I need advice for replacing exhaust/mufflers.

I have a 2002 1.8t dual exhaust. Basically, the whole pipe is rusting out from the previous owner living in Illinois. I can tell it needs new couplers and a new flex pipe. The exhaust connects to the sides of the mufflers which could also be replaced. Some of the pipe can be reused. My question is, should I invest in a new or used exhaust pipe or just have the pieces that need to be fixed, fixed? What's the best cost/car efficient mufflers to buy? I'm trying to know what I'm getting into before I go to a muffler guy.

Why not purchase a full cat back system designed for your vehicle? Maybe throw a HFC or test pipe in it, while you are at it. If you have the extra funds enjoy your car, man. You can usually find used ones for decent prices. I have a B5, but have a $1500 exhaust system in it that I paid roughly $750 for. Used Resonated Milltek system ($500 shipped used and is $1200 brand new before shipping) with Labree HFC ($280 shipped brand new). One of my favorite upgrades.
I hate it when my car acts like a little bitch, treating me like the bitch

    Cool Replacing your exhaust

I have the 2003 TT and just put a Magnaflow cat back with resonator and it's great. Reasonably priced about $750 on line. An audi mechanic I know says it's the best sound of any he seen and I think he's very experienced with the 1.8 engine... good luck

obviously not 304 stainless, what you need if keeping your car a while, my 01 jetta with 199xxx miles system is still like new in penna, exhaust shop bent aluminized steel may last a while in florida unless close to shore and salty air, depends what you want and can spend, a turboback system can release some power but costs more, a quality system can be easily installed in your driveway should you choose, in pa exhaust shop aluminized steel prolly go 3 yrs, rust starts shortly after installation, magnaflow's cheaper 409 stainless surface rusts only, its what most OE systems are today
