I just read an article, with the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid EPA City estimates appearing fictitious. Granted that everyone driving condition is different, but no one has reached anything close to the reported figures, even on a closed course.
Now, I know we fellow S5 owners, did not buy an S5 because of its EPA rating. This is very true. However, I think its fraudulent to claim we'll get 14MPG in the City when its no where near that figure. Based on my Iphone App, I'm getting approximately 8.5-10mpg in the City. IMHO, I think this issue should be raised, and Audi should be held accountable (just like the Carbon build up).
I already submitted my complaint, and I think you guys should too if you are experiencing the same thing. The reason why the Hybrid issue was raised, was because of the number of complaints. Let our voice be heard. I only took 5 mins max to file a complaint (only because I listed all my gas logs).
Perhaps you should rely on actual hard data about your milage instead of an App. Fill her up, set trip to 0, and drive till you run out of gas.
I drive 50% City and 50 Highway. I also shift at 3000-3300 RPM. I also let the car go in neutral as i approach hills. I also live 1.5 miles away from work and im not in the long stop and go traffic commute. My commute is very short.
My "Combined" MPG are as follow on a fill up each and every time.
I would like to also add, my car has only 10600 miles and I never over fill my gas tank.
Also, my MPG Is measured by How Many Miles driven (Set to 0 after every fill up). I drive approximately 175-190 miles before the Light comes on.
The App calculates the MPG based on Odometer, and Gallons required for fill up. So if I drove 200 miles (from my last fill up at 10400), and it required 15 gallons...my app would give me an MPG of roughly 13.3
I would like to also add, I am throwing this out there for people who are EXPERIENCING the same ISSUE. I am not saying all cars are experiencing the same thing.

A couple of tips if you're looking to increase your fuel economy:
1- Shift at a lower RPM.
2- Cruise at no more than 1,500 RPM. If you're above that, then shift into the next higher gear.
3- Never put the car into neutral while driving. You may think you're saving gas, but you're more likely to be using more gas than if you just leave it in gear and coast. This is because the fuel pulse will often shut off completely when you're coasting in gear. If you put the trans in neutral, then you are forcing the engine to use fuel to keep it running at idle speed.
what exactly do you expect in return after this filed? even if enough people complain, what happens next? reimbursement for all gas you bought? buy-back vehicle? i just dont see what they would do in the end...
Point of note- your location is LA- no 93 octane, right? I am sure Audi notes some where that performance values are based off a minimum octane rating.
Not poking fun at you, just saying, if you're on 91 you will likely see lower numbers.
Why do you shift at 3k? It should have plenty of low end torque to get you around shifting at half of that. Thats a big reason right there along with the coasting in neutral.
Sounds like OP has a little too much time on their hands.
First we have people arguing that they would rather have an A5 over an S5 if they were the same price, and now someone wants to file a complaint about crappy gas mileage because they read an article on a hybrid forum? Jesus.
Can we get back to talking about modding cars and doing things that are fun instead of this crap?
Personally, I assume that with the purchase of any V8 powered vehicle comes a waiver on fuel economy. It's likely the sheet under the "Sign here for awesome V8 sound" form. You probably just missed it.

Here's a better suggestion: How about YOU read and respond to the threads that interest you instead of bitching about the threads that don't interest you? That way, the rest of us will be able to read and respond to the threads that interest us. Now isn't that easy and simple? Just because the OP has concerns about the fuel economy of his V8 doesn't mean it's not a valid subject to discuss. If you don't like it, stay out of the discussion instead of adding what amounts to a worthless post.
Hey guys, dont give Kevin such a hard time. He is a respectful member. Many are frustrated with the shit mpg compared to the return in regard to power. Im sure he figured others would jump in and support. Hell, you never know...something could come of it.

