Loud wooing sound
hi all, my 2007 a4 3.2L quattro has this loud wooing noise when running. It is especially loud at 40mph and with a clear periodic pattern. When the speed increases, the frequency of the wooing noise also increases. When it gets above 70mph, the frequency gets so high and mix up with other noise and becomes unnoticeable.
The dealer replaced the tires with some very cheap brand when I bought the car a year ago. So I was thinking of buying a new set of good tires until I recently saw another 2009 post in this forum with similar symptom mention something about wheel bearings. I am getting confused right now. Don't want to spend $700 something on the tires but with nothing improved.
Btw, another clue is the noise got smaller after I had the tires balanced in a shop but came back as loud as before after a couple months.
Any ideas?

Nope. I can do that. But how would know the bearings are good or not?

get the tire off the ground and grab the tire from 6 and 12 0'clock and try and rock the tire. you shouldn't feel any movement

I tried what you said but didn't feel any movement. Does it rule out the wheel bearings? Or there is other tricks I need try?

I have had this same noise for ages, exactly the same, worst at 40MPH than any other speed. I have had 3 different sets of tires, different wheels, had the wheel bearings checked, but the noise is still there. The crazy part is it has not gotten any worse in 50,000 miles of driving.

Are you running aftermarket pads? My stoptech pads are constantly rubbing against my adams rotors (or so my dealer says).
I'll try to get a sound clip to see if we have the same problem. Shits annoyingggggg

I hate having to use words to describe foreign noises...but would you say its more of a "wooing" sound or a "whirling" sound lol?

LOL. Definitely a wooing sound, kind of like this woo woo woo woo woo. I tried making a recording of it once, but other road/engine noise drowns it out. Met up with another member who took a ride with me and agreed that I was not hearing things, but still no closer to figuring it out. I keep debating replacing my wheel bearings, but since I am now at 107,000 miles and it started around 50,000 miles I feel like if it was wheel bearings it would have gotten considerably worse, instead its the same.

Yep, if its the same noise as I get, then new tires won't fix it. I have gone through 3 sets of tires, and 2 sets of wheels, same noise.

I guarantee you it's one or both front wheel bearings. The method to check them is rarely reliable unless they're really gone. Only way to really make sure is to take them out, and once you've done that you might as well replace them. ECS has a kit for the 2 fronts for $200 shipped.

No problem. Keep in mind that they have to be pressed in and out of the hub, so if you're doing them yourself make sure there's a machine shop nearby that can do that if you don't have a suitable press.
Here's the DIY:

ok so i got the car from a shop and this guy knew right away what was the problem in my case. it was the hub, might wanna check that out first. it was cheap too. he got me a genuine vw/audi hub for $108. now it rides like new.

Is the wheel bearing not pressed into the hub? I am about to replace both wheel bearings as the noise has really pissed me off. Can you post the part numbers of what was replaced?

It is strange how the hub is causing the noise and not the bearing. The hub doesn't have any moving parts. I bought two wheel bearings to try and solve the same issue but after reading your thread, I'm almost tempted to get new hubs just because I don't want to take it apart twice. THe diagram in your link isn't showing up but I see the hubs listed. 300+! Any chance in asking your mechanic what is damaged on the hub to cause this noise? Much appreciated.

That's what I can't figure out either, I don't want to buy hubs and it not fix the problem, and same with buying bearings. I found someone selling used hubs (assuming with the bearings pressed in) but I am thinking I would rather buy new. Fed up with the noise.

Wheel bearings are pressed into the hubs. I am sure what he meant by replacing the hubs was hubs AND bearings. This would mean that the bearings were the culprit, as I don't see how anything could be wrong with the hubs that would make this noise.

I figure the same way. If it were true, then it would be great to buy once, cry once, and be done with it. I will be changing out the wheel bearings after finals. Just trying to get more information because the diagram he posted were just the hubs without bearings. I have the bearings in my possession but would fork out the cash if the hubs needed to be replaced. I'm over thinking this. I have this feeling...
