A few updates, if a MOD wants to move this to the BUILDS section thats fine by me...
I've been slowly working on the shell since purchase, basically ripped it totally apart interior/exterior/suspension to deep clean and re- assemble. It was sitting in a field for a good year before I purchased her, mice made friends in the glove box/etc...
-sold my black leather in favor of some Blue Alcantara
-Cf trim, DxC "Rs4" door pulls, and some elbow grease... (should I switch from Nog. pulls to some Onyx... hmmn)
-Fabricated a mount for my FMIC and chopped the crash beam a bit...
-Made a harness for the Avic, and modded the unit to get rid of the ugly silver knob... thanks plasti-dip! Just waiting on a Center vent, to install the unit... and interior will be almost 100%
Otherwise, I've just be steadily accumulating parts, wrenching and doing a lot of cleaning to the shell. I should be able to begin assembling my longblock within the next week or so; picking up a blown motor to scavenge bits from.
I'm a do it once and be DONE with it kind of guy, I'm excited to build this S4 ground up... big plans!

Nice project, but why no 3.0L? The longer time has gone by since my build, the more my opinions have changed, and the more I kick myself for not doing it. The off boost power difference and the torque is just so huge for only 0.2L increase.
Gross, corroded, dirty ST40 front calipers apart, ready to be refurbed
-will be gloss white w/ matte black STOPTECH decals... en'route!
AVIC fit into dash kit, better shot of the custom knob... makes it look much more modern/OEM+ in comparison IMHO
About to order some rear brakes, mine are fine but I want NEW w/ the NEW BBK going on... Unfortunately staying OEM for now, rear BBK next year maybe...
Indeed the M5 is gone... always wanted a noggy, and prefer AWD big power! It will be better, trust me!
No lotto, I wish... I work a ton, and selling off some parts has done most of the funding. I'd love to hit it big now... and finish this thing asap!

In my research, most everyones 3.0L seemed to instantly or eventually have issues burning oil. I felt the 2.8 was a safe, more-so proven choice I guess you could say. I honestly would be happy with the power from a stock 2.7 and ragged out 605's... the built motor is just a plus!

Totally, that had been my experience as well. I discovered that much of this was build error, and I couldn't in the end find any empirical evidence showing that longer stroke on its own would eat that much more oil over a 2.8L, since the bore is the same. The other reason is that a lot of these 3.0L motors are built for all out performance, where ring tolerances and such must be made a bit more forgiving in order to allow higher ultimate performance, but suffering under cold starts and non racing situations. We've done more then a few 3.0L builds here and while our GTi-RS eats some oil, that is intentional. The other motors are working great and not eating any more oil then a 2.7L or 2.8L would anyways (which is a good amount I will say.)
I was just curious, since I had the exact same sentiments, but over the last year have changed my opinion.

definitely my thoughts, I figured whomever was assembling them/what pistons&rings were used was the downfall to all the thirsty 3.0's. I'd prefer a 3.0 for sure, the tq gain is always a plus, but we'll see what the 2.8 does.
longer stroke has absolutely nothing to do with it. any high performance engine is going to consume oil due to loose ring gaps, p/w clearances and cyl pressures. its just the name of the game. but broken in improperly and not using the correct bore finish for your ring set will also effect it.
build looks great so far!
random question but did you used to have a turbo e36?

Looking good man... Can't wait to see it all done! What turbos are you going with, the VT kit?
similar to the Vt kit... lets hope it isnt a gt600 kit FAIL! I have some faith in it, it is revised, different compressor/exh wheels, diff housings... the vast GT600 kit was useless... hopefully it works!
My cellphone snaps suck, but been steadily making progress...
-SSAC TWIN 1 system fitted... loots/fits great! I'm going to be deleting the center muffler in favor of Dual 2.5" resonators running in-line and likely and X-Pipe for a little sound change... think exotic.
-Engine bay cleaned up, was absolutely filthy w/ grease/dirt/dead babies you name it... pics make it look better than it is, this things had the motor out probably 10-15 times in its life prior, haha. Luckily the motor takes up most of the bay and you'll never know once it's together!
-Both sides rear calipers out, I'm utilizing B7 S4 rotors and the 034 Motorsport brackets/lines for the brake upgrade... Found both sides are seized and my shitty 60 dollar Husky 3/8 air-impact wrench (rated at 200ftlbs, mind you) could not get the 2x 8mm allens out to take off the caliper bracket... fun fun, must find IR or SNAPON gun to borrow/purchase...
-Removed the P/O's viper alarm finally, this thing was tapped into EVERYTHING... took some time with heatshrink/soldering gun. Installed my boost gauge, loosely-fitted the Avic for testing purposes before I click her in!
-Finally got my blown longblock to start assembling my built motor with, my built motor is bare and I will be swapping over all the sensors/hoses/etc... you name it... this means some good engine pics coming soon...
Next week or so will be spent cleaning all the pieces pulled off the blown longblock and transferring them to the new one... as well as some completed interior shots I hope. It's getting there...
oh, hey my old noggy, whas going on? haha glad to see its getting hooked up.
FYI I had an Avic D3 in the car as well until someone stole it at daves shop...

Not much man, basically fixing the mess of a shell I purchased... ALL the aftermarket crossovers/wiring for the system was junk from sitting in a field for over a year, seized everything, broken everything, missing everything, mice everywhere, ehh... BUT ITS IN MY HANDS NOW, and I'm probably the most picky person you will meet on a ground-up build like such!
Spent a couple hrs before work this morning cleaning up the greasy bits to swap over to my built longblock... no pics, I'll spare you the boredom...
My clean and organized garage is now filled to the brim, as if it already wasnt tight in there!
Progress has been slow... so much grease/dirt/grime on my used parts to swap over... can't have the dirtyness mixing with the fresh and clean motor!
-timing covers on, crank pulley on, snub mount and front coolant hardpipe on, as well as more bits/pieces I wont bore you with... I know you all want to see turbo pics! coming soon
Parts have been stacking up, it's getting there for sure. Next up is cleaning all the nasty off my engine and charge harness and repairing/heatsleeving some key areas. Still torn between a TB upgrade (not OEM rs4, I'm not that baller) and coating/porting my intake manifold... hmnn
One of my buddies stopped by today with his nice SnapOn 1/2 drive impact and we easily zapped out the rear caliper carrier bolts and got to a couple smaller jobs as well. My 3/8" kobalt gun can walk off a cliff... haha
Carriers out, rotors off, calipers out for rebuild (both sides seized, arrrrghh) Waiting on my paycheck to purchase the 034 rear B6/B7 brackets/stainless lines and my drilled rotors to match the front Stoptech's. I'll do some cleaning/degreasing prior.
Purchased some very nice silicone multi-braided heater hose to loop my coolant feed lines. I'm running oil cooled ONLY turbos, no messy coolant lines to deal with. I figured looping these was the best solution, I looked into a silicone vacuum cap, but nothing looked like it could take the heat. other option would be welding the ports on the hardpipe shut (would look cleaner IMHO), but you never know if they will be utilized some other day in the future. Also deleting the AUX pump as well, got some nice silicone hose and some appropriate liner clamps for that as well. Looks and should perform great! Also attached my oil feed lines, so I don't misplace them, not in final configuration obviously...
simplicity my friend... not every turbocharger needs to be oil AND water cooled. Most turbos are solely Oil cooled. I've built nearly 30 boosted vehicles, I'm not worried in the least.
They are garrett/precision hybrids. strictly oil cooled center cartridge. I like less complications/lines running all over the place, the B5 S4 already has enough!