I can hardly care about Audi buying back the vehicle or reimbursing me for gas. It's not an expense issue for me.
The issue is, the EPA ratings are inaccurate. They're misinforming people and my point is, IF you are experiencing the same thing, you should say something about it. If you are not experiencing the same thing, good for you.
IMO, The sticker on the EPA for a 6 Speed Manual should be 10 City (With a range of 8-12), 22 MPG Highway
Might only sound like 4mpg, but thats a 29% decrease from the listed MPG.

problem is the numbers kev is quoting can vary greatly from one car to another and from one city/geographic area to another. i was pretty astonished at how bad bk's mpg was too, but he lives in the heart of bklyn where traffic sometimes moves at a crawl. on the occasions i drive the car in the boros, my mpg is in the general area of epa estimates. unless of course it's bumper to bumper midtown traffic, pkwy or expwy during rush hour, etc. i expect my mpg to be much lower during those times. at other times, driving upstate and to jersey or pa with no traffic, i have managed to get nearly 300 miles from a tank.

+1 I have no problem with the Highway estimates. I think its dead on, because I get between 20 and 24 (EPA 22).
However, even when I shift at lower RPM @ 2500 for example, I could never achieve anything close to the City EPA. I go to the Gym at night, where there is no traffic, and my car is telling me 9-10 MPG (which means, its probably worse in some sit and go situations).
I accepted the responsibility of owning a V8, but I'm just saying the EPA estimates have been wrong before about their ratings, why can't they be wrong again? http://editorial.autos.msn.com/artic...umentid=435700

I usually average around 300 miles to the tank. Then again, I don't live in LA. I'm about 50/50 city/highway. I usually average around 20/21 MPG's at the end of the day. Not bad IMO. Sounds like your car has a problem with gas consumption.

Exactly...I'm experiencing 8-10, I would be happy if I can get 11 lol.
Okay, but judging by your other posts in this thread, I'd say your driving habits are contributing to your poor fuel economy. Estimated fuel economy ranges are just that--estimated ranges. If you are trying to maximize your economy, you'll have to drive the car in a manner that will allow the absolute best fuel economy. Try reading some of the bigger hypermiling forums for some tips. I bet you could easily get to the estimated ranges posted on your sticker for both city and highway.

Thanks Beaker. I gotta look into that. I do turn my car off when I know im a long red light as well.

I'd avoid doing that. The extra wear and tear on your ignition system and starter will probably more than offset the pennies that you'd save in fuel. And I'm not sure if you realize this or not, but an idling engine uses very little fuel. And I mean VERY little fuel.
damn those slopes in the city! i wouldnt blame u if u got 8-9 mpg...i took my A5 to SF on a couple of weekends to show my cousins around and didnt even realize where all that fuel went

I was just kidding....reminded me of the story that our grandfather used to tell us---how he used to have to walk to school in the snow, uphill...both ways.
Anyway, no matter how much you have to drive uphill to get somewhere, you always drive an equal amount downhill to get back to where you started. So it kinda cancels itself out.
Damn... I already felt like a gas guzzler having the light come on between 230-250 miles, but 175-190 miles... makes me feel lucky. This was still after 50k miles and no carbon cleaning. Oh well, I'm changing to the V6S next year.
first off, when people do testing for EPA estimates, its in way diff driving conditions than what we face. their "city" driving does not consist of start and go traffic. their city is like a straightway in the suburbs driving like 20 mph but not needing to stop, go , stop go. they dont factor in real life conditions like traffic, red lights, etc.
like others have said, when u buy a v8, u shouldnt complain about gas. u gotta pay to play. dont worry kev, we were on the same boat. we both were waiting for an A5, but jumped on an S5 cause it was a better deal/tired of waiting, and we ( or maybe just me ) had a regret in it. i pussied out and got rid of it cause everyone on the forum was tired of hearing my complain about my 5mpg city but 32 mph highway.
IMO if gas mileage does really bother u, i would hurry up and swap out of ur s5.

Thats similar to what I average on a normal day and I got a ton of hills here. its around 9-12 if i only drive in the city.
