Hello AZ! Advice appreciated.

Hey so I'm about to buy an Audi and I'm still not 100% sure the path I want to take. So far I'm pretty stuck on the idea of building a B5 S4 (disguised as an A4) sleeper. I may have a friend interested in buying an A4 at the same time so we could swap badging/trim. I want it to look unextraordinary to the average onlooker (and of course the police.) So that means stock rims, no tint, no ricey bs, etc.


Under the hood I'd like to aim for 500-600WHP eventually. I realize that's a long road and I need this to be a daily driver for a while, so I'll start looking for a 2nd engine as soon as I buy the car so I can build it out.


So I guess what I'm asking is does this build seem reasonable? Or should I go for a B6 S4 for the bigger displacement from the start? My budget for just the car at the moment is around 10k and I know a guy who will sell me a 2004 s4 for that. I've seen a few B5's for sale in the area that were already substantially modified for under 10k but I'm afraid to inherit someone else's project and the accompanying problems. Also I'm interested in learning this car inside and out so the process of doing the modifications myself has value to me. Would you agree finding a nice garaged commuter's car is worth the extra $ on the overall build vs something that's been raced a lot already?


Also, once I do reach that 500+ mark, how reliably can these cars run without problems? I'm looking to build something that can be a quiet and docile daily driver then a fire breathing beast by switching a fuel map and turning up the boost.

B5 S4 have several notorious issues...Also, 500-600whp? I doubt it, not atleast not cheap (10K+ motor then maybe)...
