was at least 2 years ago. Thanks!

i should note at my gauge is not from podi(had it already) so the wire colors on my gauge are different.

alright i got everything installed and it looks great, however i am having an issue with the illumination. after some research i found that with the b6 writeup, the grey/blue wire is tapped for illumination. I tapped that wire and when i first started the car and turned the lights on everything was fine and worked as it should. however, i then shut the lights off and tried to turn them back on, and the gauge would no longer light up. i tried a handful of times more and still nothing. i tried holding the connection tight with my fingers to see if it was a loose connection...still nothing. im stumped. i know the backlighting in the gauge works because it flashes when the gauge turns on. any help is appreciated!

What did you use as your constant power source? Fuse block? Headlight switch? Ignition?

Mine is wired to the headlight switch, and if I dim the interior lightning, there is not enough power for the gauge, and it goes off.

Also, anybody have the instructions handy for the remote? I can't find mine. I need to find out how to change the number at which the warning flashes.

i have everything wired/soldered exactly as this thread lays out except my "12v illumination" wire is wired to the grey/blue "dimmer" wire in the headlight switch as layed out on a4mods.

It's the little + & - buttons to the left of the steering wheel! You should be able to dim the gauge also with the remote.
